Thanks @user-bj1sq7jm5n 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍 The vast majority of shots were captured with a circular polarized ND filter - which does aid greatly in reducing glare/reflection.
Hi - did you see an increase in WRITE speeds to the nas with the RAM upgrade please? I have the 1821+ with 8x10TB drives, 10G Card and with standard 4GB RAM installed. I am getting ~850MB write speeds to the NAS, if I upgrade my RAM to 32gb or 64gb will I see an increase to my write speeds?
I just installed 64gb of Crucial ram in my 1821+ and now I'm consistently getting north of 1GB/s write speeds to the NAS, I was already get >1GB reads anyway, so yea, having the extra ram does make a significant difference! since it helps cache the writes to ram as it writes to the disk
You seem to basically discount AF. Im currently deciding between this and the Nikon Z 105mm, with the dilemma being 2x vs AF. How much experience do you have with auto focus bracketing features built into mirrorless cameras? The ability to set parameters, press go, and have the camera take dozens of perfectly bracketed shots seems like it would shift the lack of AF from being a non-issue into THE issue. Thoughts?
@jdpattok4357, yuppers I certainly did discount AF. When shooting at 1:1 magnification or higher, autofocus is useless. Sure, automated focus bracketing is cool but the cost savings by going with a MF lens should give you budget to grab a focusing rail. This is just personal preference: if a camera feature didn't exist two decades ago, I've learned how to accomplished the desired finish product without it. Having a car that can park itself is nice, but I'd rather park it myself as I know how to do so.
@@neilfisher Gotcha, yeah I figure the initial focus would be done manually either way. It's for focus stacks with 30, 40, 50+ images that it seems a focusing rail would be extremely tedious, and the auto bracketing would be a game changer. My experience is with wildlife, though, so that's purely speculation on my part. Thanks for the input. Great video by the way!
Thanks @ 👍Greatly appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you found it helpful and it's always great to hear when others share the same respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃
Very nicely explained along with your patient companion who was patiently hearing all what you were saying with interest :) With so much of snow and wind, is it advisable to expose the drone ? What additional care is required in an environment setup you were, for the drone, battery etc? Some tips, please?
Very good question @DestinationsNextwithNandagopal 👍 It's certainly not advisable to fly in heavy snow as it will likely find its way inside the aircraft, but with the temperature so cold - it's possible to tape shut the ventilation opening. The aircraft used to capture the snow fall imagery has done so on numerous instances and is still operating well today. Keeping batteries warm before being used goes a long way in providing a proper discharge rate once in use 😃😃😃 I've got an entire video focusing on cold weather photography that might help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cjov6toYh2I.html
Your vocal delivery is awesome - how you say things and the intelligence behind what you are saying. If I could, I'd subscribe again - did so last year.
Solid question @Bradimus1981. There's a not a great difference in how a macro lens is used when shooting photos or video. Most cinematographers shooting macro will use a dedicated motion control system with focus and iris motors, which really puts the importance on image quality.
@@neilfisher Well, what I will be photographing is stationary. The ant formicarium will have moving ants inside, but I just need something that can zoom in on a small area and record video well. lol
I am primarily a still photographer. This is my first experience with a drone. I'm facing a challenge with video editing since I don't have a video editor. I use Windows and prefer not to invest in the full Adobe suite with Premier Pro. Can you recommend some alternative video editors for Windows? I found your video helpful. Thank you.
@dougsturgess2651 I am a long time Adobe user (think 2005 long time) and make use of make applications in their Creative Suite. That said, I have also used Davinci Resolve and would suggest giving it a try. 👍👍👍
I have no words... amazing video! i would have called it a "tutorial" but you made it so great that it surpases the meaning of an educational video! you deserve more followers to share and educate your amazing knowlage!
This is an excellent reference resource video. I am just beginning to use my DJI mini 3 pro and I live in the perfect location for this type of cinematography. I am taking notes and you have gained a new sub. 👍🙌🇲🇽
Hi, thanx for the informative video. I currently edit 4k videos on my Mac (attached directly to a Drobo 5D3 via thunderbolt 3) that's at least 5 years old and has an ethernet connection maxed out at 1000baseT. Will this Synology drive upgrade be useful? I'm thinking of switching out my Drobo for this.
Yes, the DS1821+ paired with a 10GBe to Thunderbolt 3 adapter will allow for the speeds required. Ironically, OWC makes a terrific adapter that should work for your needs.
To my knowledge Apple only manufacturers at 1,000Mbps Ethernet to Thunderbolt adapter - you'll find the speeds of the OWC 10GBe adapter significantly faster 👍
Nice presentation. Thanks for sharing valuable knowledge. I will follow instructions while operating same gimble I have. Good luck for your future videos.
Great video and content, just bought my first drone and getting started with capturing footage and trying to create some content. Videos like yours are really helpful and I think that the way you are showing the stick movements for some of the compound movements is great. Keep up the great content, really appreciated.
Such great information. Some other vids have spoken about the value of selecting a more vintage Synology unit that supports decoding video faster if you use Plex or similar. Is it worth 'going to the older stuff' for that purpose, or getting one of the newer 2023 models?
Unfortunately, as great as Synology is, their development cycles regularly see glaciers passing by at break-neck speeds. I have no idea why he bought a NAS from 2020 in 2024, but even the newer models use the trashiest AMD CPUs Synology was able to find. His DS1821+ runs on a 14 nm AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B from Q1/2018 and a newer NAS, e.g. the DS923+ boasts a 14 nm AMD Ryzen Embedded R1600 from Q2/2019. That's what they're offering in 2024, with a straight face to put a cherry on top. And yes, to cut a few more cents of the already anemic CPUs, they decided to ditch integrated graphics. So good-bye Plex, unless you grab a DS918+ or a similar model. That's the one I got and I'll run it until the day it dies or Synology comes to its senses and starts offering NASes with actual CPUs in it that deserve the name. Blows the mind how they'd rather alienate all of their Plex users instead of offering a model that isn't already 5 years old when it hits the market. They're gonna lose more money due to lost sales than they stand to gain from the miniscule savings. I guess the bean counters in Taipeh weren't able to figure that out.
When I purchased the DS1821+ in 2023, Synology had yet to release their DS1823xs+... and for my needs the latter is still the more cost effective choice that delivers equal performance. I use the DSD1821+ only for video and photo storage and editing - and don't have need for real time video decoding. Don't really think it's mind blowing that a company identifies the differing customer usages of their products and scales accordingly. The Plex userbase likely doesn't represent an adequate product share to make proactive targeted product development worthwhile. Just my two cents 👍
I highly appreciate and respect your discussion of ethics of macro photography at the end of this video. Bravo! And I completely agree. Live and let live.
Great review. I've got one and I'm about to head out. The Z8 has focus peaking so it should help. I wanted to ask, how do you get that lovely banner at the bottom of your videos with the image metadata? Do you do this manually?
Many thanks @sinetwo 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃 Yes, I take the time to manually add EXIF data to shots - just figure it helps others learn and better understand how specific imagery is captured.
Thank you for the great introduction and the part about ethics at the end! I want to get into macro photography, but currently I only own the Canon RF 85/f2 for that field, but it only works on bigger subjects like flowers or taller funghi. Would you suggest getting the newer RF 100mm Macro or should I rather adapt the older EF 100mm Macro and get the Laowa 25mm 2.5-5X Ultra Macro on top? Both options would cost about the same...
