Hey thanks for having a look at what my channel is all about..
Well I started this channel a while ago with a couple of videos of me wandering around the Peak District in Derbyshire. However now in 2020 I have decided to put more time aside to start growing my collection of videos on the RU-vid platform and also try as best I can to improve the quality of the videos that I produce.
All my videos are and will be based around having mini adventures in the outdoors, such as.... Wild Camping, Hiking, Climbing, Canoeing, Pack Rafting and Photography.
I do hope you enjoy my videos and they bring a little smile now and then.
Any constructive feedback is very much welcomed in the comment section and any advice on ways I can improve my videos is also very much appreciated.
Thanks again for dropping in on my channel and I look forward to communicating with you through the comments.
Haha It certainly makes the hike a little longer, but if I don’t go back then there would be no video😄 Thanks for watching Kevin, I hope you enjoyed the video🙂
@@DianneFogg Awww thank you Dianne for your kind words. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos. I hope they help you if you’re planning a few hikes of your own. Take care and thanks again for taking the time out to give them a watcharoo and for dropping me a little comment. All the very best..Mike
@@andrewfox2687 Thank you for your kind words Andrew. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to drop me a comment it’s much appreciated. Happy hiking. Mike🙂
@@mjojrjr6231 It’s considerably shorter than Striding Edge. It’s certainly worth doing as it’s a great scramble with fantastic views along the way. Best done on a dry day with light wind. Surface is very polished in places so take care. Thanks for watching🙂
Hi Jennifer, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you’re able to give this hike a go if you haven’t done it already as it’s a lovely route. Just be sure not to do the rake section of the route in wet conditions as it would be extremely slippery. Thank you so much for giving the video a watch and also for dropping me a comment. It’s very much appreciated. All the very best, happy hiking. Mike
Awww thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did take some footage of the descent down Gamlin End but I did not include it in the video. It was pretty much all gopro footage and even with the inbuilt stabilisation it turned out quite shaky so I ended up not using it. I only filmed a couple of minutes of it anyway as I realised pretty quickly that it was much more important to concentrate on the descent down over the loose terrain rather than obtaining footage for my video😰😂 Thank you for taking time out to watch my video and for dropping me a comment, it’s very much appreciated🙂 Happy hiking Mike
Just stumbled across your channel and this walk. Im planning on visiting the lake District next year and doing some of these amazing walks, possibly with a wild camp on top of Red Pike. Can you tell me how long the whole route took? Many thanks. Subscribed!
Hey thanks for taking the time out to give my video a watch. I hope it was of some help to help plan your trip. The whole route would probably take around 5.5 hours to complete. However it took me a wee bit longer due to having to stop all the time to film. A wild camp on top of Red Pike sounds fantastic. Just pick your day as it’s pretty exposed up there in the wind. Thanks for the sub it’s very much appreciated. I’ll be getting some more content up soon hopefully once I’ve recovered from an injury I acquired last year. Thanks again for the watch and the comment and I wish you a wonderful time on the route. All the very best Mike
Hey Mike.. i just found you on you tube.. I love the Lakes, walked many times Haystacks.. Brilliant footage, brought back memories.. I now reside in Canada, ATB Kenny. 👍🙏
Awww thank you Kenny. I’m super pleased that the video brought back good memories of your time in the lakes. It is a wonderful route. One of my favourites. I was hoping to get to Canada last May but I had to cancel due to an injury. Fingers crossed I’ll be over on that side of the pond in the next couple of years. It looks fantastic.!! Thanks again for giving the video a watch and for dropping me such a lovely comment, it’s much appreciated. All the very best Mike
Thank you Phil for your kind words they are very much appreciated. I’m glad the video was of some help in planning your trip. It’s a wonderful route, you should have a fantastic time on it. I hope the weather is good for you and you have an amazing day. Thank you again for taking the time to watch my video. Stay safe Mike
Awww thank you for those kind words🙏 I’m glad you enjoyed the video and for taking the time out to give it a watch, it’s much appreciated. Happy hiking Mike
Hey thank you for taking the time to give the video a watch, it’s very much appreciated🙏 The hike should take around 3 to 5 hours to complete depending on how long you stop to admire the views along the way. I wouldn’t rush it as it’s a wonderful route and the faster you go the less you see. Hope you have great weather, a safe hike and you enjoy every moment. All the best Mike
Thanks John I’m glad you enjoyed the video. You should have a great time, especially after all the recent rain we’ve had. The waterfalls should be in full flow. Enjoy yourself and thank you again for watching the video🙂 All the best Mike
Just found this video Mike - what a video. Best I’ve seen of JR, fantastic effort to capture the ascent in different directions from different perspectives. Really difficult thing to do, especially on your first ascent. Fabulous effort 👏
Awww thank you for your such kind words🙏 It did turn out to be a long day with all the stopping and starting but it was still super enjoyable to video the walk. If you haven’t done the rake already then I would definitely recommend doing it. You will have a wonderful time. Thank you so much for giving the video a watch it’s very much appreciated🙂 Happy hiking Mike
Hi, It’s not particularly too hard to find your way. However the area can become clagged in with low cloud all of a sudden on overcast days and you may start to veer off course. Best thing to do is to stay near the edge of the plateau and use the edge as a hand rail along the south rim. People tend to come unstuck when they venture in towards the middle of the plateau. Obviously bring a map and compass and a gps if you have one just in case. Hope you enjoy the walk if you do decide to take it on. Pick a clear day and I’m sure you’ll be fine. Lots of people to ask along the route if you’re unsure. Thanks for watching and happy hiking🙂 Mike
Excellent video, love the map plotting, followed by the walk. Great quality, and clarity of commentary. Plus, Mike, looks like you enjoyed, which to me is the whole point, not just ‘bagging Wainwrights’ lol. Did this in the blazing heat in 2021, so wasn’t the best day for it, almost passing out by the end. Watching this, dying to do it again on a cooler day.
