Hi, and welcome to my channel, this channel will focus on the hills within the English Lake District. However I have other interests and they will no doubt feature here! . I'm a mid 60's retiree, living in Cumbria in the UK. So welcome along for the ride...drive, or indeed hike!
@@mt1254 Glad you liked it Bob, I've got to be in the mood to use the drone... it's a bit of a faff if I'm not!😂 Trust you and yours are well, thanks for watching and commenting it's much appreciated ATB Alistair 👍
Hi Alistair. Cracking video mate, so interesting. Amazing that all these places are still here to explore. A brilliant little history lesson, thanks so much for taking us around. All the best mate 😀
@@DAoutdoors I love it over there Dave, I've walked over all the hills... you don't see a soul...and it's good for the soul! Thanks for watching and commenting,ATB Alistair 👍
@@atrampinthehills.841 I love it too Steve, did you camp kind of behind the garage down in the bottom? That's a bit of a rum spot! Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers Alistair 👍
@@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad we camped a few times outside of alston on the A 689 road...it was on the left...can't remember the name...good times though
@@grahamtowler1761 Hi Graham, yes a short life expectancy for sure ☹️. I find them fascinating places, the endeavour and determination to win a living under such conditions has always interested me. Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers Alistair 👍
Really enjoyed that Alastair. I know it’s something a bit different but I love it. Really like the new scooter - I’d love one of those 😁👌♥️ So sad to see the building left to rack and ruin in that last mine that closed, as they look of a good old age and it’s only been closed 25 years.
@@PhilipOlsen11 Glad you enjoyed it Phil, most of the old workings at these two mining areas are protected now. The scooter replaced my KTM 1190 Adventure which was a bit of a handful to move about now that my mobility isn't quite what it was. I'm enjoying the scooter immensely 90mpg, easy 75mph cruising and 45lit storage under the seat👌 + Honda reliability and build quality👌 Thanks for watching and commenting, it's always much appreciated ATB Alistair 👍
@@PhilipOlsen11 Next video will see further diversity Phil! Something different again but a major part of me and my interests! Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers Alistair 👍
@@grahamtowler1761 it's one of those places where you can't fail to be moved when you visit... certainly on a first visit. Thanks for watching Graham, ATB Alistair 👍
Hi Alistair. Overly little video mate, and really interesting, these rocks in the middle of fields have so many stories to tell haven’t they. I’m out in the mountains again tomorrow. All the best 😀🥾⛰
@@DAoutdoors They certainly have Dave, Roman, Iron/Bronze Age and Neolithic history has become a growing interest for me. You should have a good day tomorrow... the forecast is good 👍 Sadly I have a car in for MOT! Thanks for watching, cheers Alistair 👍
That was great Alastair. What a lovely little castle. The make of the castle sounds Welsh - Pen (meaning top of a hill or mountain). So Dragons castle at the top of the hill. Just a thought 🤷🏻♂️
@@PhilipOlsen11 that's interesting Phil, I never thought of it like that. It's certainly pretty old , legend has it that Uther Pendragon (King Arthur's father had it built) Sir Hugh de Morville owned it in 1170 . He was one of the men who murdered Thomas Beckett. Cheers Alistair 👍
@@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad very interesting. Legend has it that Arthur was a Celtic king from either wales or Cornwall. Nice to let the mind wander 😁
@@PhilipOlsen11 my mind certainly wanders when I visit such places.... which is why I forgot to get the mics set up and to include some of the info!! Have a great day Phil 👍
@@DAoutdoors I'm sure they do, prior to Lady Anne owning Pendragon it was owned by Sir Hugh de Morville... one of the men who killed Thomas Beckett! Thanks for watching Dave, cheers Alistair 👍
@@GENerationXplorers I'd like to go back with the drone and get some aerial views of the settlement at some time... when it's a bit calmer! Thanks for watching and commenting ATB Alistair 👍
Wiki showed me an air view of Castle Folds. That is really one massive and impressive construction 🎉. Thanks for taking us there. One thing though I would be interested in, where was/is the next water source?
@@medievalladybird394 it's a good question and an interesting one. Today the closest water source is actually a weak spring inside the stone circle... about 1 mile as the crow flies! The geology is of course limestone, here in Westmorland there are numerous "dewponds" perhaps they collected water using similar methods...of course we also get more than our fair share of rain! Thanks for watching and commenting, ATB Alistair 👍
@@PhilipOlsen11 Hi Phil, I find some of these places strangely inspiring. It was so windy!... I didn't dare to use the drone up over the settlement ☹️ Glad you enjoyed it, cheers Alistair 👍
@@DAoutdoors yeah very wild, I wanted to get the drone up over the settlement but I wouldn't have seen it again 😂 I really like that area, I've spent a lot of time in the "Westmorland Dales" over the years. Thanks for watching Dave it's much appreciated cheers Alistair 👍
Some very interesting monuments there Alistair, great explanations. These are rocks I would have just walked past without a second glance, it’s nice to know that there placings have a much more significant meaning. Great Bronze Age burial find. Must have been a busy spot back in the day. The aerial shots really give perspective!
