Nicely edited video. As others have mentioned, you missed some of the more spectacular spots, especially in the northwest portion of the UP. Linguistic tip from a lifelong Yooper: "Pasty" rhymes with "nasty", not "hasty". And a true Yooper would NEVER ruin a pasty with gravy. Ketchup, or nothing. The classic combo is a pasty (with sides of coleslaw and a dill pickle), and a 6-pack. It's called a "Yooper 7-course meal". As a kid growing up in the UP, the pasty is an all-purpose food. Boy scout or youth group outing? Mom throws a pasty in a bag with some cookies and a bottle or two of water and you're fed for a day. Kids eat them at ambient temperature, meaning even in winter we eat them. The Big Two Hearted River is lovely, and of course Hemingway wrote a short story using that name as its title. But a bit west and south you'll find the Fox River, which flows south (Big Two Hearted flows north). It passes under M-28 at Seney. In the early part of the season when the water is high you can canoe it all the way to Manistique. Locals know that Hemingway actually fished in the Fox River, not the Big Two Hearted. He used the Big Two Hearted in his short story title because it's more poetic sounding, but also because he didn't want people finding out his fishing spots. As you learned, "L'anse" rhymes with "schwantz", not "chance". It has French Canadian roots. Though the largest ethnic group in the UP generally is Finnish, there is a sizeable French Canook presence in the UP. My neighborhood had a lot of Finn names like Aartilla, Maki, Sampala, Lahti, Rintomaki, Rajala, Lahtinen, Pelto, Aho, etc., but we also had French Canadian names like L'Hillier, Lancour, DesJardins, etc.
This was a really enjoyable trip with great production quality. You are good at this. Question: what do you do with your diesel heater at night when it’s raining?
Good question which I've never had to answer. It's all contained in a weatherproof case so I assume it'd be fine and I'd probably never use it above freezing.
Wow, VERY nicely done video. Sorry you were sick for part of it. Even though I live here, I still enjoy watching other people's videos and sometimes find new places to explore. :)
Great video. I live in Michigan and we just got back a few weeks ago from the porcupine mountains in the upper peninsula. How did you find the two tracks you were riding on. I never know if the trails I see are private roads or open to the public.
Thanks Ernie. I use the Gaia GPS app for finding trails and it has a layer that shows public/private land. Might need the paid version for that, worth it for me.
Thats quite the set up you have going with your jeep! Great videos of the area that you took to adventure in! Next time, you need to stop and see the Tahquamenon (Tah-kwah-meh-non) Falls! An absolute must see when exploring the U.P.! They are between Newberry and Paradise. There is an Upper and Lower falls and there is a place to camp there as well! With a nice Brewery/eatery with excellent food! There were also some pretty cool Falls in Munising as well. The Horse Shoe Falls are pretty neat! Lots to expore up here in what we call "God's country"!😊
@@jimbresnahan well, whenever next time is, if you drop a comment here before you come, if I am still working in the same place, you can drop in and say "Hi!" And get some groceries!😊
Lowkey, about a half hour/hour-ish from taquamenon is an area called "The Widewaters"...connected to shelldrake lake. Looked like a cool place to explore and was going to taquamenon in the morning. Honestly wow. Complete seclusion and serenity with NO one for miles right on the water. Bunch of 2 tracks off of vermilion road. It's kinda been my secret area for the last couple years
Hit me up next time you go back to L’anse. I’ll hook you up with Wally, who’s lived there his entire life, and will take you places that very few people know exist. The logging trails are my favorite.
It’s not a Pas-tie like a stripper wears on their nipple. It’s pronounced pas-ty. And my mother was born in L’anse. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
Great video! We live in Midland Mi not too far from your first stop in Pinconning but we get up to the UP a few times every year! Watching this got me excited for our next trip to Copper Harbor coming up in September for the Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat (KOAR)! I also had family that lived in the upper Keweenaw Peninsula most of my life so I have been fortunate to spend a lot of time up there.
I like the mouth of the 2-Hearted River. Its waaaaay back in off the paved road and went thru a pretty substantial forest fire years back but man, once you get there, its pretty epic.
Truth…I’m mindful of this esp as I’m not skilled to do most trail repairs. Safer in a group, but so many are adventuring solo whether canoe, backpack, or vehicle and knowing your limits becomes extra important.
@@jimbresnahan No lol i would say it the same way if i didn’t live here. (BEAR-IH-GAH) baraga, (LAWN-SE) L’Anse (PASS-TEE) Pasty (MEW-NI-SING) Munising. Other than that great video! You know what they say, come stay for a few days spend money, but please don’t stay haha we like our secluded piece of heaven. I live in Escanaba about an hour south of Marquette.
Best White Fish Dinner I ever had was in Grand Marais Michigan. The little bar there in town has the best Ice Cold Beer/Soft Drinks, and fresh white fish. I love it up there.
Fantastic video sir. I just did a trip around Lake Michigan with two other families, and we all brought our kids. 5 kids under the age of 4 and 6 adults. Trip of a lifetime. Question, what camera are you using to film. Your videos are fantastic. Keep up the good work!
We park are campers at the mouth for going out qnd stayin on weekends!!! Not like everyone leaves em there but as locals thats one of are main relaxing places for friends family qnd kids!!! Ten mins from home!!
I really enjoyed your video, I was up In Munsing in 2014 exploring the waterfalls. I plan on a return visit this fall with my jeep and Smittybilt trailer. Also glad you took some down time to heal From whatever bug you got
Wow, what a great video of your adventure to the UP of MI!!! I live in the lower Northwest MI and tend to take the area for granted. Thank you for sharing your trip!
Well, I've lived in MI all my life, been all over the lower and upper parts, saw many beautiful spots, and I have to say for an outsider you did a great job showing her off 😊God bless
