Late Night With The Devil is an extremely fascinating horror film, and it one of my favourites in recent memory. Today, I attempt a narrated video essay where I break the film down!
All my ratings are based on a 'thumbs up/thumbs down' list. Here they are below.
Thumbs down:
1: F*****g Terrible (Really bad)
2: Snoozefest (Dull, uninteresting, unmemorable)
Thumbs half up/down:
3: Know who you are (It may only appeal to a small portion of the audience)
4: With a little help from some 'friends' (Either watch with some friends.... or watch drunk)
Thumbs Up:
5: Worth a watch (Check it out on streaming)
6: Buy it (Watch in the cinema, or purchase the physical release)
7: Top Notch (As good as it gets)

I loved how it switched from "found footage" to " movie footage" in between breaks. Im assuming these black and white sections are not part of the docu as the video quality is way too modern for that. Love how it shows the neglect of the guests and the situation they gradually put themselves in as they progress the show. Even my gf loved this movie despite the fact that the generally only likes the more gory horror movies. Really well done movie and I can't wait to see what these guys do next
@GetFramed
@GetFramed 23 дня назад
I personally believe they didn’t have the budget to create ads in the breaks so they decided to say they found unseen behind the scenes footage. It stretches a bit of credibility maybe, but it doesn’t bother me one bit. Glad you and your gf liked it!

RU-vid recommended this video out of the blue. Your first few sentences encouraged me to pause and go find it. David Dastmalchian being the star sealed the deal, I had to see it. Now I'm back and really enjoyed your video essay on it. The only thing I don't think you touched on was Lilly saying she knows Jack from the tall trees (the Grove). There were hints earlier that the Abraxus cult were charged with kidnappings. I did wonder if Lilly was part of the Grove's creepy gatherings, facilitated by the cult's human trafficking services, and that her inner demon remembers what she's blocked out. Those are the dark places my mind went anyway. It might have just been the demon saying he knows Jack was at the Grove gatherings. You watched 3 times? Does Lilly in her human form also mention Jack in the tall trees?
@GetFramed
@GetFramed 19 дней назад
Awesome that you watched the film and came back to this, glad you enjoyed hearing my perspective on it. From my interpretation, Lilly herself never said anything about Jack at the ‘tall trees’, that was all the demon that was inside of her (Abraxas). Lilly says some creepy things (‘you’re going to be very famous after tonight Jack’), but I don’t believe that Lilly mentioned the Grove herself. Interesting ideas though, that does certainly give food for thought! Such an interesting film and the kidnapping stuff went straight over my head. Maybe a fourth watch will bring new things into light!

First, I enjoyed your video. If this video is your first time at this format, I would say your future is good. And I’d say your interpretation is not one I’d previously thought of, for a reason that I’ll get into in a moment, but it’s a good one, and I’ll have to see the movie again after I’ve given it a good pause. Spoilers, naturally, will follow. What bothered and distracted me-even though I really enjoyed the movie-about _Late Night With The Devil_ is that it seemingly broke its rule: what we are about to see is the footage interlaced with backstage documentary of the episode. And why wouldn’t Jack Delroy want behind-the-scenes footage of what would likely be his most infamous episode? He seems like that kind of guy. But we get a set piece that seemingly breaks the footage rule. Go ahead and laugh, but I stayed awake for two hours trying to come up with the solution. Then one hit me, and it made the film that much creepier. At one point in the movie, a character is hypnotized with a lot of fanfare, and we see the entire hypnotism set-up before we are treated to a scene with worms, nasty and monstrous, wriggle out of the body of the primary subject in a gross horrifying way. (Tangent: the demon is called “Mr. Wriggles,” by Lilly, and there seems to be a fair amount of phallic imagery, like really big worms, throughout the movie-more details pointing to Jack’s use and abuse of women?) After the tape is rewound to where the subject believes he’s pulling worms from his body and worms start bursting out, we see no worms, just a guy acting like he’s being attacked from the inside by wriggling creeps. It turns out our magician/hypnotist has hypnotized nearly _everyone_ watching. Why we don’t see worms on replay is that we didn’t see the magician’s prep work, or build up, into his act of mass hypnotism. Later, Abraxas manifests itself in the body of the girl. Lots of really bad things happen. But the weirdest and I think, most frightening thing is that we, the viewers, were _hypnotized a second time._ This accounts for the breaking of the footage rule. I think we cease to see view footage (until the end) just before Jack believes he forces his way backstage. I imagine we were hypnotized by Abraxas, but I also wonder if it wasn’t Jack’s psychic scream as he sees the Hell that awaits him. Maybe it’s both. I don’t think it’s ever clear. And having squared that circle in my mind, I feel a bit more satisfied, but I’ll watch the movie again as I think your ritual completion angle has a lot of merit.
@GetFramed
@GetFramed 17 дней назад
Damn I never thought of the audience being hypnotised, that’s really clever! That’s an excellent insight, thanks heaps for sharing! Glad you enjoyed both the video and the movie too.

