"POPE PROCLAIMS DOGMA OF THE ASSUMPTION! In a Holy Year ceremony of pomp and magnificence before 200,000 in St. Peter's Square, His Holiness affirms the taking into Heaven of the Virgin Mother, body and soul. This new article of faith, first since 1870, now becomes the unquestioned dogma of the Catholic Church!"
On 1 November 1950, invoking his dogmatic authority, Pope Pius XII defined ex cathedra the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary:
"By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory."
