Watch me as I plan to walk around the entire 116 mile shoreline of the Salton Sea during the peak of summer. From planning through the big event scheduled for summer 2015.
Nice video... I thought "Dang" wrong side of the canal, as you looked to the otherside... lol. I was curious if you were referring to Whitewater in San Gorgonia Pass, Palm Springs and from the other comment here, you were. Amazing the AQI at Salton Sea night is pegged at 500, the index only goes to 500. To my understanding the Andreas Fault terminates about where you were.
I can't believe that there's life in those waters lol. The soundtrack is fitting: those are some busy lil critters 😆. I wonder what it's like now. Thanks for posting.
My dad was one of the owners of this company a number of years ago. If you find the vintage promo video they shot, my dad is the guy not wearing the mudders and getting stuck. He just passed away in June..... I was able to get a pair of mudders when we went back to the house. The hat he wore in the promo video was sitting on his work bench, but a pest had eaten a hole in it. RIP Dad.... you will be missed.
I'm on my second pair of these shoes as I use them daily as I work on maldon mud in Essex (where the famous anual mud racel takes place) laying an replacing boat moorings, and on the whole they are great but after a while the seams become soft which sometimes turn the shoe inside out an this is actually painful as it crushes right on your ankle bone, but like I said I wear them everyday for hours so they do take quite a lot of punishment but they are good on even very soft deep mud that would have you sinking up well past your knees, But they are very expensive at around 150 pound a pair, But compared to home made wooden splashes they are much more comfortable as they are no where near as tight.
We visited the Old Pots on 13, February 2022 and measured the surface temp of the large open pot near Hodges Power Station at 275*F That was surface temp. 4" below the pot was 450F, and deeper was off the scale of the thermometer. Next time we will bring a thermometer with a higher scale, but needless to say that if one were to fall in somehow it would be fatal. The New Pots were unreachable due to flooded areas where one would have to drive. The mud is thick now and I wouldn't want to chance walking there.
@@mathewmanzano2284 Look at the gooogle map. You cannot get there neither on car or on foot. It is now accesible only by kayak, by rowing from gate through few pools, and to the mud pots.
Nice - basic idea is same as English 16th Century 'Pattens' which are easily home made. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZYXzzRb--gI.html
It's been drying for long time. As the salton sea drys the toxins like arsenic in the sand will be blown in wind and anyone breathing it will be screwed.
There are documentaries about how the Salton Sea was used for military weapons testing in the 1940's-1950's. This place contains unknown dangers underwater, and who knows what will happen once exposed if the sea does indeed fully dry out.
As of one year ago, the gate is locked, and, while one can get around it with four wheel drive, it is on private property. The real problem is that the water table has risen a bit and the road farther out near the pots is impassable. The mud is three feet deep and is thick, gooey, salty clay. Being pulled out there will cost you an enormous amount of money (do you hear the voice of experience here?). The pots are great and I have good video of them, but unless things change, the only way to get there now is to walk a long ways through some very unpleasant mud.
I am about to try these for walking the dog. The Recreation fields near my house though, one horrible sludgy quicksand mudbath. I was wondering how wide they get at the widest point when you're walking through the mud. Being vision impaired, I always walk with someone sighted on one side with me on their arm, so I wouldn't want to trip them up withthe shoes.
When fully spread-out they are pretty wide, at least double the normal width, but that will only happen if you are literally trying to walk on quicksand in a swamp.. If they are spread fully, your dog would already be up to his chin in the quicksand.
Would you be able to give me directions on how to get to the new mud pots? My car is a 4 wheel drive but from what I've seen, the path there has a sign that says "no trespassing" so I'm not sure if I'm going the right way
@Salton Sea Walk My grandpa and I used to fish out there, horrible smell of eggs, he told me it was the sulphur deposits from a long dormant volcano. He also told me (and idk if this is true) but, the salton sea was apparently originally a old salt mine that became flooded when a nearby farmer was trying to dig irrigation ditches from the colorado river. Interesting stuff. I have gone back many times since his passing, and have noticed changes in the lake, like in one spot in particular the water is now boiling, that tells me that it is perhaps becoming more active, and the usgs states it is an active volcano. Volcano's have since become a passion of mine, I've recently visited Lassen and Shasta, they are both scary to think about in eruption standards. Anyways, Just wanted to share my personal story. Excellent video!
I am in a university geology class right now and I am studying the volcanic activity in Southern California, Specifically the Salton Sea. Interestingly enough you are correct, the Salton sea was not naturally formed but instead was a human-made lake from the colorado river. Farmers were trying to reroute the river to their farms and instead, the water from the river accidentally got off course and filled what is now the Salton Sea.

Man I’m from Brawley but was forced to move earlier this year after finishing high school I couldn’t find a job out there but I’m currently in San Diego slaving my hours away self educating this channel is a great inspiration and I promise to you and the rest of the valleys surrounding it I will come back and do my best to help fix the issue but we need people to continue to bring awareness to get it moving or else by the time I’m able to help will be too late
I've always proposed a canal system from the gulf of Mexico that helps keep the Salton Sea at the appropriate level. The Mexicans should have no problem with allowing this because of the migratory birds that both countries depend on. It should be a money maker also. The water would be flowing downhill about 140 feet which could generate electricity. It could also possibly be a money maker in that the gulf of Mexico would provide better water that might increase the quality of the Salton Sea, making it a tourist attraction again where people want to play and live.