Enjoyed your essay, and I really enjoyed this film. One I'll enjoy repeat viewings of for many years to come, i think. I knew he was being shown a super dark version of his show at the end, but it never occurred to me that it was Abraxis giving him a quick taste of what Hell would be like after he dies. It's an interesting theory and it makes a lot of sense. But it was pretty clear his soul was damned. I had mostly thought of it as an elaborate trick to get him to sacrifice the girl who got away from fulfilling her role in the cult. I thought that maybe even the intention was to have Jack sacrifice Lily in the end all along because even after his wife died he never got those ratings. So they use that first "sacrifice" as part of the plan to trick him into doing the second one. Crazy devious. Oh btw, I'd call this a mixed medium film. Definitely not pure found footage, which, apparently i like better than you. I thought a couple of the Paranormal Activity sequels were pretty good. 😂

Horror in the high desert is pretty good. The first one sets up a mystery, the payoff is kinda weak tho. The 2nd movie adds to it a bit but mostly shows that what happened in the first movie, happened many times more. And there's a 3rd one coming, promising the actual payoff to the mystery. And ngl, these movies were good enough as a build up for a potential great experience for the last movie. Rec is also really good if you enjoy a more chaotic movie. Dashcam, but as a warning i have to tell you how annoying the main character is. But the things that happen and the actual horror going on is pretty cool. The main character just drags everything down, as she can't shut her mouth and is the typical COVID denying twat that harasses people on stream for money. Even during the cool horror moments she doesn't shut up. And speaking about hell house. The Carmichael manor is probably my favourite of all these movies. Its far better then any other hell house movie imo. And now one movie i wanna steer everyone away from even tho there's some people who like it for some reason. The outwaters. It has some interesting ideas, but the characters are all a bunch of dumb pretentious twats. 70% of the movie takes place in complete darkness, with a main character/camera man who's holding a wide range flashlight, a high quality one. Even showing off he can basically light everything off. Only to proceed and only use the long range mode on it. Meaning you can only see glimpses of what's going on. The ending is bonkers tho and I didn't see it coming at all. But it's not worth 90 minutes of your life only to get a glimpse of a potentially good concept and an ending where some unlikable twat cuts his own dick off for some reason.

Thank you! I thought everyone was terrific, obviously Dastmalchian was the stand out but I never once thought any of the side characters dropped the ball. Anything in particular that stood out to you that you weren’t a fan of with their performances?

@@112523 hell yeah brother, jones has gotten really bad over the years but his early work was an honest attempt at uncovering some truth imo. Breaking into bohemian grove and exposing it to the public was a big thing. I learned about that from him when i was 14 and it taught me to be wary of the rich and powerful.

He wasn't right about the frogs thing. Companies are dumping horrific toxins in our waters, but gay people aren't the result. And frogs and fish having their sexual expression impacted by the chemicals is real, but again, they aren't swimming around with pride flags. Their physiological characteristics are altered, for the worse. Making it about "gay" is horrific, and tying into a culture war to suppress the "other". But, yes. he is a twat.

