Hi Donnie. I really enjoy watching the pedal evaluation videos you make. I particularly like the sound of MXR pedals. Recently, MXR has launched the Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive Pedal. Looking forward to you making a video about this pedal. Thank you very much!
Woah I have the Hagstrom Super Swede and love it, I’ve never seen this model you have, metropolis c, now I’ll be picking up the DSL and looking for that guitar! That’s sick as fuck!
The Metropolis series (-C with humbuckers, -S with single coils) was produced from 2013 to 2015 (or 16, not sure anymore). Smaller body, very lightweight with slightly "percussive" sounding pickups, love it. In my humble opinion, that was Hagstrom's take on the Les Paul Junior. The 15 watts DSL has been out of production for years but look for the DSL 20. The overdrive channel sounds much better, less aggressive, more balanced. Might even get one myself eventually! Cheers!
You failed to mention the adjustment feature is so you can match the phases in with the beats of the song. You've got to apply what you've learned and fit it in with the recording. You might find that you should have bought a 45 phase or the doubling phase pedal instead. You'll quickly realise YOU MUST BUY the whole series of pedals. You also MUST BUY multiple quantities of the whole series of phase shifting pedals. You must buy the whole set of spanners 🔧 and another set of screwdrivers 🪛 🙄 🤔 You can't just buy 1 screwdriver. So, STOP ✋️ what you're doing. Ask yourself are you REALLY committed to this brand OR are you just being a FOOL cause you've effectively just bought 1 screwdriver 🪛 out of a toolbox 🧰 of tools.
"You failed to mention the adjustment feature is so you can match the phases in with the beats of the song." Nope. This *might* be relevant in very specific cases but not for my use. "You might find that you should have bought a 45 phase or the doubling phase pedal instead." No, because I got the Phase 90 for free. "Ask yourself are you REALLY committed to this brand OR are you just being a FOOL cause you've effectively just bought 1 screwdriver 🪛 out of a toolbox 🧰 of tools." Why would a musician commit to a specific brand? Buy the gear you want regardless of the brand and that's it.
Thank goodness that someone has pointed 👉 out that MXR is OLD STUFF. These type of pedals CANNOT WORK plugged into loops. Electrically they were designed to go into the front of non master volume amplifiers. Most guitarists DON'T OWN old amplifiers and they SHOULD NEVER BUY mxr pedals. But most guitarists are raving lunatics and they think they're getting this old stuff to work in their PC 🙄 😒
Not all MXR pedals are old stuff. My Micro Chorus and Micro Flanger pedals work great in my amps' FX loops. But you are 100% right about the Phase 90 having been designed at a time when amps were mostly non-MV, and is a factor to consider whenever you're trying an older piece of gear. "Most guitarists DON'T OWN old amplifiers and they SHOULD NEVER BUY mxr pedals." I have multiple MXR pedals and they all work great. The Phase 90 is my only disappointment so far but I got it for free.
It takes 3 hours to warm up your Marshall amplifier. Then it will take you an hour to fine tune your amplifier's 3 EQ section. Then if you add an EQ pedal that increases your possibilities to 10,000, 100,000 or 1 million possibilities, this DOES GIVE YOU several HOURS of work tuning the equipment. So, when you turn on your guitar amplifier and EQ pedal it's going to take 4 - 6 hours 🤔😐before you can actually play your song 🎵 If you think you can just spend 5 minutes tuning your EQ pedal and your done, WELL, you're completely delusional. Adjusting EQ is several hours of work.
Well THAT is what typical users will do with this pedal. You probably don't realise that this pedal effects the amplifier EQ section. So you must also fine tune that EQ as well. Then you must include adjusting the amplifier volume setting. You can't just boost at the pedal stage and NOT turn down the volume power at the amplifier stage. You're only using 25% of what you get from EQ pedals. Hertz adjustment IS DIFFERENT TO just a mid adjustment. Hertz is referring to doing a lot of things. For example, every slider in a home stereo EQ section DOES influence the sound of the snare drum. If your stereo system has 10 band EQ sliders THAT'S 10 SLIDERS that's able to shape the sound of that 1 snare drum 🥁 in the mix. So when you apply EQ to your simple 3 tone adjustment section, you've multiplied your adjustment by thousands. So instead of having 100 different sounds to choose from with your 3 knob section, this section turns into a 100,000 sounds to choose from. You can't just move 1 slider on the EQ pedal and say your job is finished. No, you must go over to your amplifier and also adjust this 3 knob section AND the volume. You've added enormous power to your 3 knob section on your amplifier. That 0 - 10 now becomes 0 - 10,000. You can turn down the EQ pedal power but you're still going to change the 0 - 10 into 0 - 100 or 0 - 20.
Let's have a little bit of fun. "Well THAT is what typical users will do with this pedal." Anyone can use this pedal any way they want. Beginners, seasoned, veterans. Don't look down on musicians using gear differently than you do. "You probably don't realise that this pedal effects the amplifier EQ section." Why do you think I specified that my favorite way of using an EQ is in the FX loop? Ask questions before assuming. "You can't just boost at the pedal stage and NOT turn down the volume power at the amplifier stage." My amp has a master volume. You bet I can, and I do. "You're only using 25% of what you get from EQ pedals." By all means, make a video on how to 100% of an EQ pedal. Be sure to do that with an Empress ParaEQ. "Hertz adjustment IS DIFFERENT TO just a mid adjustment." Duh. "For example, every slider in a home stereo EQ section DOES influence the sound of the snare drum. If your stereo system has 10 band EQ sliders THAT'S 10 SLIDERS that's able to shape the sound of that 1 snare drum 🥁 in the mix." *gasp* No way! "So when you apply EQ to your simple 3 tone adjustment section, you've multiplied your adjustment by thousands." You're absolutely right about that. An EQ pedal is a very, very powerful tool, especially with an amp like mine in which the EQ controls don't do a lot. "You can't just move 1 slider on the EQ pedal and say your job is finished." Unless it's all you need in your playing/recording context. I found that I only needed to slightly move two sliders on the pedal to get a tone that fits with my mix. Cheers!
@@DonnieDistortion True, but I'm referring more to the sound of this particular distortion. It sounds very metal to me. I'm looking for a preamp with a rock distortion but not too close to metal. Thanks for replying. Greetings from Chile.
I mainly use the Vintage but also have the Ultimate laying around, mostly unused. The difference between them here is almost negligible but still prefer the Vintage overall. Thanks!
Nope, I actually shot the video in sequences with different tunings. From the lowest to highest - drop C for Blew, then D standard for Lithium, Come As You Are, etc., then drop Db, Eb, drop D and finish with E standard. Then I stitched all the bass D.I. tracks as one track and reamped that single track through my amp. I went through the same process for the guitar tracks. Lots of planning but it worked!
Awesome demo, Donnie 😎🤘🏻🎸 I’m a long time hartke player and this amp sounds phenomenal. The drive sounds radical. Great tone for rock and metal music. Also awesome Konami t-shirt. I’m a retro gamer myself and I’m a big fan of castlevania 😎🎮
Pick up the Nux plexi crunch, best distortion oedal for everything from blues to metal and for $50 been playing since '78 and best distortion pedal ive ever had on my board.
