@@ms.carriage6867 Let's remember King Ghidorah was originally going to be Angillas, and Mothra was going to be Baran/Varan. The trio of Guardian Monsters were envisioned as being smaller and weaker than Godzilla, hence the final designs. Worse, the designer put Varan's face on the heads of King Ghidorah: it just doesn't work. Still, a great film.
Actually, one of the FUNNIEST lines with this movie is on the commentary track for the U.S. version DVD. At the finale, when Shinoda (Takehiro Murata) comments “Perhaps there’s a bit of Godzilla is all of us” and Godzilla starts torching the city, Michael Schlesinger (producer/writer of the Sony English dub), and Darren Paskal have this exchange: Schlesinger: “So many people have asked me: ‘If Godzilla is really protecting us, why is he burning up the city?’ I would say: 'I have no idea: he’s Godzilla.'” Paskal: “Um, I think he’s showing them ‘Don’t mess with me. I need to do what I need to.’” Schlesinger: “Exactly.”
Great commentary! However, you guys forgot to mention that during one of the briefing scenes with the military, Professor Miyasaka (Shirō Sano) is standing and talking, then looks down and realizes his necktie is outside of this buttoned jacket and tucks it in: this is a nod to Dr. Yamane (Takashi Shimura).
Although I don't think Godzilla vs Megaguirus is one of the better Godzilla films I definitely think it did better for things like animation than films like GMK. Also I don't really see the excuse for the showa godzilla films, yet this film doesn't get the same treatment because it's more modern. That doesn't really make sense, there were much better done and more realistic sci fi films during the time the showa godzilla films were released.
Much love for Megaguirus! She holds the title of last new original kaiju for currently 2 decades. I wonder if Toho will ever make a new opponent for Godzilla.
Although I grew up with this film, I feel like it's aged much worse compared to the previous Heisei Godzilla films. Mostly due to the animation and editing of the film which I don't even think looked good at the time. And although the idea of the design is pretty good, I don't like how Godzilla's head looks like a plastic mask, and somehow looks less real than every Heisei Godzilla since the 1984 film. I do think the film does well in trying different things, but I don't really think the story or monster scenes really have anything of substance and aren't well done in many ways.
Yosh! The first Godzilla I saw in theaters. I must of been like in kindergarten or pre kindergarten. It’s one of my earlier memories. I went with my cousins too! Then all the games made this Godzilla the flagship. So a memorable design What I really like about the Japanese cuts is the alien communicating to the cast. The American version cut that out which is the only flaw I can think of for the American version Can’t forget the rob zombie commercial too
If you want some interesting behind the scenes information, the Godzilla jr miniature animatronic and Destoroyah animatronic was stolen and never recovered during production of the film. I don't really know why people don't know more about it since literally the stolen suit is the only thing people talk about in Godzilla vs Mothra 1992.
Honestly, Destroyah Had the look of a final boss but didn’t win any of his fights, to me space Godzilla was a better final boss. He won his first one on one with Godzilla and in the end of that movie Morgera and Godzilla almost lost
I felt that Space Godzilla had so much potential to be devastating to Godzilla but we didn't get that. That installment wasn't that good. That said, I'm hoping that Space Godzilla is picked up by Legendary. I think they'll give him the treatment he needs.
well you have to consider the context. Basically Destoroyah fought Godzilla when his internal power was being released the longer he fought. And even with Godzilla's most powerful attacks Destoroyah was barely affected at the end of it. Basically if any other monster was there they would have been defeated after one or two blasts of Godzilla's atomic breath. This is also the same reason why people think Moguera is weaker than MechaGodzilla despite that not being the case.
@@shauncombs603 yeah hopefully they use them in legendary .yeah space Godzilla and Destroyah were replacements for super Godzilla and Bagan. I can see why they scrapped Bagan his design didn’t really make any sense . Destroyah was supposed to have more ab abilities like a chest beam I think a couple other things .
@@christopherboucher287 Oh man, Super Godzilla. That brings back memories. Even though it was deemed a lackluster game, I loved that SNES game and played it for hours, every day I had rented it. It did have a wonky battle system but it was still quite manageable. Agreed, Bagan's design was quite wild, as was Godzilla's "Super" form.
@@shauncombs603 I personally think SpaceGodzilla was better than a lot of the other Godzilla films such as Godzilla vs Biollante, King ghidorah, and Mothra. Also I would say SpaceGodzilla was a very good enemy for Godzilla in the film and I think he was done very well. Think about it, monsters like Biollante are said to be one of the best, yet the film builds up to their final fight just for Biollante to be destroyed easier than the first time. With Godzilla not even having any physical combat in the film due to Biollante being so weak. So I think SpaceGodzilla was an incredibly creative monster that overpowered Godzilla more than any previous monster.
In fact, there's actually a scene in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II where Aoki (Masahiro) speaks briefly with Chief Hosono (Tadao) alongside Miki. So there's a nice father-and-son moment there!
The last scene with a healthy, grown Godzilla Junior is I think the best ending scene ever. I like to think he's roaring to tell his dad he'll make him proud. That's why for me, Jr is the Godzilla in Final Wars, cause he does make Big G proud.
I’m not a fan of that head canon whatsoever. Rather him be Gemstone Goji especially with all the abilities he most likely gained from absorbing the big G’s energy.