@@GENerationXplorers Thanks very much, I've walked (and cycled) past these stones and cairns myself many times and only recently looked into the history of them. Thanks for watching and commenting as always cheers Alistair 👍
Very interesting Alistair. I remember the Cockpit when I walked to Loadpot Hill a couple of years back. Askham is a really nice place too. Hope you are well. Best wishes, Chris
@@PhilipOlsen11 Something a bit different Phil, there's more to me than hills!😂 I'm planning to diversify the channel a bit. Very pleased you liked it, thanks for watching and commenting cheers Alistair 👍
@@PhilipOlsen11 It's hard to know what to do sometimes, I'm sure that a lot of subs came for the Lakes hills but truthfully I've climbed them so many times my motivation is very often low! Thanks again ATB Alistair
@@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad totally agree Alastair. RU-vid can be a real pain. I’ve done so many things that I’ve got my head in a spin 🙈 I’ve started a like channel that I’ve uploaded the videos that are my main focus. I’ve think the algorithm has gone bonkers 🤪
This was interesting. I love "standing stones", so I went straight ahead to see if I can buy the book here in Germany as a present for one of my brothers. I can and the price is nothing to complain about. Thank you btw for pronouncing 'moore' like I do instead of like 'more'. Must be remnants of my Cumbrian self. 😅 This 'avenue' is not in line with Castlerigg though, or is it? Take care and keep walking, Elvira
@@medievalladybird394 Hi Elvira, many of the Neolithic avenues are on a Northwest/Southeast alignment, perhaps linked to the Winter solstice sunrise?🤔 Castlerigg isn't in view from Moor Divock...but Shap Avenue is! I have a video planned for that at some point. Thanks so much for watching and commenting it's very much appreciated ATB Alistair 👍
@@grahamtowler1761 Hi Graham, we've had to pick and choose our days out this Summer... I can't remember such a poor run of weather. Thanks for watching, ATB Alistair 👍

Really enjoyed the aerials and your walk around Askham fell, interesting to see some of the neolithic monuments and those views of the hills are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Alistair. Great to see you back out again in the hills. What a lovely looking walk, with some amazing views. I bet it can be a bleak old fell in the winter months, or June, July & August as they are now know! Haha All the best mate Dave
@@DAoutdoors 😂😂 We've not had much of a Summer have we! It's a quiet hill generally, a good hill for the Summer holidays!! Thanks for watching,ATB Alistair 👍

@@andrewbarr5227 good to meet you both as well. Hope you had a great day. Thanks for watching the videos... I'll be out filming again soon. ATB Alistair 👍
First Alistair, thank you for the lovely mention. Excellent to see you out and about in the Dales and your take on Fountains Fell. I've had a few close shaves with left behind cameras and tripods. I've been lucky on a couple of occasions, in busy places, that I've got them back. Great film. Best wishes, Chris
Don’t think I’ve ever been up Fountains Fell Alistair, thank you for showing us. So close to the three peaks and yet you had the place to yourself. That was awkward gate of the week! Leaving a tripod, I’ve done that before! Can imagine it in its hey mining day. You can see how windy it is and the audio is great. Ah it’s Fountains Abbey Land, great reason! Great to see you back out 👍
@@GENerationXplorers It's a lovely quiet hill, even with the Pennine Way crossing over close to the summit. Thanks for watching and commenting, ATB Alistair 👍
@@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad looks stunning Alistair. We are undecided about a quiet hike in Wensleydale or combining some of the busy Yorkshire Peaks. This looked very tranquil although it sounds like the weather might have put off some of those Pennine Way folk.
@@GENerationXplorers IMHO the best walking in the dales is in the dales not on the tops!... controversial eh!? Wensleydale and Swaledale are my favourites, although Wharfedale is beautiful as well 🤔 As for hills...I think Pen Hill above West Wilton in Wensleydale takes some beating, the heather will just about still be in bloom and it has superb views on a good day 👌 The 3 peaks are almost always busy these days so I tend to avoid them except by odd!! routes 😂 Enjoy your trip if you make it, midweek will be better... weekends are blighted by the "fast" boys on motorbikes (and that's from a confirmed petrolhead and motorcyclist!) ATB Alistair 👍
Great video Alastair- really missed you 👍 Looked a lovely quiet walk as the lakes are normally packed. Interesting to see that other hill with a Welsh man 🤷🏻♂️ (Pen y Ghent) means ‘the top of Ghent hill’. Crazy to see that mineshaft open to the elements
@@PhilipOlsen11 That's interesting about the Welsh connection! Never new the red roof was a shooting ground marra and totally agree hallin fell is bloody steep 😂 for it being a smaller fell it had me blowing what a trig point this is though and a got to stand on the top of it hahaha nice info of the surrounding fells marra cheers ...BUTCHY
@@10Fokker It's a lovely place, best visited in the evening when the sun is setting, I'm very lucky to live just a few miles away. Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers Alistair 👍
Short and steep but for the views you get on the top still worth it. Not been up for a few years and only been up Beda Fell once about 6 years ago, so that is well overdue another visit. I had a hacking cough for over 3 months at the beginning of the year and then only got rid of it after two lots of antibiotics and steroids, I hope it is not as bad as mine, cheers Alan
