Confederates were traitors to the United States. Tearing down a statue does not change history and I think there is a place those statues belong and information that can be learned from them. I do believe they should have never been erected in Government buildings/property. Just seems odd to put a statue of someone who fought against the United States in/on property owned by the United States.

@@RecordWestVirginiait was what the community wanted. The government, at the end of the day is not its own entity. It’s made of up of people from the community. The communities that fought for the south naturally wanted to honor their dead and their leaders. The problem is people that people lost sight of the fact that the government is not some separate independent entity, I quote “by the people, for the people”. Furthermore it is actually questionable whether Lincoln’s war was legal. So, I have to disagree with you about the statutes, the sanitization of history, and that the confederates were traitors, as your assertion is not supported by historical facts. The only act of aggression on the part of the Confederacy was the attack on Ft. Sumpter, after the Federal commander refused to vacate what the State considered it’s sovereign territory. Even before this though, Lincoln had called for volunteers to invade the South. More people should read more history more thoroughly. 😉

In all fairness this feud isn't responsible for ALL of the serotypes. I am not saying that to be mean. My dad was from WV and my moms family came from Kentucky. I am related to both Hatfield's and McCoy's and I have been all over the states. A lot of that stuff comes from a very real place. Anyone that is used to a city existence and visits WV is going to feel like they landed on a different planet.

Anse Hatfield was far from a dumb hillbilly he ran a very successful timber buisness and was a large landowner, and from all accounts McCoy was a timber man as well just wasnt as successful, I lived in west Va for 3 yrs growing up and the people there are solid Gold for the most largest part salt of the earth once u get to know them as it took me a couple yrs to gain there trust n to fight in and my family lived there at the time, thats the way it had to be back then to earn trust n respect from helping one another, what I wouldnt give to go back in time of my carefree teenage yrs living there it was the happiest n best yrs of my life, i wished i had married a west virginia lady to when i had the chances, as the food I ate when living there was the best as anywhere i ever ate and i ate plently of places all over the country as I worked as a over the road trucker nothing compared to the food I ate when living in west virginia, I can say making the honor roll in school as something about every family member of mine easily did every yr and most all the school was very intelligent even if they talk funny to you, they darn sure are smart n most of them are from pioneering familys , familys that had grandfathers n their sons or one of the other who fought in the American revolutionary war , they are Patriots and west virginia has more veterans per capita than about any other state, even if they talk funny to some folks they are genuine n the salt of the earth.

I think you are correct in that it was Staton who testified. But, according to Mr. Richardson, Selkirk was on the jury and he casts his vote against Randall in favor of Floyd.

The Hatfield and McCoy families jointly hold an annual 'family' reunion in Williamson, WV. Seems they get along just fine.

That area is my hometown. There are a lot of relatives from both sides still in the area and they do get along.

It was common for the number of casualties to be greatly exaggerated in the media for the purpose of selling the story. In fact, America has had far, far more bloody family fueds than this one. But, this one is perhaps its most infamous.

I'm sure you're right on family feuds of the past being many. I lived outside of Beckley WV for a couple years...late 70s

It would be nice if some of the profit those companies like the Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show in TN make went to the families for sure.

The fact that Mingo County has more diversity than what you think of from the coal fields of WV due to the fact that so many of the men who worked in the early days of the coal industry were recently freed slaves and new scot, Irish and Italian immigrants. Many of theid decedents still remain here. And two, while racism certainly exists here as it does everywhere in America, it is not nearly as pervasive as what stereotypes about the area may make you believe. I disagree. Knowing when it is time to leave is a survivors trait. Leaving because of fear is different though. I volunteer myself I can also Unvolunteer myself.

Desertion was a big problem in the war but especially the CSA. The CSA was a total disaster.

This was at the height of the Yellow Journalism days and the newspaper war between William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. So sensationalism was rampant as those two tried to take control of the industry

His real name was William Anderson Hatfield.. But he went by Anderson and was called Anse for short. The exact origin of the nickname "Devil Anse" is not known as there are several likely stories however, the most widely accepted is that it was given to him during his time fighting for the confederacy in the Civil War.

As an Appalachian, I can 100% relate to unfair and ridiculous stereotypes. Btw, I think Polynesians have such an interesting history.

I am from the Pittsburgh area and all I know is I drove through about 4 and a half hours of WV to get there, got lost on some backwoods windy-ass coal-mining roads, went over a few mountains, and found myself in Deliverance. I ended up in VA, but I got lost and ventured into both WV and KY before I found where I was supposed to be. I Passed some gigantic industrial furnace thing in a valley as well, it was a mile long with at least 20 gleaming smoke stacks glowing red, it looked like freaking Mordor. Maybe a coke plant or some ore smelting plant? Who knows. Essentially, I knew I was in a foreign land when I passed "Hurley High School" and the football field was a damn rectangle cut out of a sheer rock face and the front doors were a giant Confederate Flag. It was like entering another world. Pittsburgh isn't even that liberal compared to most other medium to large East Coast cities, and yet, the good folks of Hurley/Grundy and Knox Creek made us look like AOC and a bunch of Socialist Marxists. Culture shock to the extreme. Maybe I can edit my post to stay in WV, I can say for sure that the Beckley suburbs and the Whiteville WV area are quite a trip too.

If you head South on US 52 on the WV side or 23 on the KY side it's like traveling back in time 5 years every 45 minutes you go until you hit NC then you slow start coming back to the present day lol

@@RecordWestVirginia pretty much was a time machine when I lived there off of 52 near dunlow wva in the early 80's as a youth for 3 yrs, drugs has it it hard, but now most of the dirt roads which was most of them then dirt n gravel has been blacktopped I took a trip back there fall before last, most all my kin has died or moved out when they grew up looking for work, but I did still find some mighty fine people i never met before who treated me better than my friends back home, i guess in a way in wva im always back home in my heart

We never said those things, those were the things the New York papers wrote about the people here when covering the feud. Stereotypes that still persist today. Stereotypes there were also untrue then and untrue now. Nearly all of the the people involved in the feud had shoes as did most people in the area at the time and Devil Anse was highly literate, also you're way off when you say 90% of the people in the country were illiterate in the time of the feud. The literacy rate in the 1870s was about 80% and that was also about what the literacy rate in southern WV was at the time as well. Meaning only around 20% of the population was illiterate then. We were not behind, despite the way the New York how the New York papers covering the event tried to portray us.
