I just found your channel! It looks like I can’t comment on some of your newer videos because it is on kids RU-vid.? I live in Illinois and I also love the prairie. My neighborhood park has been working on creating Prairie habitat right here in the middle of Chicago! I love your channel Because it is like a refresher for me. I first learned about the prairie when I was in college in the 80s! Thank you for your content. I especially love the folklore.
Heard one story that before Ada Hayden discovered this track of prairie . It was originally owned by a family farm. Unlike most farmers who tilled the land to grow crops, the farmers of the plot of land only used the land for hay, what's impressive is that they didn't mix in any traditional non native cattle grass but instead used whatever grew in the prairie in thier hay and managed to maintain an amazing intact tall grass prairie.
I have a patch of yellow star grass in my lawn (dense shade under oaks), so I get to study them. My typicals have six tepals, but sometimes they have four, five, or six, with four being the rarest. They look like sedge, until the flower shows up. The seeds are in pods, and resemble poppy seeds. Louisiana
On a scale of 1-10 how aggressive would you say cup plant is? I love the idea of having it in my suburban backyard but am also afraid of having to fight it constantly
I have had severe asthma early in my life and as recent 5 years it was triggered to the severe once again. I nebulized and used the inhaler daily and it was only as an emergency relief but still low lung capacity for breathing. Three weeks ago I came across a meme that suggested Blue Vervain's affects and ordered it with hopefulness but doubted. Day one I instantly felt more air capacity I was used to and I haven't needed an inhaler or neb for the first time in five years. I feel lively and has produced more stamina sexually. I feel revived. My wife had a nasty cold that she was medicating with Nyquil and suffering for days. I finally convinced her to take one capsule. She instantly started feeling better and is on the recovering end of the cold faster than she has before. Now I'm telling everyone close to me about this amazing herb. I don't ever give reviews but this herb is saving my life.
Mine are planted in a semi shady area, so they behave a little better. To keep them from any leaning I have some clear fishing line stretched across that area. So fun to see the few goldfinches we have left in this suburban food desert perch and eat the seeds outside my living room window. Also fun to see insects , bees and sometimes a hummingbird sip water from the “cups”.
IPG, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I live in suburban Chicago and I'm trying to use my yard as a "native way station" for all the various butterflies and bees that struggle to find appropriate habitat nowadays. And your videos have provided untold inspiration along the way. Thank you so much for everything you do, and the fantastic scholarly and practical research you give us access to. You are the very best.
I love meadow wildflowers, native ecology, folklore, and your channel! I’ve been evolving my garden in phases to be all native to my area - and found your channel that way. Thanks for your videos and your folk knowledge. I believe it’s crucial for humanities survival going forward 🌞 especially the need for a greener world.
Thanks so much for this information. Just as an addition, I have moved the cup plants around in my garden quite a lot and they were not hard to transplant at all. Even the tiniest bit of root on one end will do it. However, they do kind of freak out and look like they might die the first summer you do this and then make a great come back the next year. Or at least that has been my experience.
Great video! So f un and informative. Loved the outtake at the very end. I'm growing some Joe Pye Weed in my backyard pocket prairie this year and am finding it hard to distinguish from sunflower while young and under av foot high. Your description of the leaves will be very helpful. Thank you!
High I’ve watched your lead plant video but comments are off, can I ask do you know the best way to germinate the seeds an what soil conditions are best ?
I started 2 lead plants last month in all purpose potting mix. They have sprouted, and are tiny. They are growing in an unheated greenhouse where it's been up to over 100 inside, and down to low 30s. I hope this helps!
Wow! Thanks for your lovely and informative video! What a marvellous plant. Also very cool that you wore a shirt and hat that blended so well with the subject matter. Cheers!
Mine from seed bloomed the second year but they looked like these the third year. SW Ohio. They are very tiny seedlings- water from below in a tray if growing in pots, which I recommend.
@@jdy1054 thanks for the info! My seeds actually didn't take at all! I'm sure I probably put them into the garden as I used the soil for other plants - let's hope I don't have Joe pye weed all over the garden next spring!!
Greetings from Roseville Michigan near Lake St.Clair, swamp milkweed is my favorite ❤️,ive had monarch butterflies lay more eggs on the swamp rather than my common 👍