Awww thank you for such wonderful feedback, it’s very much appreciated🙏 Yes I enjoyed the day immensely. Had the place to myself at Innominate Tarn which was nice. Plenty of time to sit and soak up the atmosphere. I’m pleased you’ve done the route but yea maybe a cooler day next time.!!😰 Thanks for watching the video I’m glad you enjoyed it. Happy hiking Mike
Awww thank you🙏 I’m glad you enjoyed it. Haha yea they are quite rare nowadays. That one I found hiding right at the back of my chocolate drawer. If you keep your eyes open you can still find em dotted around in the shops. Thanks again for taking the time out to give my video a watcharoo, it’s so very much appreciated🙂 Happy hiking Mike
It’s just a little too short for me. Still a nice day out though and well worth doing. Thanks for taking the time to drop me a comment and for watching the video. It’s much appreciated🙏 Happy and safe hiking🙂 Mike
Thanks Wayne, I’m glad you liked the video. If you haven’t done the walk, I would recommend you stick it on your to do list as it’s a wonderful one.!! Thanks again for watching the video🙏 Happy hiking. Mike.
Did the Sharp Edge route up Blencathra on only my 2nd visit to Lakeland and 3rd Wainwright. Late April, perfect weather. No trouble at all. I figure that I must have a head for heights. I'm on 76 W's now. Last summer I did the edge again and followed up next day with Striding Edge. Helvellyn very busy, no surprises there. Two fantastic days, both with glorious weather.
Could it be a 'weather'? I think this is the name of sheep between a lamb and mutton, because they had been out on the Moor over winter, so they were 'weathered'
Hey Shaun, thanks for dropping me a comment on my sheep question🙂 Someone earlier on in the comments mentioned that they were called a.. “Gimmer” if female. However you’re absolutely right as I’ve just googled it, a “Weather” is a young male sheep. Every day is a learning day for me🙂 Thanks for giving the video a watch, I hope you enjoyed it and thanks again for taking the time out to drop me a comment. All the very best Mike
A question, I would not say that I am fit, do you think a slow stroll with stops along the way is possible. How long does the climb take in total. Thanks Kim.
Hi Kim, Yes I’m sure you would be fine on this route. Plenty of places along the route to stop and rest and fill up water container if you use a water filter so I don’t see you having too much of a problem with it. Lovely route with wonderful views along the way. It’s a very popular route so try if you can to do it during the week or out of school holidays season. Allow for around 4 hours in good weather. Hope this helps. Happy hiking and thanks for watching the video🙏 Mike.
Hey, The map I used in this video is the The English Lakes, OS Explorer OL6, South-Western Area. You should be able to find it on Amazon or at any outdoor shop. Hope this helps. Thanks for giving the video a watch. Mike.
@@FurrychalkbagOutdoors I presume we can expect HDR content soon then as you production looks out of this world on my stupidly oversized 75" QLED HDR 4k Dolby Atmos all singing TV.
