I think all of you should listen to the song "undead outlaw" by Ghoultown I think it explains what happened to Stanton Cree. I'm not sure if it does though, because I haven't listened to it. that's just my speculation.
Theory: the townsfolk have been sacrifincing visitors and strangers every night in hopes of protecting themselves. Evidence: the townsfolk clearly know about Stanton Cree and the curse that follows him. They're scared when he walks in, the barkeep nods in confirmation when he explains the rules. They know about him. However, the narrator doesn't, meaning he isn't from that town, and nobody explained the risk to him when he sat down at the bar. Over 1000 people have died to this ghoul since he first rose, youd think someone would have said something. But they didn't, because if there's a stranger who doesn't know what's going on, the chances that one of the townsfolk are chosen is decreased. And the deaths would be more than easy to cover up considering the time period.
