They still charge $250 for the F-15 bank and yank with no smart tech, flaps, lights... This is the first time I've actually been excited for a release. This will be my new main grab and go jet!
Thanks for the lesson and video. I also have the AeroScout and have flown it a few times now. Trying to practice takeoff and landing. But I hear that I find it quite scary, the tension is high. I'm still on beginners mode and don't dare to take the next step yet. But with your advice I can practice further. And in between I take many breaks to relax..
Thanks Bob! Man I tell you...AS3X+ is a game changer. I've heard it said that the OG AS3X made planes fly bigger, and to be honest I felt that with a few, but not many. There is a difference in "good" and "bigger". So far with AS3X+, everything I've tuned with it and flown did in fact feel like a bigger plane, and as you well know...bigger flies better.

Lights are a nice upgrade. Spec it for 6S power and add retracts. Quite a few 64mm jets are hitting the marked spec'd for 6S power and have retracts. The Horizon Hobby faithful will enjoy this airplane but keep in other manufacturers are spec'ing their 64mm aircraft with things eFlite has yet to introduce (FlyFans 64mm L-39 comes to mind for comparison).
You know I flew one of those L-39s and it flew well, but felt heavy (guy was using a 3000 pack). I think when you get to that feature level, just make it a 70mm and use batteries many already have...they can take more common 3200 and 4000 6s and the slightly larger size handles the extras better . The whole point of airplanes in this category (64mm) is simplicity and being able to use common 2200 to 2600 4s packs that many already have. That flyfans is a good price...until you add RX as good as this Viper comes with and then buy batteries for it as most folks don't have 1800 to 2200 6s packs, which it flies best with from what I read about it. Lighter that way. The truth is...there are just a few 64mm 6s single engine jets available, but there are dozens of 4s 64mm out there...which is why most already have batteries for them.
Sorry to hear that. Mines great for a full bodied foam 3D plane, I'm impressed in that regard, but no foam plane will fly like an Extreme Flight balsa plane will. I've seen many expect that kind of experience with foam planes, and that isn't going to happen with any of them. I've flown Flex, FMS, and E-flite 3D planes. So far nothing foam flies as good or as precise as a really good balsa 3D plane, but to be fair they aren't intended to compete with those anyway. I personally prefer this one over the Flex Extra and Cap. Haven't flown their Laser yet. I like the easy programmability with AS3X...and I updated mine to AS3X+...that makes a significant difference. If you want to try that let me know, I'll give you my + set-up.
@ModelAV8RChannel thanks for the response. I'm just gonna sell it. I've been flying RC for 40 years. This plane acts like it's tail heavy, but it's not. It has this quirk where just as you are coming off the throttle those last few "clicks" the nose begins to pitch up. I've shown it to several of the flyers and all are baffled. It literally will go from an establish approach to a climb, all hands off. I had to program in down elevator that comes in with very low throttle. It's all set up just as the manual states. Running 4S 3200 packs, but it does it exactly the same with a 4S 2200 pack, literally no difference at all. It's a puzzle. Maybe the AS3X plus would do something, but I doubt it.
Yep. Man the first time I experienced that was about 12 years ago with a Precision Aerobatics Extra. Drove me nuts at the time so I get it. With that one it was an incidence thing. They actually did it on purpose to make the post stall characteristics better (so they said). It was only annoying when landing and I couldn't see a difference in how it performed over 3DHS and Extreme Flight planes I was flying at the time that landed normally. Strange. Lol. With this Extra it does the same thing, but not quite as bad. I did the same thing with the PA planes you did...just a little throttle to elevator mix on a switch for landing, and the inputs felt more natural. For some reason...maybe it is that I fly so many different planes now with the YT channel, but it doesn't bother me...I just compensate for it. I guess I'm happy with how a foamy performs 3D for a change (which usually isn't the case) so since it is just evident when landing I'm alright with it. Also may be that I've had a few other foam 3D planes do that too...not sure why. Anyway man...with the AS3X+ it made a difference in the 3D and XA in a positive way for me, but I like to tinker with the tuning and I have it just like I want it, much better than the stock set up I think. That said it won't improve the pitch up on landing, but your mix should sort that if you like how it does everything else.