Genuinely baffled at the positive reception of this movie. To me I cant understand how anyone experienced suspension of disbelief watching this movie. I felt like I was watching something made by university film students and local amateur theatre actors. So weird for me that I'm in the minority.

Okay real talk…am I the only one who thought this movie was just a long episode of twilight zone or something? Like it wasn’t terrible but it was predicable, the characters were one dimensional, and it was far from scary…idk it was just kinda lame..I mean I’d watch it again for fun but idk people are acting like this is a GREAT film have me very confused as to what they got from the movie that I just didn’t ?

Well that’s fine if you didn’t care too much for it, everyone has different tastes, but this video pretty much sums up what I took from it, which was a lot. I also have another video which is simply a review on the film too without discussing all the details of it if you want to hear some thoughts about what I think of the filmmaking, directing,etc.

yeah nah men this movie was not it, at all... l thought this was going to be like VHS, you know cheap but awesome effects, but it was completely the opposite and the ending even made sense at all. Stupid unnecessary story telling and drama just to fill half the movie its a big red flag not to mention all the plot holes
@rennugunner
@rennugunner 22 дня назад
I just liked it for all the silly fun and cool effects. The story isn’t great, and it leaves many plot holes, like you said, but you can understand what is going on more or less, and I still enjoyed it. However, I very much see why many don’t like it.

@@emiliob12 watched the movie like 2 weeks ago and l may have watched maybe 10 other movies since. Though l recall the ending most than anything as the major plot hole in the whole movie. lts like if they had 2 different endings cut in to one in post production like seriously. Dont know if you know anything about film making though but sometimes they write many endings and decide which to go with at the last stage of filming when the money starts to run dry and this can make for some weird stuff

I love LNWTD, but the 'turmoil' of the 1970s is fiction. The 1960s was far more tumultuous. Bay of Pigs, The Cuban missile crisis, the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, and prior to that, Malcolm X, the secret MKULTRA program, the anti-Vietnam war movement, the Black power movement, the rise of the feminist movement (the real one), the American Indian movement, the Chicano movement, the wave of rebellions in almost every major city, the brutal repression of the Black Panther Party and anti-war protesters across the US, and the explosion of ethnic violence created the zeitgeist of the end of the world. The 70s was a decade of repression. The war on crime plus the war on drugs and conintelpro destroyed the radical movements of the 60s. There was a feeling of demoralization and defeatism. The anti-Satanic sentiment was media spin. Nobody serious fell for that bullshit. People were more up in arms about desegregation, inflation, and a lack of social services. Serial killers and cults were issues the media wanted us to focus on rather than all of the above.

I didn’t live through either decade, but I am interested to hear the perspective of someone who did! I guess a lot of the troubles of the 60s did seep into the 70s such as the Vietnam war. But the 60s probably were more tumultuous.

@@GetFramed I was born in 1967, so I grew up in the 70s and 80s. My earliest memories were of seeing the Vietnam War on TV and watching the body count of dead soldiers, along with seeing the Moon landing. I vividly remember seeing the MOVE compound attacked in 1978 and later bombed by the City of Philadelphia in 1985, and I saw the Waco massacre in '93. That's state repression, not upheaval in the streets. Regardless, your video is intriguing, and I appreciate you mentioning the Bohemian Grove. Surprisingly, few have done so.

Hey bro, you know that the exorcist is basically pro catholic propaganda? It didn't challenge the church it made people more religious, and that was the intended purpose. Religious people and institutions didn't of the movie but only because of the vulgarity.
@GetFramed
@GetFramed 12 дней назад
Calling it pro-catholic propaganda is oversimplifying it. It supports Christianity and the idea that if evil exists, the good must exist too. But it definitely is challenging the church in the idea that evil will always live on. Father Karras’s faith prevails over evil, the Power of Christ did not. And the vulgarity is definitely challenging, because that’s the entire point of the film. To retain your faith even when life throws horror at you. The real horror for Karras is his mother dying and the feeling of disconnect between him and his God, but the film visualises those horrors with Pazuzu distorting Regan’s face and voice.
