Getting the most from our effects starts with figuring out what a pedal does. In this channel, we take a look at effects and how we can use them to augment our sound. Each video focuses on a specific pedal, but we're not here to shill. We'll talk about what the effect is doing, how it does it differently from the others, and how we can use that to create our own sound.
I did a studio recording with one of these and ended a take by throwing the feedback knob all the way up and it clipped the DI channel to a flat rectangle and the engineer told me it was the loudest thing he'd ever recorded.
Thanks for taking the time to explain this! I'm wondering why although the target frequencies are pushed 90 degrees out of phase, "the remaining frequencies will be 180 degrees out of phase"? Another question I have; is the resistor and capacitor creating a low pass filter on the positive op amp input?
I recently bought the Stereo. It's really cool, but I wish it had more control over the sweep. It sounds epic with a Big Muff style fuzz before it. I'll probably check out some other flangers like the Boss ones.
Hi, There are 3 pedal suggestions ( I have all 3) I’d like to see/hear, if you have them. First is the Digitech FREQOUT, next, 2 difficult pedals. Meris Enzo and Source Audio C4 Synth. If these aren’t old enough, the best flanger ITW. The DOD Stereo Flanger FX 75B… Thanks… So you’re a Jersey guy! I’m across dariva.🤙🏻
I have this pedal since early 90’s I dusted it off and decided to run it. Quickly reminded why I put it up lol. It’s a cool pedal but it’s biggest flaw is it’s noise and massive tone suck! It completely obliterates the tone when engaged. I’ll keep it because it’s a trash can classic lol
At 8:11-8:24 you made a silly statement about the SD-1 vs BD-2, you marked and compared the LED's resistor and the bypass flip-flop (both found in every BOSS pedal) as "proof" that they are "identical"... and you stated "Shocking! they are virtually identical and it's pretty obvious why if you look at the schematics, look they both got these things and these other things... look, I know a lot about pedals, you can trust me on this..." Well apparently you do NOT know a lot about pedal circuits and we cannot trust you on that!
I always wondered about this pedal. had the DOD FX60 Chorus; it didn't sound like any other chorus. It wasn't all flowery like this, the Boss or the Ibanez. It was clear with a clean slice to it and did something cool to your midrange. Check that one out too.
i remember when it came out. it was in the "General Midi" era , (compatible with generic synth patch list for PC Games) i did like the "Ocean Pad" special FX patch; but it was otherwise just a guitar-to-midi converter with bland Synth.
I just got a CH-1 and really dig it. It's nice to have a mix/level control. The only other choruses I've ever had are the DOD FX65 and the EH Nano Clone, and those lack having those. The DOD can be a bit overbearing as cool as it is, and I didn't like the Nano Clone for reasons I can't recall. Noise, maybe? The CH-1 is almost understated and transparent. It's super crystal clear, too. It's the second one I've had, and this time I'm keeping it. Great video.
I have one. I replaced my Strymon pink box with it. I had a Chandler Digital Stereo Echo in the 90s and regretted selling it, but it was cumbersome. I had used this unit to simulate that Chandler because of all the buttons and knobs it was easy. Following the manual and photos of the layout of the Chandler I get pretty close to what I remember it could do. Very nice unit. I you running it in an effects loop or straight through the front?
I had one for several months, true stereo rig. I was so excited, but just couldn’t connect with it. It reminded me of 80s tech I grew up in the best and most challenging ways. The interface was too arcane for me in that 80s program a vcr way. I sold it and replaced with a TC Electronic 2290P, instant love. ✌️😌🎸 While the Boss 3000 didn’t connect for me, your video did, another nice one! 🙂
Great breakdown, as a recovering electrical engineer I love your neerdy enthusiasm! I've not heard of the Angry Driver, it sounds like a great pedal. Thanks for the video.
New fan here! Have you by any chance heard of the Line6 ToneCore series of pedals? I’d love to hear your thoughts on those if you got your hands on some. I have the Dr. Distorto and the liquaflange from that line and they’re super interesting pedals.
I think you're right, dd will make a comeback, especially the epic, swirly style. It might be used differently, maybe not even in rock music, but it will come back. Great, inspiring video as ever!
Seriously, right? If you took an analog modulated delay, something like a JHS Panther Cub, and ran it in parallel with a second JHS Panther Cub in stereo, I think you might hear something similar in the wash of echoes, but the crisp fidelity of the digital really feels like it brings out something from the depths here.
@@StompboxBreakdown I think you're right about it being time for a digital delay revival. It's crazy how much time and effort has been dedicated to making digital things sound not digital that it's kinda refreshing to hear a clean, crisp delay sound for once!
Great vid! I don’t have one but I actually really like the display. Are you aware that when Boss decided to miniaturise the SDE3000, the DD2 was born? They put the same chip from the 3000 into the DD2. It only just fitted across the board and the circuitry to accommodate it is a bit crazy. I’ve kept mine on a board for nearly 20 years, gigged and toured to this very day.
Oh wow, did not know that. Thats absolutely crazy, some of those early digital pedals really were just rack gear folded up and stuffed into a pedal. What an era.
Hey dude! If you get into the dd20 sometime I would so so so appreciate a chance to talk about it on the phone or Webex thing- or get a guest correspondent spot on the video just because I am a power user of that pedal and love it to death. I wish more understood it's awesomeness but also wish it to be my secret.. it's a tough spot to be in lol. But if you explore it in a video I'm confident I could shed some light on a few features or quirks.. what a legendary pedal, had to shout it out since you mentioned in in this video.
That's a cool idea, thanks for the offer! I've written up (goes and counts) 3 scripts for a DD-20 video so far. As you know, it's such a powerful pedal, and so thoughtfully designed, and my problem is fitting it all into a 10-12 minute video because there's just so much. I could fill my time JUST talking about the ways the preset switching can be set up. Or the looper. Or getting an SDE-3000 sound out of the modulated delay setting. It's a beast. Every time I'm like "Ok, it's time to cover the DD-20 because people still aren't getting that this is probably all anyone needs", I wind up with way too many pages and it becomes an out-of-control project. But maybe one of these days.
I LOVE my Oceans 11. The spring reverb alone is worth the price of the pedal to me, it's one of the best sounding spring settings I've heard. It sounds better than an old Japanese amp I have with a Belden brick. Pairing it with a Canyon delay pedal increases the fun exponentially. There are just so many options on both, and every one is a great sound, even if a few are very niche sounds.
@@StompboxBreakdown oh yeah, they both do 😁 If you haven't run an Oceans and a Canyon together you really should. I put the Canyon first, with a long tripped out delay, then set the Oceans to one of the more drawn out and effeced sounds..... notes ring for days!
From what the internet says, it *should* work, but it's also recommended you spend some time adjusting the individual string sensitivity, and maybe spend more time aligning the pickup with the strings (physically) than I did. But it should work, it's a 13-pin pickup sending the same data in the same format.
