The fire was a grain elevator at lapointe pier in 1958, described in the news at that time as the worst waterfront fire in the city’s history

I was here in Vancouver in 1984 September and wow it was so much better back then. God now it's junkies everywhere, mental heads, and dumb drivers. All you meet is ugly people that aren't your type, and that you have no interest in. When it was mostly run by British settlers it was well organized and run by strict authorities, no homeless bumbs or drug addicts, rent was dirt cheap, food was really good, and life itself was more than just good it was awesome!!! Now oh god, it's all gone to shit. Hate it here.🤨🤔😌😌😌

Why do these near sepia tones in this film exactly match my visual memory of what these streets looked like circa 1970-1976. Uncanny!🤔

These were the golden years of western society. Sure there were problems. But there were fewer people, everything looked like it was built to last. The people looked better. What a world we live in now. Born in 1976 and always lived here in Vancouver. The 1990s were the peak. Its been downhill since then. I will be leaving in a year or two. The city is unlivable now.

I remember that "Mall" sign and how great it was to be able to walk everywhere without cars around. As a kid at that time, it was fabulous.

It was, indeed, the same owners. My father and his brothers founded Mr. Jake's. Two of my cousins and I worked in the restaurants as well. It was a great concept and one of the most successful chain restaurants in BC history. I now own the name and may resurrect Jake's one day. Thx for the memories.

This is so nice. I was only a year old then. It would be nice if it was today. Our country never had a jack arse in Ottawa who filled our country with hostile incompatibles who hate us! There wasn't layer's of drug addicts on Hastings street and Main area. If that happened today they would round them all up and dump them in the ocean instead of buying them free drugs with taxpayer money! All of that disgusting mess is such a huge social betrayal! It is all a result of the gov't spending millions in propaganda to get rid of God, and family, as our moral foundation in society! It would be nice if it could all be a bad dream but sadly with all trudeau's foreigners maligning our communities we have to stay awake and be alert for the inevitable sons of Cain to make their move! Pray for our world. Amen

Wow!! I am amazed by how clean and tidy the street is. I lived at Queen St North in Kitchener, 20 years ago! Always saddens me how once great city streets were allowed to rot away but I was there a year ago and it looks like the street is coming back to life.

Progressive banning vehicle traffic , save trolley buses, from King Street in 1967. Must have been a centennial year only thing though, since as a kid walking those sidewalks in the early seventies it was just like any other street, ie back to normal traffic with parking curb side. Neat seeing the old Eaton’s store again. Odeon theatre where dad took us to see the Poseidon Adventure.

I miss the way the city was back then! My father worked for B.C. Hydro in that building, he was on the crew that installed the B.C. Hydro insignia and the 12 o'clock "Oh Canada" horns when the building was built. He worked for B.C. Electric/B.C. Hydro for 43 years and retired in 1986.

Ah Ken, you're 10 years early with your criticism. Old Ronnie (& Thatcher) didn't really show up until the following 80's. However, prior to their administrations the Hayek & Friedman philosophies were being well absorbed by all those upcoming capitalist raiders soon to enter that subseqent decade. 😮

Great show and theme I grew up watching this and shows like it, but it's funny how it follows the same tropes of the era. Environmentalist propaganda always vilified anyone who was a businessman capitalist as an evil person who was hell bent on destroying planet earth, and it was up to "the good guys" and the children to educate them and teach them the error of their ways. Just like the cartoon captain planet. Gets a little preachy and repetative.
