Excellent discussion. You are so right about things said in the sessessiobs being misconstrued, if I remember correctly a certain very good sessions book quoted a number of things from sessions that in black in white looked somewhat dark and disturbing. When we eventually heard these sessions it was clear that Elvis was joking around and there was no evidence of a problem. I guessing maybe the author didn’t pick up on the joke the first time. The other possibility that I hope isn’t the case is that the author used those quotes to paint a certain picture and at the time didn’t believe those tapes would ever be heard by anyone else.

I understand why...it has to be for the average fan too....but at the time I wanted everything.....as good as the 60's set is....why not slap on the religious songs...and then a complete soundtrack box.....I mean they fixed it years later...but I was rather disappointed at the time....especially how amazing the 50's set was. I ended up buying the movie tins filled with double feature cds.

To me this is the best FTD they have done so far. TTWII was how I became an Elvis fan. Those rehearsals are so magical. The band is kickin and raw. They sound great since everything is fresh. It’s crazy this thing sold out so quick and I heard about represses but never saw any. This would have been amazing to do just the audio release and especially on vinyl. I love it so much. Let me know if these are available anywhere for less than an arm and a leg.

Fantastic idea for a discussion. If you're contemplating making this a recurring series, (so many to choose from that could easily be applied to this format) might I recommend examining Elvis and Mac Davis' studio versions of "In the Ghetto" and "Memories". As editing practice/exercise, I actually took Mac's vocal and Elvis' early outtake vocals (when the key was the same as Mac's version) on "Ghetto" and made a fictional "on stage" duet between the two on a pitch changed backing track of the live version of the song, with audience applause and Elvis introducing Mac like he's bringing him out on stage with him.

Excellent insight and discussion gents. Picking up on misinterpreting things; "they" also did the same when [ironically] discussing the U.S. Male session, re. "Ah, you f*cked, U.S. Male". Somehow [and rather pretentiously] aligning it with his career at that stage, when it was Elvis merely having a go at himself when he made a mistake when the take broke down! Jeez! And how ironic that U.S. Male is nowhere to be found on the Sings Guitar Man FTD. Yet another incredibly dumb decision.
@Allen-vl7zq
@Allen-vl7zq 2 дня назад
Not really a dumb decision. There was method to FTD's decisions back in 2011. That 2-disc set purposely focused solely on 1966/'67 material. Two years later they released a disc for the 1967 Stay Away Joe songs, which included the additional January 1968 Stay Away Joe songs, along with "U.S. Male" & "Too Much Monkey Business" also record at that session. ~ Dave, the brand new GUITAR MAN Sessions box set is for you, my friend.
@-dave3577
@-dave3577 2 дня назад
@@Allen-vl7zq The '66 recordings have a totally different sound and feel to the '67 sessions and do not belong together [Elvis' voice is also VERY different]. So, yes, it was a stupid decision to pair them together. That they've now [rightly] combined the '67 and '68 sessions, it appears that they belatedly saw the error of their ways. But even then, not including the remaining October '67 Stay Away, Joe material [Stay Away and Goin' Home from January '68 are included!] alongside the rest of the sessions is yet another perplexing decision [with what remains, it would not be viable to issue them as a singular package]. Oh, and going by early reports, the Guitar Man sessions set has ONCE AGAIN been cut to ribbons by the producers who have been in the job for far too long.
@Allen-vl7zq
@Allen-vl7zq 2 дня назад
@@-dave3577 Dave, I really don't believe it was an error on their part. It's a business and RCA/BMG/SONY/FTD look for different ways & angles to repackage Elvis in as many various ways as they can. The 1999 cd titled "Tomorrow is a Long Time" combined tracks from 1966, 1967 and January 1968.

I assumed the audio on this was just a copy, with some sound tweaking, of the FTD set ? For decades, collectors like me only had this stuff on expensive bootlegs… so it’s good that it’s now widely available for fans worldwide, the more exposure for Elvis’ music, the better.

Hey guys this MRS release sounds a bit warmer than the FTD. Although the FTD was taken from the Master reels that doesn't mean this MRS is going to be a lower quality if they copied it bit by bit from the FTD. It should be the same quality minus whatever enhancements MRS did to the digital exact copy. It seems MRS may have used their LP Master for both releases as it is much warmer than the FTD and I prefer this release over all.

Hi guy's, thank you for another informative video feed. I do have the Summer Festival 1970 rehearsals MRS. As you say John its a very good listen. I also have the eight CD set and the two books that come with that set, again with superior sound and very good book presentation. I do have sitting in front of me a collection of Elvis CD's from a company called "Real Gone Music". The titles I have are. "USA Singles collection 1954-1962 plus bonus EP's", "Elvis Vol 2 Four Classic Albums Plus EP'S and singles", and "Elvis Presley at the Movies Volume 2". These sets while taken from his catalogue, are digital transfers, all the sets have 4 CD's. The sound is excellent across these sets. Excluding the Elvis sets, there are other fine CD's from this company ranging from "Doo Wop", to "Northern Soul" and Soul music in general. For example: "Soul 1961", & "Soul 1962". If you guy's like this type of music I can highly recommend the label "Real Gone Music" to you. I have no affiliation with that company at all, I am just passing on to you what I think are good sounding CD's that everyone should know about. I love how you are both keeping the Elvis Legacy Alive and are very knowledgeable regarding his back story and History. While I watch every episode, I do infrequently comment. I do have a favor to ask however. Is there any chance of getting Jerry Schilling on to your channel. I do not want to come across as rude, but Jerry is getting on in life, and it would be a shame if his words on Elvis are lost to the history you are both attempting to preserve. I do have "Me and a Guy Named Elvis" a great read and very funny at times: it reads like a PhD Thesis, and Jerry did eventually graduate to become that History Teacher, he always wanted to be. However, seeing and hearing "Number 6" on your channel would be fantastic for someone like myself here in Australia that may never get the chance to go to Memphis. Meanwhile, Stay safe and go well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion, and was nodding my head in agreement with most of what you three were saying. Jamie made some very perceptive remarks about how we as individuals are what we are as a result of the times and the culture we lived in. I was a teenager in the sixties in Australia, and every Elvis film that was released here was the highlight of our year. Elvis fans are all over the world, span three generations, have different religious beliefs, different tastes in music. No wonder there are so many variations of an "Elvis Fan", and the worst thing we can do is argue among ourselves. We need to present a united front to preserve the Elvis legacy, and the EAP society does this so well.
