Welcome! I started this channel LONG ago. The point for me doing so was to get gigs. The old way of demo tapes to get jobs was done. Clubs wanted video. So my wife Rita and I bought a little video camera and she'd come to the shows and shoot them. I'd post the videos on RU-vid and send the links to agencies and clubs. Later on, I started filming home improvements around the house. To my surprise, people were appreciative. The channel became a mix of different things. People go to RU-vid for 1 of 2 reasons, to be entertained or to learn. My niche is the later, so everything I posted was knowledge based. While gigging fulltime in Florida, I decided to do a bass lesson video for beginners. Out of the blue, people from around the world started asking me for bass lessons. Turns out that bass lesson video was getting seen. So now I give lessons and this channel is all music. Rita and I share a DIY channel www.youtube.com/@steveandritasdiy Visit me at: www.stevekonbass.com
This may be the start I need. I occasionally play Bass at church where is it is all contemporary Christian worship music. Lots of the driving “rock” tunes seem to ride the Root. I snuggle with fills when trying to mix it up i stead of just driving quarter or 1/8 notes.
I want to play u-bass. Totaly new to bass playing. Thank you for your common sense approach to teaching. Its all a lot to take in but it will make sense if i continues to study. I will definitely copy your charts whilst i re watch your videos. Thank god i found you on RU-vid. 😊😊😊
Yeah, it seems like a lot when you're a beginner, but after you spend a little time with it you'll realize it's a piece of cake. Keep in mind things need to grow at the same time... understanding, hand coordination, rhythm, and your ear... give them all equal time when you practice. Hope you enjoy the journey.
I’ve been playing bass a good few years and have learnt lots about playing the bass, but this is pure gold! Its the proper fundamentals and and is a great discipline in order to genuinely learn music and your bass. If Steve lived up the road from me I’d be banging on his door for regular lessons.
Glad you like the video. Once you get the gist of basic theory, and then "apply" it... well, that's when the fun starts. I might not live up the road, but I give lessons to people all over the world via Zoom. Thank goodness for modern technology, lol! Info here: www.stevekonbass.com/
Thanks heaps- I’m 54 picked up bass 3 months ago and doing lessons but find a lot of people who play can’t explain the theory at all all clearly. Appreciate it
I've given lessons to players in Australia... thank goodness for technology. Here's a lessons playlist you can use: ru-vid.com/group/PLsFosTB39eVBVllLkZP_RAIjNmviv8nYe
Excelent record you didn't say about your experience but when you use spray at windshield wiper cabin I say wow always is an issue to don't know where is every one doing.
I’m confused because at 20:32 I thought the 7th & 8th measures would still be the Fmajor roots, then the G major chords would start up at the 9th measure. He said it would be 12 bars and with 3 chords i assumed 4 counts of 4 for each chord group. But it doesn’t sound like that. I’ve watched this middle section like 20 times now and I still can’t figure out what I’m missing. Did I miss an instruction about how many times to do the Fmajor notes?
I should've explained the basic 12 bar progression a little better. It would be like this: C I C I C I C I F I F I C I C I G I F I C I G then we can repeat or just end on the C
Thanks I'm looking for a cheap but good bass too start learning and i hope these are good 😭😭🎀 my mum will NOT spend £600 on a bass and all other bass seem to be that price 😂
The Squier bass is priced on the low side and is pretty good for a beginner bass: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jc7fgiRM6TU.html Look into those. If you have a music store by you they might even carry them. It's best to try something in person rather than just buy something on line this way you can get a feel for it. Depending on how old you are and how big your hands are, you might want to try a short scale bass. Here are a few you can check out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l7twVE1iSko.htmlsi=bmaUx8ctUaFFuiTl ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8OltLr9VGRc.htmlsi=kOzVUSbMoh36q7Xi Good luck!
@@stevekonbass YOURRE SO HELPFUL THANKS SMMM 🥺💞💞💞 I decided im gonna try earn extra money to get a gear4music visionstring bass as it just comes with everything but ill deffo watch the videos. Before I make a final decision 😂🩷
What a great lesson - Thanks for taking the time Steve - one part I am missing , could you help and sorry if it’s obvious to some - with the chords eg.,A minor how do you get A C E , G major = G B D . Thanks again 🎸
By taking the root, third, and fifth. So we're playing in C major... C D E F G A B C. The first chord is C major (C-root E-third G-fifth). The second chord is D minor (D-root F-third A-fifth). The third chord is E minor (E-root G-third B-fifth) and so on. The difference in what makes a chord major or minor is the third. A major third would be 4 half steps. A minor third would be 3 half steps.
Try this one... it's basic but a little tricky at the end and meant to help with counting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rF6KfZN-MWM.htmlsi=bz95ry-wWhAdA-do
😮 it’s that simple?? I have been dealing with this for too long! Those doors are pretty heavy and I always worry about them falling on someone! Thank you so much for this!!!
Thanks. Great lesson. I would love to see a follow up lesson taking this a bit further. Usually I can follow this lesson but struggle when I try to count the beats in actual songs where the notes aren't regularly spaced. I end up losing the count. Perhaps some exercises where the note lengths change while we keep the count on some simple bass lines/progressions. I think this is a major stumbling block for me.

It's funny you should say that because I was going to give examples in this lesson on how to count out bass lines to certain songs. I decided against it because I thought it best to keep this one fairly simple. Maybe I'll do a follow up. The trick to counting out basslines is to slow it down until you get it, then speed it up to the tempo of the song.

ok, here is a triplet question: should I start each triplet with the index finger or alternate as it comes: 1 (index)-trip (middle) let (index), 2 (middle) trip (index) let (middle)? I do hear a difference if I start with the index each triplet but it is easier just alternate as it comes. So....?
You are an excellent teacher, i really enjoy your videos, i been watch you for almost a year, i learned a lot about bass. Thank you Keep up the excellent work 👍💯
Great lesson. Internal clock is a great way to put it, so important. Music theory is really important and good to know. I love the visual illustration to complement the audio. Awesome content. Thanks Steve!
Crazy question. I already own the Rumble 500 combo stacked on 2x10 cabinet . There is this guy selling a Fender Bassman 500 watts . At an amazing price !!! I’m really considering. But if I were to use a Fender Bassman head on top of my Rumble 500 combo , with an additional 2x10 cabinet , would it work ??? I like the idea of having better access to the controls . Not sure if this would even work . I guess my goal would be : Plug my bass into the Bassman head , while still using the 500 combo and the additional 2x10 cabinet . I wish this guy that is selling his Bassman would ship it to me first before I buy it . I want to know if it’s even possible to do before I commit .
No, not like you described. You'd have to plug your bass into a direct box with 2 outputs and plug 1 into the Rumble 500 combo and the other into the Bassman head attached to the 2x10 cabinet.
The way I described using the direct box, yes. But you can't plug your bass into the Bassman head and then plug the Bassman head into the Rumble 500 combo because you'll blow up the Rumble 500.
