My name is Luke and I am a hobbyist breeder of various Australian reptiles. I focus on keeping animals in more natural style habitats. I am based in Sydney, Australia. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram at Beaches Scaly Beasts!
I feel like this is a stupid question but I’m super paranoid about the cleanup bugs getting out of the enclosure, especially since it’s in my bedroom. I’ve got the same type of enclosure and substrates probably about the same height as you’ve got. Is this a stupid thing to be worried about? Was recommended this kit for my mags new enclosure, found this looking for a tutorial, thank you for the instructions
Hi Kari, I haven’t had any issues with clean up crew trying to escape really. I find they tend to want to stay reasonably hidden and secure. Crickets or roaches etc are a different story though.
I think there was someone in particular that worked with them for decades over there but after he passed they disappeared from the hobby if I’m not mistaken? Hopefully someone picks up the reigns with them.
I am looking to set something up for my 3 enclosures for 3 leopard geckos but after going through the grid connect website, I am unsure of what products I should be getting for them. I have 3 separate light fixtures that have 2 plugs each - one for daytime lights and one for nighttime lights on each fixture, I do not have any humidifiers but usually just spray some water in their tanks when humidity is too low. Do you recommend specific products from grid connect to do this?
A standard 4 point board would work and you can just use a small powerboard attached to each grid connect socket. That’s what I do for each channel of light (uvb/heat/led) to run them at different times.
Beautiful snakes, and a bittersweet video for me as I lost my sorong GTP just over two years ago to a RI, which I’m still devastated about. Kind of a long story, and I feel guilty as I hadn’t been spraying his Viv that often, maybe twice a week, though I’ve heard some keepers say you shouldn’t spray the enclosures, so it’s a bit confusing to know what’s best. I’d love another, but the thought of it happening again really puts me off. Maybe one day.
@BeachesScalyBeasts yer not sure it's only the rough-scaled and none of my other snakes, but it only seems to be her tail tip or the last 3rd of the body and only in winter
Congrats! I’ve got no crazy tips. I’ve just been raising them like all other odatria. In tubs with heat and uv. Shallow water dish and low hides. Dusted woodies and crickets etc.
100%! Man I’m working on my cages for the frog project and I honestly can say I’m over building mock rock lol. My place is a mess! Looking forward to the end result through.
We got Spotted marsh frogs and once I got my second paludarium up & running I’m going to get my licence and try sourcing Dainty’s as well, they are my fave! But why oh why is the marcgravia so stupidly expensive for a tiny strand in Australia?! It’s mad. Hopefully yours will grow in abundance🤞
We picked up a wild olive that had been clipped by a car when I lived in the NT many moons ago. She was a big girl at 3 metres and we named her Cuddles because she liked to squeeze us. She was the sweetest snake and never even thought about striking at us. She handled like a well loved pet but we were in the middle of nowhere when we found her so she couldn’t have been. I would love another one day.
@@BeachesScalyBeasts I have many snake stories to tell 🤣. I should probably clarify for the comment readers that my partner did reptile rescue and rehab. Don’t muck with wild snakes kids!
Looking good, I have a similar plan in my head floating around. I’m actually been wanting to focus on frogs and step back from keeping other reptiles but was in the same boat as you in nsw and found it hard to easily find local breeders to purchase from. Its good to see that frogs are looking at becoming more popular and after hearing about Mac’s collection and availability in the hobby expanding it’s giving me more drive to start putting together the empty tanks currently waiting as part of my frog keeping project. I’m sure my current frogs that are sitting in their “temporary” lol enclosures would love to see it get started so I’ll definitely be using this series as inspiration when designing mine so keep up the great work!!