I have another question if you don't mind. I moved my elevator out to the outer hole on the servo and inner on the elevator and now I'm getting positive oscillation feedback in the neutral position. Did you see anything like that on your setup? I had to put it back to the second hole on the servo arm. Very frustrating.
You mean oscillation at speed? Turn the pitch gain down in forward programming. I'm at the same place...outer hole on the servo arm and inner hole on the control horn. My servo travel on elevator is 138% up/dn. Anytime you add throw to any control surface...you may have to turn the gain down on that axis.
@@ModelAV8RChannel The oscillation is occurring on the ground prior to AS3X even being on. I have seen articles on this issue that solve this problem by placing some Velcro loop material between the stab and the elevator counter balance to create just enough friction at neutral to eliminate it, but of course, this plane doesn't have that option. So I'm afraid to fly it with that going on. When the linkage is setup in original configuration, there is no oscillations at neutral. I guess it could be a bad servo, but it sure looks like positive oscillations (similar to having gain to high on gyro but this is without the gyro being on). If the control surface is touched to dampen the feedback, it stops oscillating. According to the article I read on this, it is caused by too much flexibility in the whole control surface which is commonly found on 3D type planes. Edit: I think the servo is bad. I got it to oscillate even with the control arm removed from the servo. I just ordered another servo. Was looking forward to flying it this weekend as the weather is perfect. I'll have to fly my other stuff instead.
Ahh okay. When I say oscillation I'm usually talking about airborne gyro gains and on the ground at rest I say vibration...although both are correct terms. Interestingly enough I've seen people fly with them like that. I actually do with my Freewing A-4. The rudder has always done that...did the velcro trick and that stops it sometimes, but it still does it sometimes as well. The airflow does the same thing your finger does when you touch it, and on my A-4 that has been fine for about 150 flights. I've seen that on plug up with some 3D planes with a freshly charged battery, but it stops when you touch it and when the battery discharges a bit it doesn't do it again. In your case doing that with no surface attached via a pushrod...yeah servos shouldn't do that and I'd replace it too.

first of all I have to say great review! I have just got this bird and was flying a self made balsa bigger one with fixed slats. I would like to ask if to better balance the P factor it could be a good idea to add some more right deflection of the engine adding the classic washer under the mount.

Hell yeah! Give it the beans! Been waiting for this review since HH released their video on YT at 9:30 this morning. I'd say they knocked it out of the park with this bird. On packs I have an abundance of, it's gonna be hard for me to not spend a few nights in the dog house for this one. Not that it's over priced at all. Just the last 4 planes I bought this summer were each " the last plane I'll need until at least Christmas"... 😊 Awesome job, Heidi! Great, informative and demonstrative review, per usual, Adam. Wow. The features are amazing for a 64mm. Alot of people are crying about the price before they see a great review like you give. That's why I always wait to pull the trigger until I see your videos. This is my price point for sure. Kinda like buying steaks these days. I'm not paying 14 dollars a pound for steaks or 500 dollars for a piece of foam. This is a great plane all the features we want. Retracts everyone says would just raise the price to 350. Horizons technology is getting so good that pretty soon we are going to forget how to program a reciever lol. I guess that's s good thing. Thanks very much Jay! We appreciate the kind words. It really is "Top of the class" as they say. Features are very nice, but if it is at the cost of performance they aren't worth it...the Viper 64 has both, and that really impresses me. I have flown a couple of 64's that can perform with it speed/climb wise, but none this feature packed...and it out performs most 64's. We do need to do another bush flying vid...got to find some good places. Losing our old field really hurt us in that regard. It was perfect for it.

I heard your comments. I happen to have an ix12 with the latest firmware BEFORE this last update. Am I NOT going to be able to update the tx to as3x+ and if not could I still BNF with this plane?
You can still fly a BNF with AS3X+ with an iX12...you'll just be stuck with the AS3X+ settings for the model that are programmed in at the factory...however those settings are usually very good for most pilots. It is my understanding that you cannot update the iX12 with the expansion update or take advantage of the SMART TX file with the iX12.
Good stuff AV8R, but all things considered, seeing how the $ is a bit high for what it is, I'd rather spend $40 more to purchase the full function 70mm F-22 from MRC. Most of us have a gyro rx laying around that still work just fine. AirHammer out!!
@@ModelAV8RChannel I use the DX8G2 w/forward programming. Like you, I'm unsure if it's compatible. I'll check, but probably not. Edit: I'm frugal and I've always wanted a F-22.
F-22's are awesome too man! Just FYI, you can still bind to and fly a BNF model with AS3X+ with a G2DX8. You may not be able to go in forward programming and make adjustments to it, but the factory AS3X+ settings will be fine for most pilots.
Fine demo flying. Seeing how sleek and fast looking the Viper is - doing some of the flipity do dah (tumble) type maneuvers isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But I can tell you had a good time with it all.
If I get this BNF version, can I bind my NX6 without the AX3S+ transmitter update on it? If not, and I go ahead and update my NX6 with the AX3S+ update, do I then have to up date all the models (approx 20) in my NX6 to AX3S+?
Yes, you can bind your NX6 to the Viper and take advantage of AS3X+ without the update. However, it is well worth doing the update. It will turn your NX6 into a 14 channel TX and you'll be able to load SMART TX files into your transmitter from the RX in BNF AS3X+ planes. You do not have to update all your RX's. You will still be able to fly and tune the OG AS3X. Once you try AS3X+ though...you'll be updating some of them I'd bet.
