My aunt Betsy (love her) or maybe my uncle played Hoyt when I first heard him, and I was hooked (at 9yrs) lol, I was always interested in music (Thank You Mom, RIP).
This was co-written by Hoyt's backup singer Cathy Smith, who was the inspiration for her ex Gordon Lightfoot's song "Sundown." Cathy is also rumored to have inspired The Band's legendary song "The Weight" when she was their groupie before she met Gordon, but Cathy is probably most infamous for having given John Belushi the speedball that killed him when they were using drugs together.
Lay lady lay Lay across my big brass bed Lay lady lay Lay across my big brass bed Whatever colors you have in your mind I show them to you and you see them shine Lay lady lay Lay across my big brass bed Stay lady stay Stay with your man a while Until the break of day Let me see you make him smile His clothes are dirty but his, his hands are clean And you are the best thing that he's ever seen Stay lady stay Stay with your man a while Why wait any longer for the world to begin You can have your cake and eat it too Why wait any longer for the one you love When he's standing in front of you Lay lady lay Lay across my big brass bed Stay lady stay Stay while the night is still ahead I long to see you in the morning light I long to reach for you in the night Stay lady stay Stay while the night is still ahead I love this song. Close friends from the mill, getting together on Wednesday nights to bar-b-que, dance to Hoyt Axton, and tell stories. Good times. I loved those days!
Who can't LOVE this song ? ? ? I love the Stone's, Jefferson Airplane, Dylan, Neil Young and so many other great R&R's BUT this one song that get's 'me toe's a tappin', me 'art beatin' and me marching around me room. ONE OF vee BEST SONG'S ever...... F all the so called "CLASSIC'S" this is the "TOP'S"...................
This song gives a pretty close desription of the early relationship between my late wife and I. I has been my favourite song since I first heard it. I play it every now and then, sometimes without tears.
I have always had the impression that Hoyt loved music for the sake of the music and never for the sake of the money. I think that has something to do with why his music is so great and I like it so much.
My kid brother and I used to sing the chorus of this song when we were growing up. I was a teenager and he was in grade school. It’s a wonderful memory, and we didn’t even like country music.
