Still it is all about chasing the craft of home distillation and making it a legitimate hobby.
We discuss things like how to get into the hobby, recipes, techniques, safety procedures and controversial topics. Its not about any specific spirit. Vodka, whisky, whiskey, scotch, bourbon, gin, liqueur, rum and absinth I want to talk about it all. As long as its made with the intention of creating a high quality craft product.
Science and geekery is definitely not off limits. In fact I think its something to be celebrated and embraced. So lets get stuck in and see where it can help the world of distilling!
Most importantly Still It is about creating a platform to discuss ideas. Embracing a balance between open-minded optimism and skepticism. A place that celebrates new ideas but evaluates them based on fact and research.
If he could make the banned by the Church of Rome and every leader in Europe in the 1500s now that would be grand but pretty sure those type of mushrooms are not legal in NZ lol but mead made with a certain kind of mushroom was banned by the church of Rome and every King and Queen at least Christian ones at the time, the middle 1500s.
The wormwood is what makes it psychoactive the more of wormwood the more bitter and also more effects one has. That said do not drink high meaning 4-6 ounces of wormwood Absinthe Longterm it does way more than ethanol due to its actives binding to the CB1 and CB2 receptors in irony but long term can lead to brain issues including cancer not gloom and doom lies truth from a herbalist that makes this stuff, the real stuff is not sold on shelves but the means to make the real stuff is sold in kits or just do what Jessy did here it appears he knew ahead of time to keep the wormwood content low to avoid swimming underwater effect it induces, much like jelly legs except all feels and you yourself feel like your underwater smooth and pretty cool, that is this actives of wormwood binding to your receptor sites. This is also the effect that got many artists and commoner alike extra addicted or habit-forming whichever word we can use for wormwoods action but at least your entire body will be ringworm land free, wormwood was discovered to be "special" due to ringworms and how adding wormwood to everything made them vanish, so it caught on until Alchemists and herbalist created Absinthe woolaa lol
As someone who drinks nothing but Mountain Dew (even when working in a hot factory....I drink like a 6 pack of bottles just at work).....I absolutely love this idea. Mountain Dew is the Nectar of the Gods and is so amazing you can literally live of off it (not to mention that it's the most delicious thing ever).
Love some quality Absinthe. It's unfortunate about all the misunderstanding around it and the marketing teams that shill Crapsinthe as some magic potion. Adult candy is a perfect way to describe it too, especially with a sweetener. Real maple syrup is my personal fav ATM.
67% is in line with bottled Absinthe. But, I feel like you are adding to much water. I would go with 3:1. I also didn't see you add any sugar. That will help smooth out those flavors. The thing is, it's a strong drink. It will get you drunk fast. Using cold water should improve the louche. Great job!
"Other herbs that contain thujone have no restrictions. For example, sage and sage oil (which can be up to 50% thujone) are on the Food and Drug Administration's list of generally recognized as safe (GRAS) substances.[35]" Wikipedia Thujone
I had a spirit many years ago that had a very similar intoxication. I'm pretty sure it was called Raki, or something similar, and i think it may have been Turkish
There are anecdtes that absinthe was used for abortions, and my ex once got her period two weeks early after a good binge of absinthe. So there may something to this effect.
As Swedish person a lot of us like Bäsk (Bitter), basically vodka with loads of Wormwood, maybe a spoon of honey in... The Wormwood makes my thinking hyper focused and I can go on forever...
It's not the recipe that made the hallucinations. It was the barrels it was aged in. They were wormwood barrels that happened to have a fungas growing in the wood. It was that fungas that gave the hallucinations. I wrote a paper on it when I was in college.
A bunch of us got smashed on Absinthe after work one Friday years ago. Later that evening, on the way home, a colleague thought he could beat a motorbike away from traffic lights outside a police station. Probably a good job he forget to get a bike for himself. Decent attempt, though.
I brew with kviek all the time. It’s my Go To yeast for many beer styles. Today I’m planning a whiskey wash and thought, hmmmm, I wonder. So I’m going to give it a whirl!
Thujone, the active compound in wormwood, has the ability to block Gaba receptors. I'm assuming this gives the feeling of sobriety and takes away any anxiety or panic like a benzodiazepine would.
to see if its real absynth from XVIII century youd need to check how much thujone it has. thats what you trip your balls with when you get poisoned by it. my guess is youve made a legal version of absinth
Old Absinthe House in New Orleans where Toulouse Lautrec used to vist they put some ice in a glass put a suger cube on top the glass and poured the Absinthe over the suger cube melting the sugar cube into the glass. I drank one drink but it wasn't my cup of tea. I washed it down with a shot Crown Royal.
I might just be a naïve fool, but I found it really funny when you started tasting the shifts between botanicals and all I could think of is "Anise? Licorice. Fennel? Licorice. Licorice Root? Duh, Licorice." Unfortunately for me, I don't like licorice too much so I was a bit confused with what seemed like redundant flavors.
Saving early tails for a future run works well for many things tbh. Good for rum especially. The secret is, it takes a few runs of saving and re-adding those early tails before it really gets good. Knowing that will inform what you put on oak and what you just cut and drink mixed.
Great vid dawg. I especially appreciate the inspiration gained to use my water distiller for distilling booze for smaller runs. I thought about trying it but never did. In regard to the Absinth, its an epic party drink when everyone is partaking. Its something else.
