Hi everyone, I'm Anne from Martin House Flowers in Northern Illinois and I garden in zone 5B. I've recently retired from a 40 year career and I'm looking forward to spending as much time in my new garden, taking a blank canvas and transforming it into an oasis filled with trees, shrubs and perennials. You'll quickly find out that I have an addiction to hydrangeas and roses. I relocated from Ontario, Canada 8 years ago and had to adjust my gardening experience to this new area. I was never successful at growing roses because of our harsh winters, but I'm giving it another shot with some of the new David Austin and Heirloom Rose varieties I've discovered through RU-vid. So I hope you join me as I go through my journey of gardening and growing cut flowers.
Hi Anne, I personally enjoy all of your videos. It’s nice to have a mix of garden tours, planting, & chit chat too. I can really connect to what you talked about! You are right, we all have our own stories. I have been saddened too in watching some recent videos regarding people’s personal pain. It takes so much courage to share those things. But how wonderful to have a community that is so loving, caring, and supportive. Also, I’m cheering you on for going to market next year! Keep moving forward, you have so much to share. Thank you for your friendship and support. 🍃🌼
Hi Jen, I appreciate your friendship & encouragement so much! It's really too bad we don't live closer so we could get together and enjoy each other's gardens & go plant shopping together! I used to feel a little lonely with my "gardening obsession", until I discovered RU-vid and found out that there are so many others that share the same obsession!! Thank you for continuing to comment and watch my videos! Who knows what next season will bring, but here's hoping I can sell some flowers. Thanks again for all your wonderful support! 🙏💚☺
Yay! Time to decorate for Autumn! Regarding your Kiss Me Kate rose, you may want to make the stems grow horizontally so that lateral branching can happen. That’s how you get lots of blooms along the canes. Good luck 🌹
Hi Anne! What a beautiful video & such a lovely day you had. Double rainbow and all! 🌈I liked the taller tiered tray too for the front porch. It pulled the white from your pillows and wreath on the front door. I also thought it could probably be seen better from the street too. You have such a great sense of style. Loved the arrangement with the teddy bear sunflowers. You have such an incredible cut flower/vegetable garden. Inspires me to want to do more next year! Thanks for another shout out. It’s so nice to be able to support one another in that way. Enjoy your weekend! 🍂
@@PrettyLittleGarden2930 it was a fun day! Thank you for all the kind compliments 🩷🌻 I couldn’t help think about your baby robins 🪺 as I filmed my scratched up door! Happy to support you & your channel, it’s so awesome to have found a fellow YT friend! 💚
The repetition of the lavender on both sides of the walkway will be so pretty. Love the yellow coneflowers. Barb is absolutely the best! Looks gorgeous!
The roses are just beautiful! I never have good luck with them. Usually the Japanese beetles destroy them. I'll bet it seems lovely sitting on your porch!
I loved watching your garden timeline. What a beautiful transformation in such a short time! I am so in love with your greenhouse. I had to laugh when you mentioned getting rid of your daylilies. I am ready to pull out many of mine too. Although they rebloom, they just look messy by August, and take so much work. I'm loving the lavender idea. I will be watching next spring to see how they do if you decide to go with that, and may try it too. I did replace some of my Stella d'oro's in my driveway garden with Tuscan Gold false sunflower. Because they are in part shade, they stay on the shorter side (about the same size as the daylilies). And they bloomed all summer. That might be an option towards the back. Can't wait to see what you decide. Thanks for sharing your gardens!
Hi Debbie, thank you for all your suggestions for my day lily replacements!💚 I will be working on this over the weekend and will be posting the video soon! 👩🏻🌾
I love the before and after what a beautiful job!thank u for sharing. I like the idea of doing gravel in the paths to match the other areas with gravel.🌻
Thank you Pam for watching and happy you enjoyed this! We are leaning towards using gravel in that area between the tall raised bed and the lower raised bed area, since it's more permanent than mulch which breaks down and weeds eventually grow through. I appreciate your comment! 💚
Awesome wreath! I have large and small limelights and love drying bouquets.thanks for the inspiration to make a wreath! On the lights, I've been wanting to add solar lights to my patio arbor with roses and clematis but not sure how they'll work out in the winter...? Will you keep yours in place?
@@pamd1861 Hi Pam, I’ve had my arbor at my side yard with the HoseLink solar lights for almost 2 years, they stay up through winter with no issues! I thought about trying cheaper ones from Amazon for the new arbors, but decided to go with the original brand since they have been very reliable. I’m happy you’re inspired to make a wreath!
Your husband worked hard on that garden path and it shows. It looks wonderful. I hate for summer to end because I have enjoyed watching your property be transformed into a thing of beauty.
@@carolyn8033 thank you so much, it’s been so satisfying doing all our projects in the garden. I do feel a little sad thinking about summer coming to an end, but it gives us all a chance to recharge and make plans for next spring/summer.
Hello there! Your channel just popped up and I clicked on it. I’m so glad I did! Your garden is absolutely beautiful!!😍 You taught well on how to make a wreath from hydrangeas and also about the solar lights. Two projects I’ve been wanting to learn how to do. I shall be returning to your channel! 💚💚💚💚
I haven’t bought mulch the last two years, it’s crazy that the price is the same as gravel now! You may want to check with your local tree service companies to see if they are willing to drop mulch off at your house for free, it’s worth looking into.
@@angelaengler2387 we looked into chip drop, but the issue is that you don’t know how much they will drop off. We like the bags so that we can take our time spreading it, without the pressure of having a giant load in the driveway. In the spring we got a pallet when it was on sale for $2/bag at our local hardware store. So it’s crazy that they increased the price!
@@gailsgarden the black obelisks I’ve had for many years, I moved with them from Canada. The tall bronze one in the corner by the greenhouse is from Amazon. a.co/d/7WoTRrs
@@theswissgardenvlog3189 Thanks for watching! We have a video coming up soon on the journey of building our greenhouse. It’s a BC Greenhouse, they provided a detailed instruction book and RU-vid videos are available for each step along the way.
Beautiful bouquet arranged by a very talented girl! Congratulations to Greg for the finished greenhouse and Anne, all of your hard work and talent for beauty in the garden is exceptional. Love your videos!
Beautiful greenehouse! I'm always thinking of replacing my daylilies, too; they are too messy looking starting in July and I don't have time for the maintenance they require. We managed to give a few away last summer.
@@therestlessgardener9287 thank you for watching! Those “builder day lilies” are always at the back of my mind to replace! I’m noticing in their 3rd season that they are getting dried out sooner than previous years. I’m also getting frustrated with how they’re looking in August. Good idea to give them away, but it may be tough, since they’re so abundant in my town!
I may have missed it but where did you purchase your greenhouse. It's lovely and will look amazing when you put your final touches on it. I grew up in Sycamore but now live in Holland MI. Kudos to Janey for introducing you to me!
@@petefredrick3784 it’s a BC Greenhouse shipped all the way from Surrey, B.C. 🇨🇦, we sourced the stone foundation ourselves. Stay tuned for the next video showing the journey of building the greenhouse from start to it finally completed and furnished. That’s so cool that you’re from here. Thank you for watching!
According to the seed package, they are a tender perennial. Tubers may be overwintered in frost-free conditions and replanted following year. The seeds are Dahlia Mignon Single Mix from Bakers Creek.
