I have been coming to Hawaii for 24 years, since 2000. I have seen many changes. I have loved this culture and Hawaiian people very openly, came here with an open heart, not to be put into some racial little box, yet have been disrespected on a few accounts and it is has been very sad to me.

As someone who grew up in South-Africa and lived through the horrors of racial discrimination and the ancestral avenging, I can attest that supporting racism in any form is not progressive, it is shortsighted to say the least and it takes a bigger person to see the heart and not the race of another human being. One's race is no guarantee that one will be a good person either, drug abuse, srxual violence, aggressive dominance is real in all cultures. In South Africe we worked hard at truth and reconciliation and accepting our diverse cultural melting pot, yet racial discrimination is still not something of the past, sexual offences, raping, murdering of farmers still continue till this day. It is an eye fir an eye which leaves us all blind and projecting ancesteal trauma onto any unsuspecting tourist, lashing out at any time as if that particular person was some kind of perpetrator. Many lical people are into drugs, sex offenders and downright bullies

I'm a student at Windward community College and took 'Ōlelo Hawaii 101/102 then 201/202 from Kumu Keoki and also ask aunty Tuti a million questions. It's frustrating because I'm a slow learner. My Tutu was pure Hawaiian and spoke it around the house all the time but I was too stupid and ignorant not to learn the language then. My goal is to learn 'Ōlelo Hawaiian so I can converse and understand it with other native Hawaiian speakers. Makemake loa au 'Ōlelo Hawaii.

My first time listing to this podcast, Jake you are such an incredible person, my favorite player, a real inspiration, God bless you always. You are the reason I fell in love with the ukulele, you are the inspiration to teach it and reach out to the world with it. I have been blessed to see you twice in the past 2 years, I'm 73 years old, praying you come again to the Twin Cities to listen to you once more!!

For those of you who commented on the fact that they were born and raised in Hawaii but have no hawaiian blood….therefore they have never considered themselves or called themselves Hawaiians. I hope this might shed some light on what this guy is saying about wether or not you are considered a Hawaiian or a kanaka. To the kanaka’s we are living in the Hawaiian nation and that’s where we are from. We don’t really acknowledge Hawaii as part of the USA or the being the 50th state. With that said, we don’t ever call ourselves Americans like the rest of the people who are from the United States and that’s because the Hawaiian nation was overthrown illegally. So just like people from Japan are considered to be Japanese and people from Australia are considered to be Australian’s, and the same could be said about the rest of the countries/nations around. Now if you take this into account, then one could easily conclude that people from the Hawaiian nation/kingdom are Hawaiians. Hope this makes sense and clarifies things for everyone.

They should participate in elections. Self interested politicians get in and the results are very evident. They then blame their woes on white people and even tourists. Not voting has consequences too. The trash politicians count on nobody showing up on election day. Hating everything and everyone changes nothing. Look what happened in 2016. The people spoke.

Love the blame the victim and justify the racism mentality. I have no intention of ever going to a racist dump like Hawaii, but as someone from Las Vegas (even if I don't live there at the moment), Hawaii seems to come to me even though I'd rather that it didn't.

I mean I get it, but for example as much as I wish my home amusement park Cedar Point wasn't as crowded as it is, when you have the best park in the world you get everyone coming there. It's similar to Hawaii. You can't just have one of the most beautiful islands on the planet and expect nobody to come and when everybody does, there will be a wide range of people, including rude tourists. Everyone is different.

If you are a tourist in Hawai'i you are a guest and you must respect the land (aina), respect the traditions, dont destroy heiau and hale. Respect sacred lands and burial areas. Learn Hawaiian as much as you can. You are truly not in a state but stolen territory since 1893 but colonized by haole (foreigners) since 1700s when captain Cook came to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and was defeated. Kamehameha was a true ali'i (chieftain) and there were several ali'i since and Liliukalani became queen she was very revered and treated even commoners (ainana) fair. Hawaiian was spoken but yet after the great takeover by the Doles and the US Military of Queen Emma who was forced to abdicate. Many of the areas surrounding Honolulu were under military siege and later the citizens lost independence. So you see ever since the takeover in 1893 until statehood was wrong and after 1959 the tourist industry became stronger and many developments came in and disrespected the lands and traditions of the Kanaka Maoli. I am a haole and believe Hawaii was/is stolen and needs to have a majority of lands returned to tge Kanaka Maoli. I visited Honolulu and enjoyed listening to the Hawaiian langage spoken in a Sunday Service. The Chaplain spoke fluent Hawaiian and the ōlelo was quite colorful
