Let's get crafty! This is the official Moth and Rust DIY channel where I explore and share a love of art, craft, sewing & textiles, knitting & yarn, gardening, nature, sustainability, and simple, slow living.
I love to create and hope I will help inspire you to do the same. Here you'll see tutorials, how-to videos, reviews & tours, and more.
I'm a sewist, knitter, pattern designer, gardener, and artist. I offer my one-of-a-kind and custom-made creations on various shops (linked on my profile here!). If are so inclined, visiting the shop is a great way to support this channel!
I had a blog dedicated specifically to craft, but as of summer 2024 I am moving my diy patterns to my new site, also linked on my profile here.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have questions or comments.
Thank you so much for watching!! It would really depend on the look you’re going for, but woven/non-stretch is best, and probably something that’s light or medium weight. I use an unbleached 100% cotton muslin.
Oh that makes me so happy! Thank you so much for the kind words. I am so glad it is easy to follow…(sometimes when I’m making these videos I really don’t know!) 😆
It really depends on the size of your bloomers! For smaller ones I use about 1.5 yards of 44" wide fabric, but for larger ones it can be 2 or 2.25 yards. I would recommend cutting your pattern from paper then laying it out to see what you will need. I hope this was helpful!
Thank you so much for the information! Because of your tips I was able to help our library's nonprofit group host a show in December and am planning for another show in May :) this has also inspired me to consider hosting a show just for fun, maybe sometime this fall. I'll have to look into some details. Thanks again tho, you rock!!
Oooh my goodness! This makes me so happy…I’m so glad you’re having fun doing shows and am so glad I could be helpful!! Thank you so much for sharing this…..YOU rock and have totally made my day! 💖
i love the design! do you use or a sewing machine? or are you able to hand sew the whole thing? im thinking of making it but i do not have a sewing machine.
Thank you so much for the kind comment, I’m so glad you like it! I used a sewing machine, but you could definitely sew it by hand. It would take a bit of time, but is small enough of a project that it probably wouldn’t be unreasonable.
Oooof!!! 😆 Oh my goodness....I keep thinking I'm going to do part 2, then get distracted, forget, and am reminded again....I've been doing this for years now, I guess!! (I know, it's bad!) This is something I really, truly want to try and get finished soon. Thank you so much for watching--and reminding me. I truly do appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed!!
I loved this! I would love for you to create one in the style like ‘Little Books, and Sigita.’ I could not for the life of me figure out how they made those? They both verbally tell how they made ‘em, but it’s not clear enough details to figure out the exact stitches used or how they made their awesome stems?? I just wish I could find help so I could make them. Neither one of them respond to their comments, so maybe I’ll get lucky and you’ll read this and check it out and maybe you could make a video I would be on cloud 10 if that happened. Nonetheless, I really appreciated the video you did post it was very detailed easy to follow and I had fun making the one you posted. Thanks again
Thank you so much for the kind comment, I’m so glad you enjoyed this! I can’t make any promises, but could you post a link to the ones you’re talking about? I would definitely give it a look and see if I could be helpful. Thank you again!!
I love your design, I’m not a perfectionist or have OCD, but it has bothered me from the beginning that the fabric wasn’t ironed. I’m sure it was the look you were going for, I find it strange that it bothered me, because I hate ironing.
When i First Shaw your video i thought that i had to pay for the Pattern but no it was for free and i think that that is Really awesome it also works really well thank you very much for this tutorial
This particular cotton is called Sea Island Brown and naturally grows as a brown cotton. There are also green and reddish cottons...they usually aren't grown on a wide scale which is why we're so used to seeing white all the time.
I want to thank you for your 2 videos! I have been doing craft shows for many, many years and I am now considering sponsoring one at my church. I have an excellent understanding from a Vendor perspective and your video helped to fill in lots of questions I had. Again, thank you from Aunt Nancy with Love.
Thank you so kindly for the sweet comment, Nancy!! I am so glad these were helpful. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions!
Your two videos were the ONLY videos I could find on how to host an art/craft show. I would love to pick your brain a little bit more if that would at all be possible. My venue is also my church and although I would never be a vendor again I am now in the position to host a show. Do you have a website? I think I saw where you have a vlog? Thanks again for the informative videos. I think you're a sister from different parents! lol
Thank you so much for the kind comment, and I'm so glad this could be of use to you! Please feel free to message me; you can find my site at mothandrustdiy.com. I really need to update some things on there, but if you go to the "about" page linked at top, you'll find a contact form at the bottom of the page, or you get my email address under my "about" section here on RU-vid. I would love to help more if I can!
Going into 2023 wth a multi-vendor website. Now to fill it up and figure out the best way to put it out there. In these days I have a passion to be creative.
I was contiplating how I could design my own hoodie, and started thinking making "bulk". Hey I pride myself that my relationship with my mother which had instilled the sewing skills...lol Think there is an easy way to make bulk t shirts and hoodies from a home/brand shop? I thinking in my mind Im complicating the idea to make rather from buying from a supplier. Whats your take on this? Hugs to ya! Thanks!
Thank you so much for the question!! I don't know if I would say there is an easy way to make your own hoodies...it's definitely some work to sew any garment. I know there are some good tutorials here on RU-vid (I haven't made one yet!) 🤣 If you're wanting to start a clothing brand, there are definitely special challenges when you're making the items yourself, but it's always worth experimenting, I think. I would say to start small and not invest too much--probably an Etsy shop would be the best, low-cost way to test the waters. If you're wanting to have designs on hoodies, though, I would suggest looking into a print-on-demand company like Redbubble or Printful. I hope this is helpful!
I made your hat using soft deer skin leather for the outside, flannel lining and muskrat fur. It is too big and I recognize that I failed to follow your instructions of a half inch seam when joining everything. But It's way too big and I am wondering if it is more than the 1/2" seam allowance that is an issue. How would I make my next hat smaller?
Oh no, I'm sorry it turned out too big! For reference, printed as is, this pattern should fit comfortably about 22". The only thing I can think of would be if you could print the pattern a slightly smaller percentage. I would say use something cheaper but bulky like fleece to make the second one, to see if it fits better, before moving on to more precious materials. If you can rip the seams on your existing one, you might be able to resew with a larger seam allowance and still have it work. I hope this is helpful!
@@MothandRustDIY I'm going to try it again with your direction of 1/2" seam allowance. I think that's the problem or you would have other questions about the sizing.
Thank you for the question, Dolores! Right now, it appears they only have an option to do this with 1 or 2 yard increments. You can view the various options here: www.spoonflower.com/fill-a-yard
