How much moisture does your button bush need? Did you plant it in a wet spot, dry, or in between? :)
@AumsAcre
@AumsAcre Месяц назад
That’s a great question, thanks for reaching out. So I find that it does need some moisture. But this particular button bush was an absolute beast. During the first year, it got severely rubbed by a deer the day before I put a fence around it. I was so bummed out. But I let it go and the following spring nothing was happening and it was about to cut it back and I saw a little green shoot… And it took off from there. The Made a site visit to Bowman‘s nursery and saw buttonbush there and realized how much moisture it actually needed. So I provided about 24 inches of wood chips around the base of the stem of the bush extending out about 4 to 6 feet. I don’t water it ever after that I applied the chips. And finally on the third year it flowered. This is the fourth year I’ve had the bush and it’s absolutely thriving. I know this is lengthy but all in all, if you heavily mulch it you’ll be fine. Hope that helps. 🙏☮️

Hi neighbor! Thank you for this informative video. It’s been a dream of mine to have a meadow on my property in Charlestown Township. I missed out on the Lawn to Meadow program offered by the Chester County Conservation District. Evidently, there was a lot of interest from CC landowners which is a great thing. I am just beginning my research and I think you saved me a lot of work especially when it comes to selecting seeds. Two questions. Do you know of any companies around here that specialize in installing a meadow and how in the world do you keep the deer, rabbits and birds from decimating the meadow before it even has a chance to establish itself. I love the wildlife that I have attracted to my property, but boy are they hungry!
@AumsAcre
@AumsAcre 2 месяца назад
Hi Neighbor!!! So exciting!! You’re probably right around the corner from me. Anyways, yes, there are some companies out there, but there is one in particular that has the highest level of integrity. wildlawn.com They are a USDA level 4 company along with itheir sister Company Archewild. Wildlawn installs, Archewild source and grows seeds. They have basically developed a GPS system where they identify and collect the actual seeds themselves and then grow them in their own nursery. Why is this so important? - because the level of integrity of the seed will allow for your site conditions to thrive. I know them personally, and they are awesome. Good honest people as well. Just let them know that Michael sent you, get nothing out of it. And don’t forget to send some before and after pictures, I’d love to see it. 🙏🙏🙏🌱🌱🌱🌱
@AumsAcre
@AumsAcre 2 месяца назад
Oh the deer yeah, the deer as weak as nature is going to do what it’s going to do. That’s why Wildlawn will select along with your input the proper seeds that will thrive. I still battle the deer every single day. They absolutely love my New England, Astors. But at the end of the day, what is supposed to be there will remain there, Nature won’t discriminate, it will create an organic meadow for you. But in full transparency, there’s nothing like having a beautiful brilliant meadow filled with grasses and wildflowers, and a deer in meadow browsing. Inviting nature for us only put a smile on our face. There’s no greater reward than giving back! And once we gave back, we understood that the reward was not for us, but for all creatures.

@@AumsAcre Thank you so much for referring wildlawn. I will definitely be contacting them. As for the wildlife, I am learning to adopt a live and let live outlook. I’m that way with people so it should be easy to do when it comes to animals. I tell myself that if I keep providing a salad bar I should expect the customers to come. Besides, what is cuter than fawns and baby rabbits? I’m going to share this video with my neighbors who are also very interested in converting part of their lawn to meadow. One is a beekeeper. His bees visit my property and we need to keep them happy. I’ll keep you posted as to my progress. Thanks, again!

How do you cut back a meadow? I have a garden tractor and was curious if I can do it woth that
@AumsAcre
@AumsAcre 2 месяца назад
Once a year. In Spring. Lots of beneficial bugs overwinter in some hollow stems. I’ve manual cut back with pruners to 4 inches, takes a long long time. But you can set tractor to 4/6 inches that way too. That’s what I did this year. You can you a weed trimmer, powerful one with thick gauge or those steel blades too. The other alternative is to not cut it back. Nature never cuts back it’s Meadows, so that’s probably the best way. It just depends on how tidy you want to keep things. I let mine go pretty long this year until I cut it back. Hope that helps and good luck. Let me know how it turns out. 🙏🙏🙏

It’s definitely a great idea to increase biodiversity, and inter plant different things that complement each other. Ps. My pawpaws didn’t start fruiting until the 5th or 6th year and you might need to have two or more for better pollination. My tallest one might be 15ft now (and that one only gets half day morning sun). Happy growing! 👏💚

Whats the reality of taking a lawn and turning it into wildflowers?
@AumsAcre

It’s actually not hard. The reality is it takes patience and researching what thrives in your own mini ecosystem. I would observe your surroundings and check out what grows natively already. That’s a good place to start.

@AumsAcre It is an awkward balance indeed! Especially when your hands are dirty and want to change lenses etc. 😅 Keep at it, though. I've done it on and off over there years, and there's so much now that I wish I had filmed but was too caught up in the project at the time. My greenhouse for example... All organic Use this after the blossoms fall off Kelp Maxicrop Neptunes Harvest Fish 2-4-1 or Alaska Fish Fert 5-1-1 Blackstrap Molasses You should feed them right now Early to mid-spring, usually when the daffodils are in full bloom, we top-dress our blueberries with half to 1 pound Re-Vita Pro fertilizer (5-4-3), depending upon the size and age of the plant (3-5 years old get 0.5#, 6 yrs. and older get 1 pound, or roughly 3 cups). This is done by sprinkling the fertilizer over the growing zone of the plant (which for us is a 3’x3′ area).
