Thank you for uploading these beautiful high resolution film scans, seeing these sharp images makes the past feel more reachable than those poor quality 480p scans.
The children are praying in Cantonese because most of the Chinese immigrants in the 20th century were from southern China, mostly from the Toisan (Taishan) area which speaks Cantonese. The Old St. Mary's Church in the video still exists, but most of the Chinese congregants nowadays at the parish speak Mandarin and there is a bilingual Mandarin/English Mass at 11 AM.
Yes, especially in a place like San Francisco with a long history of Chinese immigration. Since the Gold Rush began in California in the 19th century, there has been a huge influx of Chinese laborers into San Francisco from southern China, especially from the “四邑”Siyi (A geographical concept in Guangdong consisting of four counties) regions of Guangdong (台山Taishan, 开平Kaiping, 新会Xinhui and 恩平Enping counties). In Chinese, San Francisco is even known as “旧金山” (the old Gold Mountain), The “old” is in contrast to the “new Gold Mountain” Melbourne, which was discovered later. This video is very valuable in that it documents the lives of Catholics descended from the early Chinese settlers, who, as you know, are not a large percentage of the Chinese population. However, as history has progressed, the population of Chinese immigrants to the United States is now becoming more diverse, with people coming from all parts of China and from all walks of life. And because of China's policy of promoting Mandarin, people now generally speak Mandarin, and the status of dialects is much lower than before. I am glad to hear that this church still exists and has many Chinese parishioners, which is a very meaningful testimony.
@@eliazarcone LOL So was John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I and our current pope (although he was raised in Argentina after his parents immigrated so he's more fluent in Spanish). None of them had the flair that Pius XII had with those rolling 'R's.'
@@retroguy9494 Pope Francis was born and raised exclusively in Argentina, but definitely to Italian (I think from Sardinia) parents and raised among many people who spoke both languages.
@@qboxer "Humanity would sink into eternal darkness, it would fall into a dull and primitive state, were the Jews to win this war." - Goebbels, January 21st 1945 Take off the lenses of delusion and look at the world today, especially the West. Look at how disgustingly depraved and corrupt it has become. Humanity lost WW2.
Really interesting, may I ask, how did you experience the transition from the Latin Mass to the Novus Ordo? How was the atmosphere at the time regarding these changes?
I like how they gave all the people present a glass(wine?) to toast the Prince's baptism, and even the infant prince takes a sip & waves 😅 I wish their was such simple solidarity between ruler and the people nowadays. God save the Monarchs of Monaco, may their reign be as long as Christ's and always under Him! Ave Christus Rex, Regis Regnum, Princeps Pacis!
He looked like he was a great and very knowledgeable man. I'm very glad that we have these archived recordings of these amazing people, who once walked the Earth. ❤️
Look at their faces! The respect they have him! This is a note for us that the old ways are the best ways. Pray for the restoration of the Old Roman Rite to her pride-of-place.
Dear lord, what is this? Over 100 likes on a comment promoting the TLM and not one person fighting in the comments... we may yet have hope! 😂❤ Deo Gratias!
S. S. Venerabilis Pivs PP. XII was my maternal grandfather's uncle. He married my parents and died a few months after. I always wish he would have lived to see me born. He said to my mother, "You're going to have 4 heartaches and one joy!" My mother didn't understand him and asked her father what did he mean, but sadly he never elaborated on it. My mother had 3 still births before I was born and my younger brother died at 3 years old when I was 5 years old. My mother says to this day, that I am S. S. Venerabilis Pivs PP. XII 's miracle and her one joy and the other babies were her heartaches. My parents are married 66 years and Pivs will be deceased 66 years 9 October 2024. Thank you my Great Great Uncle for my life!! I love you even though we never met. ❤ 🇻🇦 😇 ✝️ 🙏
So 80 years ago, the Pope was able to give a speech in English and many other languages...and today, the Pope can only speak Italian and Spanish...Something went wrong.
@@-filiporozthere have been many popes, and saints who were only fluent in a single language, such as St. Augustine. Some have the gift of language, but it is not a prerequisite for the offices of the Church.
@l33tl33p, your comment is pointless because I'm a Bosnian Croat, and my language is Croatian or Serbocroatian...I simply think nowadays, the Pope has to know English because we live in such times.
