Thanks I've made one and it turned out just right by following your detail blog.

Drywall screws, the duct tape of woodworking… 🤣🤣🤣 awesome job sir! One question, why didn’t you make it so the canvas is flush with the box when stored? Also you installed the T-nut upside down… but otherwise amazing work 😁😁😁

Super! best design i have seen. the only thing is that i think the t-nut would be stronger if it came from the backside of the wood.

What are the dimensions for the depth of the box? I imagine enough to make room for the lid and two paintings but I was wondering if you can share that

the old magnetic ballasts only hum when they have been overheated or have a ton of hours on them, they also do not flicker unless the tubes are EOL. magnetic ballasts when in good condition last a very long time, and the lamps last longer on them as well because they heat the cathode instead of just sending a blast through them. i have fixtures from the early 50s with the original ballasts that work just fine and don't hum unless you put your ear up to them. and t12 lamps are no dimmer than the t8 lamps, low power factor ballasts have lower light output and alot of the cheap magnetic ballasts are. if you have a proper high power factor magnetic ballast on t12 lamps it is just as bright, it may not look it when you look directly at them due to the surface area. an electronic ballast burns out the tubes quicker and the ballasts do not last as long as well. if you have a fixture with an existing magnetic ballast and t12 lamps in good working order do not change it out to electronic because the magnetic ballasts can basically last forever as long as you dont overheat them by leaving them running with dead lamps installed.

My first thought when I saw the box was how thick it is. Seems like it would be heavy to carry around.

It seems like regular use on a tripod would work the T-nut loose by pulling it back out of the hole. Should you consider mounting it on the opposite side of the board before mounting it, setting it up so that the tripod bolt would tighten it into the wood from the opposite side instead of eventually pulling it out?

It's so easy for a faster in the end grain of a board to loosen or even pull out over time. Have you considered using pocket hole method of making those joints? They are much stronger and when sent through the end grain at an angle hardly ever loosen even without adhesives.
@haloskycrash
@haloskycrash 4 года назад
When you installed the t-nut at the end you put the wrong end facing the tripod. You want the small side facing the tripod mount. When you tighten down on the tripod the teeth on the t-nut will lock into the wood.

dry wall screws are not meant for weather application. Use outdoor decking screws or brass or stainless screws.

Thank you, Richard, for sharing your design with all of us. I truly appreciate the work that went into this video. One little side note about the T-nut; the center hole should be drilled completely through the support bracket and the T-nut should then be installed on the backside of your support piece. When you attach the tripod mounting block it will actually pull the pointy bits even tighter into the wood. The way in which you have it shown will eventually loosen up and probably fall out. Just thought I'd mention it :). Thanks, again!

Thank you for this video. I am currently making a pochade box out of a COHIBA box. YOUR modifications helped me because I was able to use the friction arm and drill out, and discard the unnecessary pieces, and use it in the way you have done in the video. So thanks for your mods.

This is one of the best demonstrations for a project that I've seen. The fact that you supplied options for tools and materials that we might not be able to deal with is above and beyond expectations and much appreciated. The quality of your video, examples and presentation are top notch. Thank you.

Great video. You really go through all the steps and make it easy to understand. One question -- can you use torsion hinges? Amazon sells torsion hinges that can be tightened or loosened depending on how much torque you need. Or would the top half of the clam shell design be too wobbly without a brace of some kind? Thanks.

Why did you strip down the pressure hinge? Is it because you're mounting to a tripod and can get whatever angle you need that way? If you want to use this on a table top as well, you won't have the ability to adjust the angle of your painting surface.
