These very interesting but some would say distasteful episodes in American history should be discussed. Not to lay blame or guilt but just to give us a deeper understanding of who we are and why, for example americans value highly the right to own a firearm and be able to defend your home. I think as a society we are mature enough to look back on these chapters without getting uselessly emotional about it.

I saw it outside Smithfield WV in 1985. The only detail that was different was that it held both hands up to the bottom of its mouth with really longs fingers that dangled down from there. The angle of it fingers from its forearms was about 150 degrees. Impossible for a human.

When I was a little boy, we used to play a game where we would feud. Like the Hatfields and McCoy's a great American rivalry part of our heritage.

I was born in West Virginia. My dad's side all grew up there. In 1980, my dad took us away from there. I grew up in Arkansas but spent summers with my grandparents in their little town in West Virginia. I have fond memories of riding around that town on our bikes with my cousins. The last time I was in West Virginia it was for a funeral. Most of the family I have there is gone. West Virginia is literally a dying state for me.

There was a movie we had to watch in school (public school in WV in the 90s) I think it was just entitled "Matawan". Wish I could find it again!! I'd want my children to see it- we are from a mining family. And everybody knows WV kids know their State history the best in the Union!!

I dont appreciate that you say being illetrate in thst day (90 percent of people were all over the country) or being pregnant or barefoot or as impled poor are negative! Those arent negative things. Being hardworking settling where you had to make what you had as tgere were no stores to buy shoes and reproducing and thriving! Those are positive things! Things that settled and made this country! Brave strong people.
@RecordWestVirginia

We never said those things, those were the things the New York papers wrote about the people here when covering the feud. Stereotypes that still persist today. Stereotypes there were also untrue then and untrue now. Nearly all of the the people involved in the feud had shoes as did most people in the area at the time and Devil Anse was highly literate, also you're way off when you say 90% of the people in the country were illiterate in the time of the feud. The literacy rate in the 1870s was about 80% and that was also about what the literacy rate in southern WV was at the time as well. Meaning only around 20% of the population was illiterate then. We were not behind, despite the way the New York how the New York papers covering the event tried to portray us.

I cannot understand why a pregnant woman would name her baby "Devil".
@RecordWestVirginia
@RecordWestVirginia 4 месяца назад
His real name was William Anderson Hatfield.. But he went by Anderson and was called Anse for short. The exact origin of the nickname "Devil Anse" is not known as there are several likely stories however, the most widely accepted is that it was given to him during his time fighting for the confederacy in the Civil War.

I just found my biological fathers family last year. Sadly he and my two siblings have passed so I cannot ask them My aunt told me that we are related to the Hatfields in some way. I teach high school history and actually had a debate with my students who were saying the Hatfields are no better than the street gangs. An eye for an eye. Smart kids. Now three years later I find out I am related. My dads family lives in upstate Wisconsing, Michigan area. I see online some Hatfields did live there in MIN. But I lost the link and now cannot find it. The rabbit hole was very deep that day. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank you

A great source of information on Hatfield & McCoys as as just southern WV history in general is the Katherine McCoy of the WV Mine Wars museum. She knows a lot about the linage of both families.

I’m sure devil anse and Randal new each other before the civil war but devil ance did Dessert his post and Randal and his unit was captured that’s really what started the problems between the families I think Randal was sent to a place called 88 acres of hell. Another thing is Devil ance was not a captain but a private but people make them to be out hero’s when they wasn’t they where cold blooded murders women beaters child killers house burners and yes they are some kin too me but people gets a lot twisted for Tourism these days.

Thanks for sharing. Several years ago, I was with a friend target shooting next to a creek bank when we noticed a Timber Rattlesnake in a cluster of fallen leaves. We gave the snake his space and just watched it. Apparently, it didn't feel threatened because it didn't change its posture. That was one of the most interesting encounters I've had with any snake.

Wow, I really love this video. It was really amazing. I love the scenery in parts of the video that showed actual areas in West Virginia, and/or the whole Ohio valley. We really need these sort of videos more often. I think they’re amazing and it really is an uplifting thing because it does draw interest, especially from young people in Sweden could really know how special of a place America truly is. I have such great reverence, love and respect for the Native Americans that used to dominate this land, and I think that they were treated unfairly course, but they also made some mistakes and did some terrible things themselves. Unfortunately when it comes to progress and Technology, and different civilizations meeting each other it always goes the way were the more technologically advanced. Civilization is going to usually unseat. The one that is not is advanced. Hopefully we can learn from the mistakes of the past and yet at the same time really love and respect and understand people, and the things that occurred in the past as well.

I heard these stories from my Dad during the 1950's. As a kid, I never really understood the true significance of this struggle. My Dad was a UMWA guy but seemed to understand both sides of the conflict. Any way you look at the struggle, it was a dark time for America.

Ironically commanded by Yankee Col Robert E Lee. Worse choice to command CSA military. South would have won the war. Brown was hanged even though heavily wounded lying on a stretcher. They picked him up held him put the noise on him and hit the gallows drop door.
