100% agree with your point here. In fact I've always struggled with lateral raises because it's just so damn hard to get "mind muscle" connection. Even though I've been doing cable lateral raises for over a year, it wasn't until the last few weeks that I finally realized I need to make even more adjustments to target my side delts better. I changed the position of the cable to behind-the-back and then I tweaked the initial stretch of the cable by how far from the cable I stand and in addition to that I finetuned the height of the cable and how I raise my delts and to what angle. I think after all that and really blasting to failure in a way I never have before I finally (literally after decades of training, I'm 48 years old) have made my side delts somewhat sore. Hard to tell how that is going to correlate with hypertrophy but it's probably better than wasting my time doing what I was doing before for so long and not getting results. The side delts in particular perhaps because they are so small and there is so much mobility (unlike biceps which really can only move in one way), it's just super hard to target them effectively. If you can figure out side delts (and lats!), you can figure out everything else haha.

Would pull ups be a good exercise for the upper back?
@solitr1
@solitr1 14 часов назад
As long as you can do full reps, all of your back muscles will work, but a row variation will surely be better for upper back growth.
@OctagonalSquare
@OctagonalSquare 22 часа назад
Could also curl at your shoulder too. The bicep goes across the shoulder joint as well. You do your normal curl then move your arm forward. Gets a fuller range of motion on the upper head of the muscle
@angel2o
@angel2o 23 часа назад
i guess this only applies if you want just bigger upper pecs , but if you want to target the rest of the chest is better the big chest thing to strech more.Using this with flies may be beneficial
@jamesheshiki

So high rows are inferior for lats than pull downs? I thought they are superior because in pull downs the lats have no leverage at overhead position 🫤
@oliverconnaughton
@oliverconnaughton 23 часа назад
If you're doing a narrower grip then they're both the same since you'd be performing shoulder extension either way
@michaellima6272

Hey Ben, do you have any ideas on how to get a similar set up for those of us without a machine like this? Most gyms have regular cable stations that don't have a moving arm like the one shown here.
@MonarchLMC
@MonarchLMC День назад
You could use a bench or the machine itself as long as the distance is far enough from the cable origin point and not interfering with your arm
@michaellima6272
@michaellima6272 23 часа назад
@@MonarchLMC can’t use the machine itself unfortunately. As for using a bench I can’t picture a set up that doesn’t involve the bench being in the way. I need to visually see a viable alternative set up, if anyone has one.
@EvanZamir

Pro tip: You can bring your own attachments to the gym. For example your gym might not have a neutral mag grip that would help target your lats better. Buy that grip and bring it to the gym!

You know it’s funny I always felt late pull downs in my arms no matter what I did for grip or technique but the second I switched to pull ups I could feel my back give out first and started to add size to my lats and back. My back was so under developed that I could actually see it grow and become stronger over time with only pull ups twice a week.
@solitr1
@solitr1 14 часов назад
It’s very interesting you say that. I’ve always been a pulldown guy because I thought pulldowns are basically pull-ups that are more stable, but I did pull-ups today and immediately went to pulldowns. I felt my lats give up before my arms. Don’t get me wrong, I have a very good back, but not once to this day did I feel my back muscles give up first compared to my arms. I will definitely be doing more pull-ups.
@EnthusiasticGoat
@EnthusiasticGoat 14 часов назад
@@solitr1 I recommend giving wide pull ups with a false grip might be good for you, it lets me zero in on my lats and back. But just don’t cut the range of motion like a lot of people do, I like to arch my back and touch the bar with my chest and the stretch is unreal. Just a thought 😊

I built my lats with yates rows exclusively. This did more for my lats than many months of chin ups. But it could just be due to my leverages. I'm 6'4" and with long arms so I'm at a major disadvantage on pull ups because it works my forearms more than my lats. On a yates row, I feel my lats really well and the proof is in the progress I am making on this exercise. With no cheat, I am able to make progress really quickly and I have not been a beginner in a long time. Exercises where you have a leverages advantage are generally going to be better. I also have long legs so the squat was always a nightmare for me but I discovered leg press is easier and lunges also are more practical for my build.

I agree regarding the leaning-back aspect. But to play devil's advocate on the arm-path point - with a wide pronated grip, the scapula upward/downward rotation motion is much easier to focus on. And it's that downward rotation of the scapula during the concentric that is even more important than the arm path, for the lats
@The_Modern_Meathead
@The_Modern_Meathead День назад
i agree in that the scapulothoracic joint motion is more relevant from a lat perspective, but a true "frontal plane motion" will inevitably lead toward a more horizontal direction because of the constraints of the shoulder girdle/holding retraction as you pull works against the goal. i think anywhere in front of the frontal plane + more vertical resistance is great.
@Pablo-ns5zk

Pelvic retroversion is important to stretch the lumbopelvic fibers. To what height do you recommend going down to shorten the lats and not activate the lower fibers pecs?
