When the snow crystallizes and has the consistency of salt that’s when it gets hard on the skidder. Even with chains, when it’s deep enough and doesn’t pack down, you start to hop and that’s when it can get really expensive.

There’s no replacement for displacement when it comes to milling with a saw. Skip tooth chain also. Need to keep those rpm’s up.
@garymcmullin2292

the winch is helpful, I first became aware of that set up in a book written by Will Maloof, Chainsaw Lumbermaking. It would also be helpful to have a weight on the mill platform to keep the saw down flat and not let it tend to rise up. Your power head is not big enough, the saw is constantly losing speed. The cut will go better if you angle the approach of the chain some, that way you are not cutting straight into end grain and to do that you need smaller log diameter or a longer bar which of course leads to bigger power head. A chainsaw mill will wear you out, I ran one back in the 80's and early 90's, but they do have a certain versatility that is appealing. Word of advice, get the biggest saw you can find, even for small logs , the saw will not work so hard and your work will be easier, it is taxing to have to nurse an under powered mill through the wood.
@retrologging
@retrologging 6 месяцев назад
What size of saw would you recommend?
@Thewoodsman75
@Thewoodsman75 6 месяцев назад
Need 70cc or bigger. Preferably the 565 from husquevarna. Has lots of low end torque which you want when chainsaw milling.Also want a saw with at least a 24inch bar. A good ripping chain helps too. Also keep the winch parallel with the log that way it will pull straight through the log.

You know I am amazaed at these old machines and how universal they are. They can obviously skid a lot of wood, but they can break trail, clear land etc. Our best equipment purchase to date. Keep me posted or @ me when you complete a video segment on this.

Don't be to quick to turn that rim into a fire pit just yet have someone with a plasma cutter cut that center ring out, you can save it then have it rewelded into another rim if need be even if that rim has a different bolt pattern from a different machine so long as the rim is the same size and style; you can change out the center's and your good to go. Lot's of people have done this if you can't find an exact match, you got lucky finding another rim but it wouldn't hurt to think ahead could happen again. Finding part's for many of these old machine's is getting hard even though they made a lot of them, they have been out of production a long while so used part's are picked clean long ago. Unfortunately many more that where abandoned in back 40's ended up going to the shredder thanks to scrapper's.

yes mate, i do like your new fire pit. 🤣 The older machines last longer, however the parts also get rarer, and harder to find. Might be worthwhile to check all the other rims as well. Preventative maintenance, always beats broken maintenance.

There is a chance that chloride was used a a traction enhancer at sometime in the past. It's very corrosive on the rims if the solution happened to leak out of the tube.

I’ve remanufactured many parts the best advice I can give for finding old parts is contacts I’ve kept many peoples numbers incase I need something down the road also don’t be afraid to ask “do you know who might have one of these” many companies will try and help their competitors with the thought that they will return the favour down the road

Yes. Over inflation. Best to check the other three. Should be able to release the air pressure….porter power it back in and weld it.
@StuInTheSticks
@StuInTheSticks 10 месяцев назад
Be sure to check your tire air pressure anytime you have someone else change a tire for you. look's like a new/fairly new tire, if you had it done at a tire shop and it was worked on by someone not used to working with off road tire's they can overinflate them it happens more often then you would think. You will get a rupture/burst tire or a rim can and will split like yours did. 12-16 psi max for most large off road tire's any more and they become rolling bomb's. Skidder rims are pretty tough unless they are rusted through but yours looks pretty good yet anyways something to check into, take care.
