Hello and welcome to the Earthtones Girl Podcast! My name is Denise and this is my channel about knitting, sewing and all things handmade! This is my space to make and live in my own earthy tone of voice!!
I’ve knitted many heel flaps and gussets but never the way you taught. Hope I’m correct in my interpretation. Row 2 you slip the first st pwise and purl the row and knit the last st which is twisted. Row 3 you slip wyif and then bring the yarn to the back so you can knit the first stitch ( this wraps the yarn around the slipped stitch) I hope this is correct after watching the video until I knew every word. Thanks Denise for offering so many great patterns and tutorials. I’m starting the one more step pattern next. Is there a tutorial or do I just find the classes that apply?
Perhaps that can be an alternative but I think you still stitch through the back on both sides when you resolve the YO..... I bet it isn't symmetrical 🤔🤔🤔
@@rachelcunningham2498 I would have to experiment with it to say one way or another. And Yarn overs, by design, create holes, which I would not want in the toe of my sock. Unless it were part of a specific design feature. The best part is there are many options, depending on what you were looking for and there is no right or wrong way.
Glad to see you back! I am also more at ease following a school year (even though I am LONG past the need), but never could put a reason towards it. Yours make sense to my brain (I always thought it was because I loved school- summers were difficult for me. Perhaps it's both?)
Oh I missed you so much even though I didn’t knit any sock. (Knitted 3 sweaters and a cape) I tried the heel tab but just couldn’t get it. I just don’t like German short rows because I can’t see them. OH, I love toe ups!
It's good to see you! I am interested in seeing your cast on tutorial. I have not attempted a toe up sock for two reasons. One is I hate the cast on, and two is how to figure when to start the heel. On your comment about techniques associated with specific knitters--don't forget I Cord. Elizabeth Zimmermann originated I cord. She originally called it Idiot cord after the idiot strings on mittens. When I was growing up that's what we called them, no worries about being insulting. 😄 She shortened it to I Cord so it wasn't insulting.
I have new Opal DK yarn ordered and I just purchased your DK pattern. WOW!! I really don't know if in Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex winters if I will need DK, but it's worth a try. It may become my new winter sock. I wear socks without shoes in my house all the time. Do you have a good source for cotton blend socks for summer. My toes are always cold even when it is 100 degrees outside. I've worn Premier yarns cotton shortie socks all summer. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for purchasing my pattern Linda!!! I hope you enjoy it!!! Regarding cotton blend sock yarn. I haven't knit with cotton in over 20 years. I would suggest a google search, asking around on Instagram or search some Ravelry groups. I'm sure there are cotton yarn sock knitters out there.
You’re the best Denise! So good to see you again! I have also fallen in love with the Shorty Heel Tab socks. They are such a great way to use leftovers and get a second pair of socks out of a 100 gram skein! I was introduced to the pattern by the Knits and Pieces podcast. You give some great ideas for modifying them too. Looking forward to your future projects!
Hello! I am new here but looking forward to your videos. I’ve been knitting since I was ten but believe it or not, I have only done scarves, mittens, hats, sweaters, blankets etc. but what’s the one thing I haven’t made?? Socks! 🧦
I am not a fan of the Ravelry Comments section and I also find that it is overwhelming/ cumbersome. You are not alone. I did it once, but I won't do it again. If I want to get a hold of the designer else where.
I just finished my first sock! 😋 Only a couple noticeable mistakes, thankfully, due to my own noobiness. Thank you so much! These videos are so, so helpful.
It is. I wear my smaller size at night. For me, that is a medium and it is snug. While knitting and doing chores I prefer wearing the next size up. It avoids that pinching you described.
@@corgikat21 wow! Thank you so much. I never thought to wear two different sizes one for sleep and one for “work”. I am so grateful to you for sharing that!!
What a coincidence. I've just finished knitting my first toe-up shorty socks, too! I didn't have a heel tab pattern but improvised and added one myself. That's what I love about socks; tinkering with patterns. Like you, I prefer cuff down but to-up will be handy if I don't know how much yarn I have and can adjust the leg length without playing yarn chicken!
It’s so wonderful to see you again! You have been missed but I’m happy you did what you needed to do for you. I empathize with you regarding the arthritis in your thumb. My hands are very arthritic and it’s no fun. But thank goodness I can still knit and cross stitch or I would not know how to survive! I hope your children have a great school year band I look forward to your next video. 🤎🧡💚
Hi Denise, loved this tutorial and the link to the heel tab pattern. Looking for the link to Mina Philipp's mini heel flap and gusset? Thanks for all your help, there's no telling how many socks I have knit with your shadow wrap heel!!
Hi Denise, It’s great to see and hear you again, it’s like seeing an old friend again and picking up where we left off🫶🏿🥰😁. Yeah😀 - team toe-up over here. I like how you explained the struggle with the heeled hem as I have a pair unfinished because I messed up on that. I just need to motivate myself to finish them. Your tab socks looks great. Hope your wrist support continues to help your hand strain. We get excited about our crafts but we must never fail to practice self-care. Always love your content.
Hi it’s lovely to see you back. I just wanted to say thank you for recommending two books that you had read, The Wartime Book Club and The Little Wartime Library. I thoroughly enjoyed them xx
I hope you learn how to LOVE Toe Up Socks! I am fearful of SSS so I do 2aaT-ToeUp on Magic Loop with Shadow Wrap Short Row heel! I love Norman, too. ❤️🧶👵🧶❤️
Heeelllooo!!!! I have missed seeing you on RU-vid. I think summer should always be relaxing and when September rolls around I am ready to learn. I hope your new tutorials will be out soon. You are truly an amazing teacher and I learn soooooo much. Give hugs to the kids and enjoy watching what they will be learning this year.
I always think a forethought heel is when you put in scrap yarn where the heel will go as you knit, which you can then pick up above and below then pull out the scrap yarn; and an afterthought heel is when you decide where the heel will go when you're done knitting, pick up stitches, then cut the yarn. Doesn't really matter though! Tomato tomato 😄 Thank you for sharing!! I love your shorty tab socks!
Lovely to see you again and to learn what you’ve been up to. 😊 My vision isn’t the best - and natural light is great - but I’d see your socks better with more illumination. Please consider it. 😉
No, I don’t have a provisional cast on video. There are many available on RU-vid though. Just letting you know, this pattern doesn’t require a provisional cast on.
Welcome back! Your socks are always amazing, especially in color choices and modifications. You started me on my sock journey for which I am so grateful. I've had that shortie tab sock in my queue forever and now feel I can actually make it. Thank you for your inspiration!
Thank you for these tutorials. I got your DK sock pattern with the shadow wrap heel and watched the videos and feel 100% confident to do my first heel.
