Great video! I'm very familure with that area. I never fished it in a tube, although, I have fished it a lot in a kayak and boats. You never know what you might catch in San Diego Bay. I will tell you my go to rigs for this area. If you are fishing the flats in front of the NAWB in shallow water, I use the 2" Gulp Shrimp New Penny on a 1/4 oz red leadhead fished on a 6 lb spinning rig. Cast out, let it hit the bottom, and work it back slowly. You will know when you might get a bite. it won't be suttle though. Also a rig everyone should carry in the bay is a 3/4 oz Chartreuse willow blade Strike King spinning bait on a stout 7 ft 10-12 lb mono baitcasting setup. Forget a spinning rig, and a "buggywhip" rod with the spinnerbait! The reason you need the heavy rod and 10-12lb mono is the spotties hit that lure like a runaway freight train with the throttle stuck wide open! They are vicious! Also, try trolling the spinnerbait when you are going from one place to another. I have caught more fish than I can remember doing that. The only time you really need a spinning rod is if you are fishing 6lb test or lighter. A crankbait in that area can be effective. Different lipped bass plugs have worked for me Try trolling a jointed Rebel shallow diving blue & chrome Fastrac plug. If the spotties aren't home on the shallow flats, most likely they are out deep in the channel. There is a deep channel running parrallel to the Coronado Bridge from Glorietta bay out to the main channel. You can locate that with a depth finder. Try the spinnerbait or, my absolute favorite #1 favorite bait for the bay, a 4" Gulp New Penny Shrimp on a 1/2 oz red leadhead on a "STOUT" 7 ft graphite rod with 10-12 lb test mono. No buggywhips! A stiff firm heavy graphite 7ft rod is what you use. Drag it along the bottom. If you think you are hung up, you aren't. It's a bite! Swing for the fence! The same goes for the main channel. Same rig. Same technique. Just follow the tides. On an incoming tide, for example, position yourself in the channel. You will be drifting South. Cast out North with the 4" Gulp Shrimp with a 1/2 oz red leadhead and the heavy baitcasting 10-12 lb 7 ft graphite rig. Let out a ton of line. Put it in gear. Let it bounce along the bottom. When you think you are hung up, swing for the fence! You will be rewarded with some MASSIVE spotties, I promise you! Also, if Bonita are in the area, throw a blue and chrome 3/4 oz Rattletrap. Throw it out on that heavy rig. Let it sink to different depths, then steady wind it back to you. Try different speeds until you find one that works. I have also caught many log Barracuda under the Coronado Bridge in my kayak and in a boat slow trolling a jointed deep diving blue and silver Rebel Spoonbill lure on 10-12lb mono. In my Buddie's boat, in early January, we lost count of how many log barracuda we caught in a morning trolling blue and chrome jointed Rebel Spoonbill deep diving plugs on 10-12 lb test mono. We left hem biting! 25-30 fish conservative. Caught and released. Also in the main channel, on a 6lb spinning setup, rig up a dropshot setup with a #6-#8 hook 18" above a 1 oz torpedo sinker. Hook on a 2" Gulp New Penny Shrimp. Drift the deep 35ft channel with this setup. You will catch more fish than you can count. It is especially a lot of fun for the kids. Most of them get bored quick, because they don't catch anything. Not with this setup! They will catch fish after fish after fish! San Diego Bay is the best inshore fishery on the Westcoast. You truly never know what you might catch.
This time of year you should be able to rent something. Check online for availability and order before you come. They can sell out. I usually arrive by 3:30am and the gate opens at 4. The bass are biting all day usually with topwater in the morning and plastics/jigs after that. Good luck!
what beer do you recommend for people who dont like beer lol. Also i tried to send you a DM on Ig but it wont let me so i left a comment on your recent post. tight lines.
Sorry that didn’t work not sure why that is. As for a gateway beer I can usually find something that people will like. It just depends on flavor profiles you prefer. If you like something sweeter or more bitter or whatever. You’re welcome to email me at beefshaman@gmail.com. Cheers!
Hey thanks for watching! No i think that it was a halibut. I saw it for a moment and it didn’t look like a ray. It fought more like a halibut too, but I guess we will never know. I’ve only caught a couple rays on lures ever. I guess it’s a possibility.
Yes they are. Just have to make sure they are regulation size and I would only eat them from the parts of the bay closest to the ocean. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@chrisbrandtthebeefshaman9590 I been using braid with shock leader and its bit hard on Corvina when they jump up and do the crazy head shake to pop the hook out, with mono / floro line it has that stretch keeping the fish hooked like a shock absorber and helps the fish stay on better.
@@chrisbrandtthebeefshaman9590first view and he didn't even like the video! Rookie move.. You get the thumbs up before I even finish the video.. always great content!
