You'd need to get up before sunrise. That's when there's good color in the sky.

From my own experience, i honestly think you're not enjoying the cycle as much as you could by focusing too much on the photos etc. Just stick with a small compact camera and 2 batteries and maybe an action camera on the handle bar. It's leaving you time to enjoy the scenery and the ride
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel 8 месяцев назад
I appreciate you sharing your perspective. I've experimented over the years on various trips using different cameras, but I find action cameras frustrating and the quality lacking in most point and shoots or they are missing things that frustrate me (I knew from biking experience that my Ricoh GRIII would not be able to get the shots I wanted, and my RX100 wouldn't be the quality I wanted. I've shot entire trips on both in the past and once with just a cell phone in order to be able to do a presentation on the topic). It's probably because I make my living doing landscape photography and teaching photo workshops, but also because photography has been part of my life and adventures for over 30 years. I personally find that photography increases my enjoyment when on trips. But keep in mind that photography was and is a small part of an adventure like this. Maybe on average a minute or so per hour. So even if it was preventing me from enjoying cycling, which it is not, it would only represent 1% of the time on the trip. A photo that I made on this trip has already sold enough prints that I paid for the trip. Plus I wasn't sure if I'd write a magazine article about the trip, so I wanted a good camera to document the trip for that. I'm also glad that I had the camera because I'll be presenting this trip as a slideshow and speaking on the trip. All that stuff makes having a camera more enjoyable than not. But ultimately photography is part of my life and I enjoy it and my trips would feel like they were missing something without it. I absolutely understand that it may be different for you and I support you 100% in riding your own ride in your own way.

Why dont you just pump with your lungs

You end up getting more moisture inside the pad when doing it that way. It's also more work than using the pump bag.

@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel 10 месяцев назад
@@BikepackingI've tried blowing these things up and I don't care to do it. For me, it isn't fun. I personally find it easier to use the pump bag, and even easier to use an electric device. For me, I find the latter nice when I'm setting up the tent and inflating my family's pads in addition to mine. It saves time. On this trip, I would have brought an electric pump prototype inflation device that I was testing, but there was an issue with it. Instead, I brought the pump bag, which came with the pad. I actually hadn't used this specific pump bag before, but I have used multiple pump bags and other pump devices in the past for various sleeping pads. I've been lucky to be able to test many different pads over the years. I did like the Nemo pump bag better than some others that I've used. Now that I have a working production version of the electric pump I used, I'll likely use it on future trips.

Thanks for this. I do a fair amount of canoe tripping and I have been getting back into photography. That bag looks great and I am inclined to buy one. But, I also do some trips, mostly day trips, in a sea kayak with 8.5" opening hatches. I'd like to carry one body with an L bracket and two lenses for kayak day trips. Is there a similar bag that will fit in my sea kayak and carry this smaller load?
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel Год назад
They make two versions of this duffle. This is the larger one. The smaller one can be forced into a day hatch, but I wouldn't do that. Instead buy a SealLine 5 liter dry bag for your camera and pad it with an old foam sleeping pad.

I am surprised to learn that the GR iii shows a distinct drop-off in IQ after f/5.6. I would definitely recommend trying some shots at f/5.6 and f/8 for landscapes.
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel Год назад
It's all about the compromises that you want to make. There's a trade-off in sharpness due to diffraction plus not shooting at the sharpest aperture and depth of field. F/11 gets you more depth of field but it may not be as sharp as f/5.6 or f/8. Depending on your priorities, you may make different decisions than I do.

It’s a shame you didn’t use snap focus as that allows you to set the hyper focal distance rather than guesstimating on an object as you do with all other auto-focus cameras. You can get an ultra-wide 21mm equivalent lens as well. Anyway, I’m glad you also did a side-by-side comparison as you’re never going to get best results doing something on a piece of kit for the first time. Thanks for the video though, it’s great to see the Ricoh being used off the street too 😊
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel 2 года назад
Snap focus isn't going to be as accurate as finding a focus point for hyperfocal distance in landscape photography. There just aren't enough snap focus settings. It would probably be fine depending on how close the foreground is. I considered the 21mm when I got the camera years ago, but didn't think I'd use it for landscape photos. I thought making the video would be fun and I haven't used the Ricoh with a tripod since I made the video. For me, the 21mm wouldn't likely be used, but if someone really wanted to use it for landscape photography, it may be a good purchase.
@PatBloomfield
@PatBloomfield 2 года назад
@@BryanHansel Interesting, I guess it's whatever you feel comfortable with. With Snap Focus set to 2.5m at f/8 gives a DoF from 1.15m to infinity, although I use f/11 as I have found that it is slightly sharper 🙂 Most people have gotten used to focusing on an object now, but for me, snap focus is one of the great benefits of the Ricoh system.
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel 2 года назад
@@PatBloomfield If I remember right, the foreground was about 2 feet away in this shot, so the 2.5m Snap Focus wouldn't have worked. I use Snap Focus when I'm using the camera how I normally use it, but for landscape photography I like to be exact in how I shoot. It is a great feature and with such a slow focus system, it has allowed me to get shots where its normal system would fail. It's one of my favorite cameras for sure.

𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗽 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 The United Nations recently celebrated the International Mother Earth Day as a reminder to protect the environment. Heat waves, droughts, fires and heavy rains that cause severe flooding have become more frequent in many parts of the world due to climate change, which affects the entire worldwide population. The Earth is facing a “triple planetary crisis,” warn UN officials. Climate disruption, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste are the main areas of concern regarding the current state of the environment. This year, the Earth Day’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet,” so what would humanity's best investment for the planet be? We need to start by cleaning up the planet. There is no place on Earth where the air and water are clean, and that's a real problem. In theory, tackling this issue should be our priority when it comes to taking action to improve the dismal state of our planet. But let’s not fool ourselves. Such a plan alone will solve nothing. It will only help the international organizations to justify their own existence. They tick off "done" to raise as much money as they want, and that's it. If we do not improve relations between us, we will not be able to achieve the great and ambitious improvement in nature that we want and need to attain globally. We will never achieve a good result through bureaucratic, mechanical measures. There are a lot of people sitting in their comfortable offices profiting from the environmental crisis and demanding money and respect. They keep flying from one end of the world to the other on all kinds of missions to make a lot of noise with what they are "doing" and which everyone "needs to hear" as if that alone means something is happening, but in practice we see no real progress. The Earth must also be cleansed of them, of these people who engage in useless campaigns that only cause harm because they mislead the world, leading it away from the real solution. The cleaning of the planet should start inside out. If we do not clean the planet from within, and continue with our reckless behavior and the selfish nature of our hearts as before, nothing will change for the better. The immense sums invested in environmental initiatives should be directed to spreading an educational process aimed at improving the way we relate to each other. Humans are the most developed and influential factors of all of nature's levels: still, vegetative, animate and human. Since we occupy the highest level in nature, positively affecting the environment, the climate, and nature in general can be achieved by reaching positive relations among us. On the contrary, by letting our divisive drives tear apart human relations, we also destroy our surrounding environment, the very nature that our lives depend on. The more we humans are able to correct ourselves by changing our divisive attitudes toward each other into positive attitudes of mutual support, encouragement, mutual responsibility, and reciprocal concern, the more we will receive positive feedback from nature. And the more we develop without making this necessary correction, the more negative feedback we will receive from nature, as we have experienced in the form of natural disasters, pandemics.
