Join me for a winter sunset shoot on Lake Superior.
Want to get the filters that I used? Buy direct from Singh-Ray and use to code "thathansel" to save 10%. singh-ray.com/ I'm a Singh-Ray ambassador and use their filters for all my shots, plus if you use thathansel code I make a commission and you save 10%.
I used a DJI Osmo Action camera to shoot this video to see what it would be like. It was really easy to shoot the video, but maybe the video work isn't as good as my other cameras. Also, interesting colors DJI. Interesting colors.
Part of a five video series made with funding from a Emergency Working Artist Project Grant provided by the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.

I need to gather enough courage to attend your Jan/Feb workshop next year.

As long as you have warm enough clothing, it's nice to be out in those temps.

Great video, Bryan. Thanks. I'm headed to the shore next week, hope to find some good places to shoot.

I'm surprised there is so much open water so close to shore with the recent cold snap.

It's pretty typical for this time of year. There's so much mass in the water that it takes a long time to cool it down. I've seen some ice in mornings but not much, yet. I hoping we get some soon.

Watch your step!!! What are your thoughts on the Nisi system holder? Pros/cons?

Pros: It fits the Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8 S lens. It's an interesting attachment system that uses the lens hood attachment. I like the way that the holder locks onto the adapter ring. It's an elegant solution. If you use Nisi holders, the company says the holder will work with their other adapter rings. I haven't bought an 82mm adapter ring to test this out. Cons: The filter in the front slot is only held in place by four small tabs. When putting the filter into the slot, it typically pops out before reaching the bottom tabs. That leaves the top of the filter held by the filter holder but not the bottom. It takes a lot of babysitting to get it to go into the holder correctly. I've used about two handfuls of different filter holders and have seen many more on my workshops, and I've never seen a filter that has this defect. It seems like there is some vignetting, but I haven't experimented enough to know for sure. I should do tests. I've been meaning to either 3d print or make a replacement front filter holder to see if that would fix the problem.

@@BryanHansel Thanks. It appears that particular lens is quite a challenge to engineer a holder for. Hopefully you can review Nisi holders in one of your upcoming newsletters.

@@toniocastelli9434 I think I'd need to buy their 82mm adapter before I could feel good about reviewing it. I've talked to students who have Nisi holders and they have the same issues with the front slots. If that problem was fixed, it would likely be my favorite holder of the moment.

what do you use to do the video of yourself with? Are you alone or with a partner?

I used a DJI Osmo Action for this video. I'm not sure I'll use it again, but it was handy. I usually use a Nikon Z6 or Z50. I'm by myself when filming these. I think I'd feel too goofy having someone film me. 🙂
