Like others in this comment section, RU-vid randomly recommended me this video essay and i had to pause it and go see the film before continuing this vid. Well I'm back and I am glad that i got to watch this one stille in theaters. Most interesting and fun to watch horror film I have seen since hereditary. Thanks YT gods for the random recommendation
meh, I didn't care for it. PPl over hyped it for me so I thought I was going into something absolutely AMAZING. also... suddenly EVERYONES favorite actor is david dastmalchian. I tuck and rolled off the hype train.
I really liked 2/3rds of the movie untill it decided to go for a possession storyline, the last sequence really nailed the cursed footage vibe, but i kind of wish we had gotten more of that in the final third of the film instead of the played out posession, a story.
@@joshisaliv3591 absolutely right. The reason I mentioned it ‘breaking its own illusion’ was just because it was a criticism that some people seemed to have of the film. Some people said it was breaking the found footage style, making the film less effective as a whole. I completely disagree with that take and agree with yours.
@@arenomusic thank you! I’m so glad this turned out so well, because it is quite a daunting task, but I had a lot of fun! I’ll be sure to try and do a couple more of these by the end of the year.
@@lvdfilms6890 I’d rather this video not be the place for this discussion, but it was used for the skeleton image during the interstitials. They used AI as a template and then further edited it, which is what was used in the film. All I’ll say is that I find it really bizarre how everyone was up in arms about the very brief use of AI in a small indie film, but no one seemed to care when it was revealed that Furiosa used it as well.
I normally don't just subscribe to a channel unless I've watched multiple videos and have plans to watch more...but you did such a great job here I'm absolutely subscribing!!! Well done
Thanks so much! These video essays won’t be nearly as frequent because of how long they take to make but I will definitely do more alongside my normal reviews.
Thanks so much! I’m so happy to hear that it worked well! I’m not sure when I’ll do my next video essay like this because it took a lot of work to do but I’ll definitely try to do some more this year!
I did mention that, as I said, the film does break its own found footage illusion, but it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s just a way to further tell the story. I assume if they had a higher budget, they would’ve created some 1970s-esque ads that would’ve played during the breaks instead of the behind the scenes footage.
I wish it messed with my head more. Would have been better as a Twilight Zone short imo. It made me think of an episode of Black Mirror called 'Game Over.'. Gimmick aside, that episode messed with me a lot.
I stumbled upon tthis video snd immediately stopped to go and watch the movie, I thank you for that. This movie truly shows that the creators did their homework to a T.
Its honestly one of my favorite horror films of all time, the "lost media" aspect of it is something im really into, and the movie itself is legit just great, too bad they lost the plot at the end, but other than that its amazing.
Just a nitpick, the mainstream religion in the US has always been Protestantism, from 1776 to now. “Challenging Catholicism” isn’t exactly groundbreaking for the 1970s, Catholicism has always been historically looked down upon in America.
Not to call anyone in the comments out, but how can you talk about suspension of disbelief for a horror movie? Thats like saying fast and the furious had an amazing plot that carried over many movies. You dont watch horror for suspension of D. Just a weird comment.
Yeah I agree. Sometimes films go too far and it can ruin the immersion but for most horror films I just suspend my disbelief as soon as I start it. I'm looking to have a good time not nitpick every little detail haha.
Really entertaining movie worth a watch, i wish they changed a few details and ways they filmed some of the behind the scenes shots but still a fun movie
Genuinely baffled at the positive reception of this movie. To me I cant understand how anyone experienced suspension of disbelief watching this movie. I felt like I was watching something made by university film students and local amateur theatre actors. So weird for me that I'm in the minority.
David Dastmalchian was born for this role. This is what I’d consider a career defining performance. However, I was incredibly confused on their choice of "demonic entity". If they'd done a little research they'd have found that Ipos wouldve made much more sense than Abraxas.
@@GetFramed maybe I should read it again but seems like it's building and building to something big and then nothing happens just you go to hell where ants torture you
I am a huge SK fan and am glad i found your channel. I like your style. Honest and fervent! I have subscribed and will look into your other videos. Thanks!
Hey bro, you know that the exorcist is basically pro catholic propaganda? It didn't challenge the church it made people more religious, and that was the intended purpose. Religious people and institutions didn't of the movie but only because of the vulgarity.
Calling it pro-catholic propaganda is oversimplifying it. It supports Christianity and the idea that if evil exists, the good must exist too. But it definitely is challenging the church in the idea that evil will always live on. Father Karras’s faith prevails over evil, the Power of Christ did not. And the vulgarity is definitely challenging, because that’s the entire point of the film. To retain your faith even when life throws horror at you. The real horror for Karras is his mother dying and the feeling of disconnect between him and his God, but the film visualises those horrors with Pazuzu distorting Regan’s face and voice.
Okay real talk…am I the only one who thought this movie was just a long episode of twilight zone or something? Like it wasn’t terrible but it was predicable, the characters were one dimensional, and it was far from scary…idk it was just kinda lame..I mean I’d watch it again for fun but idk people are acting like this is a GREAT film have me very confused as to what they got from the movie that I just didn’t ?
Well that’s fine if you didn’t care too much for it, everyone has different tastes, but this video pretty much sums up what I took from it, which was a lot. I also have another video which is simply a review on the film too without discussing all the details of it if you want to hear some thoughts about what I think of the filmmaking, directing, etc.
Heard a few people say that, and that’s ok. People have different tastes on things and if this isn’t your cup of tea then that’s fine. Did you feel like it was underdeveloped?
Thank you! I thought everyone was terrific, obviously Dastmalchian was the stand out but I never once thought any of the side characters dropped the ball. Anything in particular that stood out to you that you weren’t a fan of with their performances?