So the reason you don’t see a lot of frogs in Australia are as follows: WA can’t import any frogs from interstate and can only have local species NSW shops can not sell them, keeper’s / breeders can not advertise them for sale. Laws for keeping are complicated VIC can have a reasonable number of species, but they are on two tiers and a large number of common popular ones sit on advanced and can not be sold by shops SA have a much more open policy from what I gather ACT from what I’ve heard is a free for all NT unsure Tasmania unsure but expect they bias towards local species Policies of state and local, governments are destroying local habitat yet keeping is frowned Upon and yet could ultimately be the best way to ensure the survival of some species. QLD failures in bio security and managing invasive species with the cane toad and now fire and electric ants is having a devastating impact on wild species. Magnificent frogs in the Kimberly are now being impacted by the cane toad through a lung disease. A number of keepers not collectors in Victoria are actively working together to gather from collections being shut down across Australia hard to find species in the hobby to ensure their survival for us all to enjoy. These have included five years gathering enough animals to final breed Great Barreds, Leaf Green tree frogs, Blue Mountains, Southern Stoney Creeks, and a number of other projects. Reptile and “Amphibian” expos are not an easy option to get stalls in some states due to the organisations who run them and then general public often don’t purchase as they don’t have the relevant licenses required. A hobby at risk of disappearing along with many species. Enjoy the Great Barreds Corey sent you, a project 5 years in the making.
@@BeachesScalyBeasts they are awesome frogs. Love the way they sit up and the amazing colouration. Don’t think they will be breed again for many years. Cost a huge amount in infrastructure to house and grow the tadpoles due to number of litres per tadpole required and are not proving popular to sell.
@@BeachesScalyBeasts i use to have a strawberry pinapple albino pacman frog but died was ill when i got it had mbd took me ages to get me money back only had it 3 days was gutted and use to have a golden albino african short clawed frog got sold faulty fliter and it passed so decided not to keep frogs any more still love them tho
Awsome frog shed, thats cool idea. Enclosures ended up looking very slick. Especially when those plants grow. Happy little froggies. How do you keep heat in a frog cage , heat light, heat mat, or heated water? My guy keeps hiding cause its getting chilly.
Thanks mate! In this case I’m kinda bumping the ambient up in the shed with some cords and heat panels. That being said over my mag tree frog inside I use a small wattage heat light.
Hey mate, are the frogs hibernating now in winter out in the shed? I got 3 x Perons in a tank in the garage and I have the UV LED bar and a heat light on during the day to keep it natural and try to warm the tank for them to come out at night and only 1 comes out occasionally the other 2 are hibernating
Great video, what wattage lamps are using in the monitor enclosures 120 x120x60’s? I live on the Gold Coast and have use to heat sources 2 x 150w halogens in winter and only get 24 degrees at the bottom so I am trying to work out how you can can get 28 in the rest of the enclosure with only one heat source with the same enclosure? Great channel I have learnt a lot.
Thanks mate. They are usually 75 or 100 watts. Depending on the time of the year. Keep in mind with the amount of enclosures in a small room it holds heat very well. Also our home is well insulated. Barely drops below 20c in this room on a cold winters day. If I added more heat I’d cook the lizards.
Ok that makes sense being insulated then, I do get a coastal breeze everyday up here. Obviously I have the opposite effect in summer having to half the wattage or the dimmer turns them off on the scorching days. Thanks again for all your great vids and experience with multiple reptiles, may have to get me a gillens monitor later this year too
Would you help me setup my kimberley rock encloser what size should I get what type of lights and heat and what are rocks or tree or branches to get ??; you would be awesome
Hi mate, light wise make sure you do your research and get a decent output uvb t5 tube. Heating will depending on where you live and size of enclosure and your home temperature. Wood I tend to use a lot of gum tree branches. Otherwise I’d say keep checking out peoples enclosures for inspiration to make your own.
He's a beautiful boy! I'm anxious to see how he grows and thrives! I think you will love it too! If you've never worn foam earplugs, you should try them! I wore them for about 10 years and never had any problems. I've since stopped using them due to living environment changes, but if I have a night I just can't block things out...they are magical!
i know this is very off topic but ive been wondering for ages and theres not really alot written about it but is safe to cohabitate gtb's from the same clutch because ive seen youve done it but not anyone else
