The Horti-Culturalists is a channel dedicated to growing unusual and rare plants, trees and shrubs in an outdoor garden setting, visits to interesting rare and unusual plant gardens and 'how to' lessons on various gardening techniques that are a little more advanced!
Stephen Ryan is a horticulturalist, owner of Dicksonia Rare Plants nursery , a garden consultant and former host of the TV program Gardening Australia. Matthew Lucas is an amateur who knows nothing but tries to keep up!
Together they create videos based in Stephen's Macedon garden in Victoria, Australia, where the climate is cool Mediterranean: cold wet winters and warm/hot dry summers occasional light frosts and wild parrots! They also visit other interesting gardens and specialist growers.
Videos are posted once a week and please leave a question or tell the Horti-Culturalists what you might want them to cover!

Every year I try to grow daffodils in pots but have very little success. This year I planted approx 100 different varieties and have had maybe 15 flowers. I use new good quality potting mix. This year has been the worst with many flower buds breaking through the surface without leaves and on stems that are maybe 10 cms. I buy bulbs from a reputable grower in Victoria. I am about ready to give up. What am I doing wrong? I live in Adelaide on the plains around half an hour from the city.
@thehorti-culturalists
@thehorti-culturalists День назад
I feel that they are always better in the ground although it is unusual for them not to flower well the first year as the flowers are usually already in place. Silly questions but are you planting them right way up, at the appropriate depth, is your water acid or alkaline they don't like lime. Regards Stephen
@LouiseMather-ul3jn
@LouiseMather-ul3jn День назад
@@thehorti-culturalists wow thank you for such a fast reply. No definitely the correct way up, I understand why you asked that though. I imagine our water would be alkaline. I contacted the company I purchased the bulbs from and sent them photos they said it looked like herbicide damage but I don’t use herbicides. The leaves came through brown and deformed. A great many of the ills sent up good long foliage but no flowers. Unfortunately I don’t have a space to plant them in the ground.

Adelaide might be just a bit too warm for many daffodils. Do you see other people growing them successfully? You could chill the bulbs for a few months before planting in winter or look online for southern species and hybrids that do well in USDA hardniess zone 10 like Tazettas. You might miss out on some types of daffodils where you live, but there are lots of awesome winter-growing bulbs from South Africa, Chile and the southern Mediterranean basin for you to choose from.

Any advice on tackling pine sawfly? It's a complete nuisance here in NW UK. I know encouraging garden birds will help somewhat by eating the caterpillars, but we've also got sparrowhawks nesting each year, so the garden birds don't hang around too long! I try to clear away any dropped larvae from the leaf litter (pine litter?) under the tree, but to no avail. Any advice gratefully received. Ps. I don't use insecticides in my garden.

Thank you and God bless you for sharing your knowledge and love of these exquisite aussie plants and trees! We live in the wimmera and have just been given permission from the landlord to grow natives in the yard (it is ugly and desolate at the moment and we would love to transform it into a beautiful space and sanctuary for the beautiful native birdlife and the humans that live corporately here - we have crested pigeons, eastern & crimson rosellas, red rumps, rainbow lorikeets, wattlebirds and the gorgeous little honeyeaters, pied currawongs and willie wagtails visiting besides some introduced species like blackbirds, sparrows and starlings) my daughter and I have absolutely no idea how to go about growing these marvelleous natives but your informative video has given us some food for thought as to what we could add to our ideas list of what we could plant to grow as creepers on things or around the birdbath. 😊 it is a very daunting task to establish a garden here when the soil is terrible and like clay- in winter if you walk on a bare patch of dirt it glues to the bottom of your shoes in big clumps and is quite a challenge to scrape back off (we joke that you could dig up bits of it and mould it into cups and pots 😂) in summer the ground dries out and cracks - the cracks can be so significant you could accidentally step into it and brake your ankle or your leg! (The movement in the ground here wrecks the houses causing significant damage)

A question for Stephen’s Monday shorts, my parents who live in the midland in the UK have a mature variegated maple whose leaves have started to go brown at the edges and it’s starting to lose its leaves in late July early August. The summer has been quite dry though not super hot but the spring was very wet. Can you tell what is causing this to happen?
@thehorti-culturalists
@thehorti-culturalists 6 дней назад
It could in fact be a combination as too wet in spring can kill feeder roots with too dry later meaning the tree is less capable of taking up water. Regards Stephen

I adore Grevillea Robusta. Planted 5 in my old garden on a rural property. Yes, they drop leaves in late spring, then grow new leaves and flowers, but you don't need to worry about raking up. Simply mow over the fallen leaves and they mulch up to nothing and feed the tree.

I have a big old grevilia robusta in my yard and I love it. I quite enjoyed this episode because I'm right in the middle of creating my own native garden section in my yard and you showcased some plants I've never heard of, one of which I really must try to get for my garden as it would be ideal. Would you gentlemen consider the idea of one day doing a video about Aussie native herbaceous plants? Aussie shrubs are spectacular, but most take up a lot of space and they aren't too terribly hard to find videos and information about, but there isn't so much about the smaller herbaceous plants that can fit in a pot plant or a little bare pocket of a small garden besides darling and sturt peas, strawflowers, native violet, and billy buttons, but there surely has to be more to it than that?
