Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial, changes its location every two years. Manifesta 14 was hosted in Prishtina, Kosovo. Manifesta 15 will take place in the summer of 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. Founded in the early 1990s, Manifesta rethinks the relation between culture and civic society, investigating and instigating positive social change through contemporary culture. Manifesta has consistently chosen unexpected host locations that reflect Europe’s ever-changing DNA to shed light on a world defined by changing ethical and aesthetic imperatives. Since its conception, Manifesta has transformed into an inclusive and multidisciplinary biennial that works across art, architecture and urban development.
I saw the English version at the Art Museum in Reykjavik, luckily I was the only one viewing this stirring performance because I began crying and hoped no one would see me. Thank you Mr. Kjartansson.

We have discovered this exceptional video performance in a Rome museum last year. We were very impressed of the Mantra-like execution with the increasing force of the orchestra. Take the time to understand the meaning of this work, the valuable expression of compassion.

It's so interesting that Soviet communal kitchens in particular were used as locations for resistance. As an artist/historian, I researched Russian workers' 1917 use of factory dormitory communal kitchens as meeting places for revolutionaries fighting against tsarist oppression (Working Women in Russia Under the Hunger Tsars). Factory owners often located large factories in the countryside, particularly around Moscow. To attract a labor force to live near the factory, they had to build dormitories, in which two or more families shared each room. Women cooked in large communal kitchens, which in turn served as large meeting spaces during the 1917 Revolutions. It's fascinating that communal kitchens - traditionally women's spaces - were the largest gathering spaces available for "public/private" resistance throughout the 20th century.
