maybe a stupid question, but in which language is this song? i'm asking because i know finnish and that's why estonian sounds somewhat familiar but not completely of course but this song sounds like something between slavic and finnougric languages so is it some other finnougric language spoken along the border or do i just not know estonian? 😅

Seemingly no one has done this before, so here's my humble attempt at transcribing the lyrics of this song, as well as translation and surface level analysis: (note: lyrics in Russian (yes, in Russian) are transliterated the way they are pronounced rather than the way they would be spelled with Cyrillic) A yesli veterok veteruyetsa A vada valnami valnuyet- Sashe stabude staba stafo Opyat' aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Kus on minu kasekesed? Kus on minu kasekesed? Metsas on Metsas on Kus on minu kasekesed? Kus on minu kasekesed? Kus on minu kasekesed? Metsas on Metsas on Kus on minu kasekesed? Adjuwyqy agena amotha Abydow wenothe sumote suwota Gekest otenawa a mu ka sa Muzyka pa natepu Adjeturmuni kamanda worka Pana sama netu, pastama na ko Pana-na yu kule O na-na-na-mea, na-na-na-mea a! Yesli fortachka ne zakroyetsa A vada valnami valnuyet- Savye stambozhya stabeda fo Opyat' aderzhym (Opyat' aderzhym/taboy aderzhym) Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Taboy aderzhym Gde mai berioziki? Gde mai berioziki? Ani v lesu Ani v lesu Gde mai berioziki? [The outro consists of inaudible singing, with the only discernible words seemingly being “Kus on minu kasekesed” again] Now, what does all of that mean? Translation and analysis: Verse 1 [in Russian]: (And) if (the) wind is winding And (the) water /.../ is waving /with waves/ [A line of nonsense lyrics] Again (I'm) obsessed With you (I'm) obsessed (x5) "Veteruyetsa" is not a real word, it's just a verb created by adding the ending "-yetsa" (denoting a state of being) to the root "veter" (rus. for wind). Unlike the word "volnuyetsa", which can describe the behaviour of waves on water, though it more commonly means "to worry" (infinit. rus. - volnovatsa). Also, yes, I did transcribe the nonsense lyrics just for fun. Refrain [in Estonian] Ok, I don't actually speak Estonian, so I used some commonly available language resources for this part. So, the title of the song - "Kasekesed" seems to be an intentional misspelling of a form of the word "kask" (est. for birch tree). I'm not sure which form it is since there's a whole ass table of them and I don't know which one would be correct to use in this sentence. It might also be a diminutive, but I don't know how diminutives work in Estonain. Either way the sentence "Kus on minu kasekesed?" pretty definitely translates to "Where (are) my birches?" The answer to that question - "Metsas on" translates to "In (the) forest". After the refrain follows a string of nonsense lyrics. They seem to be mimicking how American rap sounds to non-anglophones. There is also exactly one discernable word in these lyrics - "muzyka" which is means "music" in some Slavic languages. I don't think that actually means anything. Verse 2 [in Russian] If (the) window doesn't close [itself] And (the) water /.../ is waving /with waves/ [A bunch more nonsense lyrics] Again (I'm) obsessed [The previous and following lines here are sung simultaneously] With you (I'm) obsessed (x4) The first line can alternatively be translated as "If (the) window isn't closed (eventually)". Also, "fortachka" isn't actually the Russian word for window - that would be "akno", instead it refers specifically to the separate openable part of it. It can also refer to a door in a fence, but that's probably too much linguistic trivia. Refrain [in Russian] The translation is pretty much the same: "Where are my birches?" "They're in the forest" Interestingly, the word for "birches" here is also mispronounced. The plural diminutive of the word for "birch" (rus. - berioza) would be "beriozki" not "berioziki". And that's pretty much it, I guess. I really hope a native Estonian speaker will clarify the proper translation of the Estonian refrain of the song. Lastly, for the record: I'm not actually Russian.

Fun fact: this is the song through which 5miinust first found out about the existence of Puuluup back in 2019, because it was nominated for the "Best Song" category at Estonian Music Awards that year, while 5miinust's biggest hit of that year wasn't, which angered 5miinust very much. That incident determined the bands' fate of getting together a couple of years later.