@@mrz5705 Haha I don’t know about HDR but maybe more 4K. I only have an old HD telly. I can’t bring myself to get rid of it for a 4K one just yet, not while it’s still ticking along nicely. Must be like sitting in a Cinema in you house.!!!🥤🍿🙂
Awww thanks for the kind words🙏 Glad you got to do the route. It is a fantastic summer walk. Yes it can be very windy up there over the winter. Hope you had a dead cat on your microphone🙉 All the very best Mike
Hi Mike have only just come across you on YT ,I will be catching up on your other videos shortly , was a really good watch this one ,I walked the Kinder skyline about 18 months ago, but didn't notice the shelter ,maybe its more recent , is it near the path and easy to notice ,I camped out just further along almost overlooking the pub , I could hear all the motorbikes roaring by ,great camp , thanks Steve the Bolton Wanderer 🥾🥾🍺🍺
Hi Steve, The shelter is set back approximately 50 yards from the edge/path. It is quite hard to notice that it’s been turned into a shelter as the stones that have been used blend in very well with the rock. Well done on doing the skyline by the way, it’s a great adventure. Thanks for taking the time out to give the video a watch, it’s very much appreciated. Take care and happy hiking, Mike
Thank you Paul for your very kind words🙏 So pleased you like my videos. It’s so good of you to drop me a comment. It’s much appreciated🙏 All the very best Mike
Hey fella, It’s on the north rim just past Seal Rocks on the way to Fairbrook. If you’re planning on a night out under it, do it on a night with no wind or a wind coming from the south west. Thanks for watching All the best Mike
@@FurrychalkbagOutdoors many thanks, im struggling the find it, do you mean fairbrooke naze? And are we approaching from the left or right we ate starting our quest at kinder downfall.
@@15DAVIDYOUNG If you’re coming from the Downfall, you would go past Fairbrook Naze. It’s along Seal Edge roughly 500 m before you arrive at Seal Stones.
Thanks Ant🙏 I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for taking the time out to give it a watch. It’s very much appreciated🙏 Happy hiking Mike
@@alanrogers9589 Thanks Alan, I’m pleased you enjoyed it. To answer your question…Technically yes you do. If you have a British Canoeing Membership then that will cover it. Otherwise you can obtain a license from the Canal and River Trust. The BC membership is pretty cheap and it covers you for lots of other places along with the River Weaver. Hope this helps🙂 Happy paddling Mike
Hey Harv, Yea it’s a wonderful route. You will have a great time. Hope the weather is good for you🤞 Thanks for giving the video a watch it’s very much appreciated🙏 Happy and safe hiking Mike
Hey thanks for watching🙏 Yea it was a great trip out. You always pretty much get the place to yourself over on the north side of kinder. Yes the sunrise made up for the poor sunset the night before🙂 All the very best. Mike
Thanks so much for the great vid. Hopefully can now try and persuade my slightly over protective parents, who did Jack’s Rake when they were younger, to let me scale it. I’m presuming it should be ok as I’ve done Toreador Gully before on Haystacks before and a few other scrambles like Sharp Edge and Striding Edge. Would you recommend, taking into account possible dangers and the rest?
Hi Rowan, Thanks for the comment🙂 I personally don’t see it any harder or dangerous than Sharp Edge. So if you were quite ok with SE then you should be ok with JR. There is a dodgy step across that has to completed but after that it’s pretty much ok. There maybe a little bit more climbing involved than Sharp Edge but most of it is inside a small gully. Just make sure you do it on a very dry day as there is always a bit of seepage out of the rock. Thanks for watching my video, I hoped it helped🙂 Happy hiking Mike
Nice! There was a section in that downhill I wouldn't be able to navigate, (old busted up leg) Aloha from Hawaii! 🌈 loved the old slate quarry buildings.
Hey Noel, Thanks for giving the video a watch. Yea it’s a steep descent down from the top. My knees were hurting a bit when I arrived at the bottom. Yes the old buildings were very interesting. A lot of history there for sure.!! I love Hawaii.!! I visited Oahu a number of years ago, loved every moment I was there.!! Thank you so much for dropping me an Aloha, it made me remember my visit. All the very best my friend Mike🙂
Wow. It's November and I have been for a walk on the local park. It's now nearly dark. I am sat outside with a glass and a really good single malt from Mull. This video appeared on RU-vid. Having watched it I really feel I have been with you all the way. I'm refreshed and grateful to you. Thank you
Hi Fuzz, Yea the nights are certainly drawing in now unfortunately. I’m so glad the video brought back a little summer sunshine for you. Sounds like you definitely know the best way to watch RU-vid🙂 Thank you so much for giving the video a watch and for dropping me a comment, it’s so very much appreciated🙏 Enjoy your Whiskey and happy hiking🙂 Mike
Thanks Dianna🙏 Haha yea it’s a big old backpack😃 It’s a special one for camera equipment. It has a lot of foam padding inside to help protect the equipment. That’s why it looks so big🙂 Thank you for giving the video a watch. I’m glad you enjoyed it🙂 Happy hiking Mike
Thank you Dave🙏 I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was thinking of splitting it into four parts as it is a very long video. Thank you again for taking the time out to give it a watch🙏🙂 Mike
@@sillwuka There is a National Trust car park near the base of Mam Tor with plenty of parking. The walk to the summit of Mam Tor itself is a very straight forward one, with stone steps most of the way. The climb up these is quite hard on the knees but if you take your time and rest along the way you shouldn’t have a problem. The walk along the ridge to Hollins Cross is a lovely down hill walk with great view’s to the left and right of you. It’s a good little stroll for beginners. Because of this it is very busy at the weekend. Go during the week if you can🙂 Happy hiking Mike
