Although I really liked the movie, your criticism is dead on correct. About Greg, I really related to him in the book because he came across as a wide eyed innocent to people, but internally he was incredibly smart and self aware. For example, in the book he was friends with Tommy because he was so unique and interesting, but he knew that he was a strange goofball. In the movie, Greg simplemindedly seems to think that Tommy is some kind of genius seemingly unaware that he was nuts.

Not my text, but: The series was good under many aspects, but really exaggerated in their villanization of Dyatlov. He wasn’t entirely blameless, and perhaps was not the best boss to work with, but he wasn’t the arrogant asshole he’s been depicted as, either. The real Dyatlov tried to help others in the aftermath of the explosion. He personally went looking for Khodemchuk (quite the contrary of “fuck Khodemchuk”), and he twice ordered Toptunov to go home and later tried to send away Akimov as well, at a time when they both could have still saved themselves - they had spent most time in the control room and had not yet absorbed a fatal dose of radiation, in fact Dyatlov had received more radiation than them at that point. Which is why he became sick sooner and was carried away, while Akimov and Toptunov, still feeling well, decided that they should stay and help and went to the coolant valves, where they received their fatal dose. And the real Dyatlov never, ever tried to blame Akimov and Toptunov for what had happened. On the contrary, he even wrote Toptunov’s parents telling them that their son had fully done his duty and that the accusations that had been laid against him (Toptunov) were injust.

4:19 I’m always cautious to say that a person who isn’t moving too far outside their actual personality is great at acting. As an example, Michael Cera is really really funny and his performances are great, but because he is probably just taking who he is and cranking it to 11, I don’t really think this is far enough outside his comfort zone to consider his performance is great.

I hope to bring clarity to acting, by adding the following to someone who has never been in a movie: empathy. The greatest actors are able to actually feel what the character would be going through and more importantly being able to convey that to the audience. The better the actor the more believable the performance. You can actually see some actors that are trying to convince us that they are the character, and then you see the greats that actually become the character (Pesci in Goodfellas, Daniel de Lewis as Bill the butcher, Jack Nicholson has the joker come to mind). What’s more impressive is casting Directors being able to see the character that they are trying to bring to screen and decide if the actor or actress in front of them is able to embody that character and pull it off.

i feel like nolan specifically saying he is only mixing for the best theaters is ignorant of the fact that... most of his viewers won't be in the best theaters. tickets at such top-of-the-line theaters are expensive as hellll, so only mixing for those practically ensures that Most of your viewers aren't going to have a great experience.

I love "slow" cinema that takes time to let the atmosphere soak in. You see it a lot in Asian cinema. It makes sense too from an emotional standpoint, because The Curse kept me hypnotized as I followed every candid second of their lives and when things get awkward or uncomfortable, the intensity of it hit hard.

As a fan of the books, I think Villeneuve made the series even better. In the books it’s not really explained how the Fremen ride the sand worms. I think he surpassed anything I could’ve imagined while reading the books just by nailing the size and scale of the sand worms. I will nerd tf out over this movie until the day I die

I can hardly believe that Michael K. Williams is gone, and that his unforgettable, brilliant portrayal of Omar Little is over 20 years old. I mourn his untimely death, and can't shake the thought that the world is much, much poorer because we never got to see this incredible actor play Shakespeare's Richard III. I can almost hear him: "Now is the winter of our discontent. . ." RIP to a great artist.

Surfer of 32 years here. This scene captures better than any surf video what it feels like taking on big waves. The timing, focus, rapid decision making, sounds, physics, sense of scale and outright terror and elation - it’s all there. Talked to other surfers and they said same. These people really did the research. Great job breaking down the scene Thomas.

The scene was made with a stuntman actually running towards an explosion under a dune they've created... but the sandworm riding felt boring to me. Glad to hear other people's perspective. It's like VR making people queasy. The more you have a grip on reality, the more chances you have to get sick the first time around (that's your brain freaking out because something is not right). Sorry I didnt watch your video I gtg but Yea! Gladly putting it into perspective. ty

For me, there are two types of screenplay-acting (Dichotomy): 1 Natural/Authentic/Realistic acting (The most common "acting", where the actors create mind-physicality) 2 Mechanical/Controlled acting (Where the actors create and use only physicality, like in theatrical dancing or other physical-only performance). Stanislavskij said that "controlled acting" will never be able to project emotionally moving the audience, because it is IMPOSSIBLE to replicate nature (Unconscious mind, or natural acting).

The argument about artificial and "unrealistic" camera movement goes completely out of the window if you consider the fact that we have drones today. There is nothing artificial and unrealistic about it when it can be done for real.

In terms of Paul only just managing to ride the worm, I understood this to be because the worm was much bigger than they ever expected and this unexpectedly won over a lot of the doubters within the group.

at 4:00 minutes the scene is already disturbing before the gun shot. The coat she tries on is the clothes of a prisoner - hinting at the wealthy life that some of them had before. That's why she also finds a ring in it and just puts it aside like it's not a bit deal. She knows its all "leftovers".

One of the things I loved about these two movies is how the score "codes" the scenes with Paul. The score that kicks in at 10:50 is the one I call "The Monster", it represents the Mahdi, the Kwisatz Haderach, and the Lisan-al-Gaib. Paul is many things during these movies: among them; a boy who gets lost on a strange world and falls in love, the dutiful son of a Great House, and also the inevitable, monstrous, super-bering that will wield prophecy to seek revenge and unite humanity under an iron fist. If you listen closely in the scenes with Paul on screen, you can identify who is present by the score.

Chani’s relief is the weak part of the whole scene. Her reaction feels so out of character. Just a slight tweak of her reaction and it would have been better. There has to be a better take of her reaction. Otherwise, a masterpiece of a scene. They played the whole scene in full as a teaser after Dune Part 1 came back in theaters prior to Dune 2. Wish i never saw that teaser. It was still absolutely incredible as a teaser, but would have been even better seeing it for the first time actually in the movie. That teaser maximized my hype. But overall Dune Part 2 feel slightly short as a whole. I have to see it again. Dune Part 1 got better on rewatches. Hopefully Dune Part 2 does also.

The more I watch Isle of Dogs, the more I feel like it's a meta commentary on communication, self-expression and what can be lost in translation. It's exemplified by the title itself. "Isle of Dogs" can be heard as "I Love Dogs" but this double meaning only works in English. I can understand how this can be seen as Anglo-centric, but I don't think that should be equated with cultural appropriation as many have. All in all it's still a brilliant film.