SpaceGodzilla's design was kind of based on a mix between Biollante and Godzilla, as shown in a drawing showing how SpaceGodzilla has carried over things like Biollante's neck and horns on the side of it's face. Although I don't think SpaceGodzilla is a great Godzilla film I definitely think it's better than films like Godzilla 1984, Godzilla vs King ghidorah and Godzilla vs Biollante. I think where this film is great in is it's animation and edits with having monsters in real footage. Making the monsters feel more connected, where films in the showa era or millenium era kind of feel like the model sets take place in different places from the humans. I think the music by itself is great, but I don't think the music matches the film. I think a main problem with the film is pacing. This is mainly obvious in Godzilla's introduction on the beach, and a little bit in the final battle as well. Also if you guy haven't seen the Japanese Bluray version of Godzilla vs Destoroyah I highly recommend it. It literally gives an entirely different tone to the film in terms of visuals. While the other versions of the film try to color correct the footage but instead loose the proper lighting and colors making Godzilla look more like a salmon color, and Destoroyah an oversaturated red. I think I did some clips from the Japanese bluray version a while ago if you are interested in seeing how it looks.
@@GSTE_ I would agree, but with the King Ghidorah vs the Jets sequence, at least it's inter-cut with some good shots of the actual King Ghidorah suit and the jets. With the Space Godzilla vs. MOEGERA sequence, it ALL looks fake. Cheers!
@@d.s.archer5903 I wouldn't say that, the close ups on SpaceGodzilla look as good as the close ups for King Ghidorah. And the only good shots of the jets are stock footage. And the Space sequence at least had some creative battles such as them flying into each other and SpaceGodzilla sending an EMP blast at Moguera mixed with his lasers. Meanwhile King Ghidorah has wings which don't move at all and the same for the heads which makes it look even less convincing. You also have to consider this is only for a short scene similar to the King ghidorah vs the jets scene, it doesn't really take up much of the monster scenes. But an example of having something look bad throughout the film would be Godzilla's water suit in Godzilla vs Biollante. Or just the suits in general. From shot to shot his look completely changes, with them using the main suit, the water suit, and the animatrionic. This makes it very jarring when watching the film.
@@ChillsThrillsPodcast Destoroyah just doesn't click with me; it would have been better off as a solo Godzilla movie instead of turning into a near routine Heisei film with Godzilla fighting another big, bulky opponent that can somehow fly!
Radon is actually the original japanese name, Rodan is the americanized name. So this is basically the only film where the english dub uses his real name.😅
45:40 Godzilla’s destruction of MechaGodzilla is even more spectacular because it is backed up by Ifukube’s immortal Godzilla march theme (1954 composition). This is the first and only time in G vs MG this theme is used - it signals Godzilla’s final victory over MechaGodzilla. A masterstroke by Ifukube!
Some of the old Jackie Chan movies use the same dubbing company. I watched police story (I think is the title) and Jackie’s boss was a g force commander voice actor
56:16 Gigan epitomizes a Dastardly, Evil, and Villainous Kaiju. Not only did Gigan draw Godzilla’s blood, Gigan sadistically pummeled Godzilla when the latter was at death’s door (after being zapped by the Godzilla Tower). Also, let’s not forget that Gigan is a treacherous coward: look at how Gigan tried to run out on King Ghidorah when the battle started to turn in Godzilla and Angilas’ favor.
Godzilla’s entrance when he wades ashore at Hokkaido is his most MAJESTIC, followed by his first appearance in Terror of MechaGodzilla, thanks in great part to the immortal music of Akira Ifukube.
Great job on another insightful review. IMO, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah has the dubious distinction of showcasing some of the BEST special effects in the series, yet conversely a uniquely BAD script. Also, Mr. Shindo, along with Colonel Gondo (Godzilla vs. Biollante), is one of the VERY few stand-out human characters in the Heisei Series. Only the great actor Yoshio Tsuchiya could portray Mr. Shindo with creditability and under-stated power. The scene in which Mr. Shindo commits suicide by confronting Godzilla is a wonderful moment of pathos. Look at the gleam in Tsuchiya's eyes when he refers to Godzilla as his Savior.
Absolutely!! We will finish these all the way up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. We have a poll up on our Facebook page with options of what franchise we should do next if you are interested in voting! Believe voting ends tomorrow Thank you for your support !!
This was an awesome entry in the franchise. Glad you both loved it. As you said the special effects were as good as anything Hollywood was doing at the time. Prescient for what happened with Godzilla Minus One maybe? As ever gentlemen, big love from GB. It was St George’s Day yesterday so my head’s pounding like the constant footsteps of the Big Fella! 🏴😂🍻😂🏴
44:06 A line I like in the American version is when a reporter asks the Japanese Prime Minister “Why can’t we use the Atom Bomb”, to which the Prime Minster snaps: “Because we’re not anxious to destroy Tokyo, that’s why!”
50:45 Kudos to the person at Toho who selected the tracks and matched them to the new footage; it fits the action seamlessly! Especially effective is the use of two Ifukube tracks from the Mitsubishi Pavilion at Expo '70; the mournful “Storm” when Godzilla is laid low by the Godzilla Tower’s laser beams, and the rousing “Volcano” for the opening credits and the final battle. Bravo!
29:46 Actually, in "Monster Zero" Godzilla DOES fire his heat ray at King Ghidorah; several times during the Planet X battle and once during the final battle on Earth. Every time, however, Godzilla's ray has no apparent effect on King Ghidorah.
In Monster Zero yes Godzilla does use his heat ray against Ghidorah but not in this film Godzilla vs. Gigan or in 1964s Ghidorah the three headed monster.
