Video clips of Taira Masaji Hanshi of the Okinawa Goju Ryu Kenkyukai teaching and demonstrating his unique analysis of the application of Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate Kata.
We are making these available to highlight the true innovation that Taira Sensei brings to Goju Ryu karate. Take the opportunity to look at the videos, and when the chance comes to train with him at a seminar near you, take it. Accept no substitutes or imitators, this is the source.
Makiwara is better for developing a snappy punch than a heavy bag. You can fool yourself into thinking you are hitting the heavy bag hard with a push punch. But the feedback is different with a Makiwara.
Dear karatecs, all this fuss with twisting arms and throws loses its meaning if the opponent is physically superior (weight, height, strength,). The proposed movements are mostly far-fetched, requiring superiority of physical parameters over the enemy and perfect balance. I understand that this is a feature of the style, but I would like to see the effectiveness and victory of the weak over the strong due to technique.
the point is to remove the arms out of the equation. that's what he's doing. they don't do sport competition, nor are they interested. this okinawan karate is meant for self defense kid. go watch muay thai or something instead, you obviously don't understand what's going on in this style.
@@quickstep2408 A straight stance, little moving legs, primitive wrestling in a stance, no wrestling on the floor, sweeping arm movements - I understand this style well, its pros and cons.

I trained with Taira Sensei back during his Scottdale, Az visit. Taira Sensei came from the Jundokan were Higaonna Sensei and Chinen Sensei trained during the 1950's until the 1970's. There is no doubt about it. Taira Sensei bunkai is well thought out and practiced to the point of reacting to the attacks with speed and power. My best to all those that train with the same kind of spirit.
It has nothing to do with that, everything you see comes from kata and Goju ryu basic exercises...specialy with krav maga which is a mix of diferent arts and a younger art than karate.
Brother that was a good comment about it looking like wing chun. That is because 99% of karate has lost the original concepts that this instructor is teaching. I promise you, he did not steal this from anywhere.
Yes, it is. With the same 70% unnessecary overdrilling of Hubud Lubud as in FMA or JKD/WC Trapping. But the transitions to the balance breaks and body pushes are more often used. Which is good i.m.o.. Thanks for the long video. Trapping still is a distance that transitions to fast into grappling to get this much attention.
Thank you very much for sharing this video. Having recently attended his seminar in the UK, it is nice to have a reminder of the drills we covered. Many thanks once again.
Taira sensei and Taba sensei working the continuous application (renzoku bunkai) drill for Gekisai Dai Ni kata. Taba sensei is reacting rather than performing a practiced routine as uke.
I like Taira Bunkai. He just to often goes in front, when it would not be necessary. Probably for sake of the drills and to train a dangerous position. The doji uke/kosa uke interpretation above is more Seiyunchin then Saifa in my feeling. In Saifa you pass in front of him from one side to the other. Hence the headmovements in the kata - you keep looking at your opponent. The (maybe) armcrossing "uraken" and the shiko-drop-pull are covering this sidechange and are keeping the enemy "busy" and in place during it.
