So this is real nerdy. But I was back in the sixth grade when i found out this was the true final boss of the game and that there was a dark star. On the playground my friend didn't believe me and told me there was no dark star. So get ready for this. I also had a gameboy camera and printer so I took a picture of my tv with the gameboy camera and printed it. Basically a really grainy image on a receipt tape sized sticker. When i showed him he said it was photoshopped....
So, there are two games for N64. Evangelion 64, which is based on NGE, the serious anime with some serious themes. It’s OST is very goofy in N64 soundfont, and it sounds like a Mario game or something. And there’s Kirby 64 which came almost a year after Eva 64. Remember, Zero Two theme was before C-R-O-W-N-E-D or other final boss themes. And still, K64 has absolute bangers like Zero Two theme or Factory Inspection.
As a kid, I loved shiver star for it's snowy and Christmasy feeling. Coming back to the game when I was 18 had me feeling very differently. Sure, it was snowy and I love the snow (despite being a Texan who anytime he sees snow he covers himself up in five different layers), but it felt dark and a feeling of emptiness. It's not bereft of enemies, no, but you got the feeling that the world was dead. Then I took a look at the planet itself and, yep, for sure, it was a post-apocalyptic Earth that had frozen over. That realization made me feel very sad after.
In every other game in the series until forgotten land, the ost holds off on the existential masterpieces in favor of happy go lucky adorable Kirby catchy tunes, until the very end. This game just couldn’t help itself, it had to pull at my heart strings
