The Quincy Jones episode had more of a big band than usual with more horn action. For the 50th anniversary, it needs to go to orchestral levels at Radio City. As a result, they'll need two drummers.
I did a google search and found out that the first Wayne's World skit premiered the Saturday right after the movie Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure hit theaters now that is incredibly unreal but then again Mike Myers did conceive of the Wayne character from the Canadian skit show he was on in 1987. I just had always assumed Wayne's World was created as a Bill and Ted spoof.
Jan Hooks was a top Groundlings performer prior to SNL. Second City, Groundlings, UCB, by the 15th season there was this incredible talent ecosystem developed of sketch talent who could *write* sketches as well as perform and had already workshopped tested characters (eg Wayne’s world)
I don't understand for the life of me how Lorne Michaels allowed Pete Davidson two weeks off one of his seasons of SNL to film "The Suicide Squad", yet he made Jon Lovitz the movie or the show. Lovitz is not only so much more talented than Davidson, but Lovitz actually put in effort and looked like he wanted to be on SNL. It's a shame. Also, I always wanted to see Hanukkah Harry team up in a sketch with David S. Pumpkins. It's a fanboy dream, but it could happen.
love these videos ,only wish they were longer. we are getting into the nostalgic years for me as my earliest SNL memories are from the Myers/Carvey/Chris Rock/Sandler era
When Nora Dunn left was pretty much the beginning of when I stopped watching. Without her skits with Jan Hooks, I felt a big hole in the shows skits because they provided SO many funny pairings together. Attitudes, the Sweeney Sisters, I'm really surprised they let her go. She was HILARIOUS!
This cast wouldn't have lasted forever under any circumstances, but the massive mistake of letting Andrew Dice Clay host (supposedly one of the handful of SNL episodes that Lorne won't allow to rerun under any circumstances) didn't help much.
Fun fact: Jon Lovitz WOULD still hang around next season and a joke would be made at his expense during the season finale's cold opening which centered around Dennis Miller leaving SNL.
One note on the Andrew Dice Clay episode was a censoring issue up front. I haven’t seen it in ages, but someone was either late on the button or missed it altogether.
And this is when it started. The departure of Lovits and arrival of the terrible Schneider ushered in the black hole of SNL in the 90’s. The only shining light was Chris Farley. He was the only reason I tuned in once in awhile when I had nothing better to do.
The Continental is such a remarkable sketch because it's the only sketch I can think of where the host is up there all by themselves, with absolutely no help from the cast. The fact that they even tried it is amazing, let alone that Walken pulls it off each and every time.
I’m sorry but Andrew Dick is so annoying and makes every conversation he contributes to horrible to listen to. You can not enjoy a sketch and explain specifically why it didn’t resonate with you, but why does he always have to be so condescending with his criticism?? It honestly doesn’t even seem like Jon and Amanda even liked having him there either, and the conversation would have been a lot more productive without him.
I still have 3 wall posters from that era hanging up in my garage: Toonces the Driving Cat, Dana Carvey as George Bush and Wayne's World. I bet those posters are worth $0.25 now!!! Nice
But why wasn't Nora Dunn's contract extended? Seems like it might have quietly been because of her boycotting the Dice episode maybe? Having her on for one more season with this group would have been fantastic. She was great on the show and with Hooks. Would love for you guys to interview Dunn if you can!