Cool video. I am new to your channel very cool. I live in Yuma Az I was always interested in bay fishing in SD. I grew up fishing saltwater along the Texas coast, looks real similar, what are you fishing out of?
Hey thanks for checking out the video and the channel! I fish out of my float tube there. Lots of people fish from tubes, kayaks and along the shore. Get out there and get some! Cheers!
We need to rehabilitate lake Miramar. The problem is the apple snail infestation has killed off all vegetation and algae and probably filters all the nutritious plankton. I think if we introduce big red ear sunfish that have been fed these apple snails, it’ll help reduce the destructive nature of these released pets.
@@chrisbrandtthebeefshaman9590 Also, Is that bass you caught the biggest ever since at lake Miramar? I think Sandy has the record at 20.??.. you might have 2nd biggest for Miramar..
@@chrisbrandtthebeefshaman9590 so I normally make that long run to pine first thing in the morning but here recently I’ve been starting right next to the launch in that grass flat
caught a close 30 inch vampire near there on sunday on 2 inch tube bait on very light spinning setup...not ultra light i kinda stopped using ultra light since most the fish im getting are bass and vampires and bonefish and my lure tends to be casted and drifted far and i need at least a light power rod to set the hook from far away, light set up is like ultra light at the bay
@@chrisbrandtthebeefshaman9590 nice i lost a maybe close to 40 inch butt months ago when the butts was spawning in the back bay.. one time i caught 2 butts back to back one was 28 in and the other 29... but my favorite is bonefish on super light tackle one heck of a run..
Another awesome video Chris I can’t wait to get back at Barrett.I absolutely love that place. I like taking my two weight fly rod and fish for the bluegill it’s insane
2wt!!! Wow! That sounds like fun. I’m heading to Montana next week and will have a fly fishing series of videos coming up hopefully. Thanks for watching and sharing. Cheers!
Thanks so much! The jig was the Strike King Bitsy Bug in their green pumpkin (medium) the trailer was mainly the Berkeley 3” Pit Boss in their green pumpkin (medium)
Insane action. Looks like a blast. Green pumpkin was a show stealer. You always use a craw trailer on the jig or ever get into a bug? Green pumpkin has a lot of shades. Would you say lighter side, middle, or darker versions? Nice video. You make it look easy 👍🏻🦵🏻🦨🗑️🔥💪🏻
Hey Chris, great vid! How are you fishing those jigs? Let them sink to the bottom with a steady retrieve or bouncing them off the bottom? Or keep them closer to the surface? Thanks in advance
Hey thanks for reaching out and checking out the video. I let it drop near the bottom and bounce it back. Sometimes depending on the current I’ll bounce it over top of the eel grass. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
@@chrisbrandtthebeefshaman9590 I get if a light or dark color is easier for them to see under certain conditions (clouds, etc), but the color itself... I don't buy it...
I suck at fishing mission bay from the shore. Super weedy. I like the Cabela's grub in a similar color. The tail action is insane. Got a bunch in a bag of plastics I bought on offer up. Might have to give mission bay a try soon. I think the big bay has larger spotties but they usually start lurking just after dark.
Hey thanks for checking out the video! The weeds can be annoying but bringing the baits right across the top can be very effective. Get out there and get some!
Awesome. You’re killin me man lol. Still very much on the injured list but at least I’m entertained. Great action, beer, and intel. Nice video Dr Jones 😉
Trader Joe's is the best for drinks and specialty foods. It's up there next to In-N-Out when it comes to Southern California iconic businesses. The rest of the country is missing out.
Kistler Helium's are nice. Another Great video. Your channel is so underrated, you'd think float tubers would be all over it by the way you show how well they do.
First time finding you on RU-vid and just getting into bay fishing. Just got a new pontoon boat and want to get out on the bay a lot more. Thank you for your tips and subscribed to see many more videos in the bay. Can you show us your float tube set up? Apologies if you have done this in a prior video, like I said just found you today! Cheers!
Welcome aboard! Glad you’re getting into bay fishing. The fishery is super fun and diverse. As for my tube setup no worries at all. Here’s a link to a video that I created just for that. Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers! Outcast Super Fat Cat with Robotic Thrusters! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FsmDx9C8-s4.html
Chris, Not sure if you would ever be willing or if there is a way we could talk outside of RU-vid comments, but with this boat we just got if you’re ever interested I would love to take you or whoever out on the bay with this pontoon boat we got. Not sure if that’s your style, but wouldn’t have to rent anything from glorietta bay and would have some shade a spot for a big cooler and some drinks of the day!
Hey thanks for watching! These were in the areas surrounding the Colorado River near Blythe. There are fish in all of the canals, drainages and oxbows in that areas. Tons of catfish and also smallmouth bass too! Just find water there and you’re good to go.
The Berkeley Gulp Minnow on an Underspin head. I used 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 ounce. There are links in the description for more details. Thanks for watching!
