My late brother Joe and I watched this show religiously back in the day. He’s been gone forty years now and this brings back great memories. Thanks so much for sharing this classic comedy game show!
I think the 11 minute Roscoe Definition clip with Audrey Landers that’s on RU-vid is the earliest footage out there of the show. It is claimed to be from 1979 in the comments and does have the model dancing in the intro
I forgot about that clip! I have seen it before. I do have five master tape episodes from Season 6 (1978/1979) but I haven't digitized yet... they are on two-inch tape (which is a rare machine to find to digitize these days). These two-inch episodes would be the oldest know masters of Definition around. Our digitized masters start from Season 7 Episode 30.
22:35; This might be the only version of LMAD from 1963 to 1986 to have a copyright on-screen, though it was only for the later episodes. I wonder if it was due to the legal issues Catalena was facing around this time.
The story I heard was the mechanic filed a lien on the show, it couldn't go to air until he got paid. Alex wanted to do the same, but after he consulted a lawyer, he realized he didn't have that kind of leverage.

Dave is a boss at hosting! An obvious choice to lead while Jim was recording the "Twisters" pilot. If you close your eyes, Dave sounds a lot like another excellent host (still with us), Jim Peck.
That doesn't surprise me. Headline Hunters he was pretty much co-hosting with Jim. In fact, I always felt like Dave was doing more of the hosting work there.
@aaronbruceladner1983 For a long time too he also had Headline Hunters, so 3 at once and flying back and forth across the border. I guess he knew it wasn't going to last forever take the work as long as you are physically able to do so.
I was right on my prediction as the Twisters pilot was recorded two days before. Shortly after Jim once again frequently flew back and forth LA and Toronto when Sale of the Century was picked up by NBC. Both Sale and Definition ended in March 1989
I wonder how often Dave actually did appear on camera while this show was on? The only people that probably did were those who saw his weather forecasts on the CFTO news in Toronto.
Dave hosted for a week (or two) once when Jim Perry wasn't available to come to Toronto. He did a great job hosting! I will post a clip of that from the library soon!
@BonusRoundCanada It certainly does sound interesting as to how he did in front of the camera, so I can't wait to see it.🙂 It must have been from a time when Jim was busy with a show in California, depending on when the clip is from.
I think Monty Hall had to step in and make sure they actually did receive them. Things didn't get much better for Catalena, as they were sued for $200K by Hatos-Hall. I think it had something to do with a payment owed to them. It could partially explain why "Pitfall" was even worse once that went into production.
Odd that Jim says the car at the end of the tournament was "the biggest prize ever given away in Canadian game show history." In the US, Barker's TPIR (among others) was giving away cars every day and even Cullen's TPIR in black and white gave away much larger prizes like airplanes. On a side note, do you know what episode this is? I'd like to watch the following episodes with my subscription to see the rest of the tournament.
Episode 9-121. The tournament episodes all start around episode 120 of a 130 episode season. But we've found that not all the tournament episodes were saved in the archives.
