Full modern rig and aluminium on this hull???!!! Stop drinking or using somthing else.
@matsopp
@matsopp 11 дней назад
The oselvar boat type (faering, sixaering or larger hulls) has an unbroken line that goes more than 1000 years back. Before iron nails used as clinkers for the hull planks, the planks were sewed together by wood fibers. A little bit more than hundred years ago, galvanized iron nails was introduced, and more recently copper nails since they last longer than iron in seawater. The hull was originally impregnated with wood tar, but in the last hundred years oil and varnish has been more common. Similarly, the boat was first rowed, that at some point a square sail was on a centrally mounted mast was introduced. Again, the mast shifted forward, and a jib and mainsail emerged (the sprit rig). The sail fabrics has also changed from wool to cotton to plastic (darcon, mylar or kevlar). All these changes show the evolution of the oselvar as new materials and inventions appeared, but without compromising the properties of the hull as it moves through the water. It has made the oselvar more effective as a sailboat. The oselvar is now the only traditional boat that is an own regatta class in the Norwegian sailing federation. This helps preserve one of the uses of this unique and rare boat type, and the knowledge of how to sail it. The modern alumina rig and sails enhance the sailing properties, making it more attractive to people involved in other regatta sailing. Thus, it is a gate to a regatta tradition that goes back to 1871, and much further back when considering the build and use of this boat.
@tadasdovii8262
@tadasdovii8262 11 дней назад
@@matsopp i understand evolution, but why not make it plastic then if use your logic? Alominium riging have nothing to do with word - traditional. Maybe after 300-500 years totaly outclassed aliuminium mast will be called "classic", but it stil have nothing to do with 1871
@matsopp
@matsopp 11 дней назад
@@tadasdovii8262 Maybe it will be carbon fiber mast in the future, but if you make the hull in fiberglass, you change the building tradition of the boat. Alumina mast don't do that. The materials and rig is currently defined in the class description of the oselvar as a regatta boat. I do not think that plywood or plastic will be accepted in the hull, because that breaks with the building tradition. With plastic or plywood, it will be a completely different boat, not only for the eyes, but in any other aspect, with very different properties in the sea and waves. Except for oil, varnish and the metal in the nails, the building tradition hasn't changed. Your reaction to the modern sail rig is only related to your expectations of how this traditional boat should look like. Remember, originally in the tradition, these boats shouldn't have a sail rig at all.

Very good result! I've seen videos starting with barrels of the same size but only yielding less than 2 liters.
@matsopp
@matsopp Месяц назад
Thank you 🙂 The result is very dependent on the quality of the pine wood, i.e. the content of resin in the wood. Pine roots may be rich in resin, but in the old days the pine tree could be cut in a way that it would produce resin-rich wood also in stem and branches. The pine uses resin to protect damaged parts after for example broken branches during storms.
@MrObi1canobi
@MrObi1canobi 3 месяца назад
For it to be commercially sold, do you add any other thing to it? Also, do you think I can use this same process for palm kernel shell and get a good result. Finally, what is the wood moisture content required and what temperature do you start getting the wood tar?
@matsopp
@matsopp 3 месяца назад
We did not add anything to the tar we extracted. It was not sold, either. We used it for our own wooden boats in the local coastal culture association. We did not measure wood moisture or temperature, but it is recommended to use well dried wood. I do not know if it can be used with palm kernel shell. I read on the net that biodiesel is extracted from palm kernel. The pine wood we used was rich in a solid state resin, while palm kernel might have a more oily content? The more liquefied content, the higher chance for producing hydrocarbons in gas form when heated? I would be careful.....

Hvadimir is now touring southwards on the Norwegian coast. He seems to manage very well so far. Some weeks ago he seemed to be entangled in a rope. However, when rescue people started to haul the rope, it turned out he just had the end of it in his mouth, playing with it. His contact with people may become a problem if he swims further south to more populated areas, as he is not afraid of humans and boats.

My Dad and I restored a 1958 Knarr (varnished mahogany topsides # 42) in the 1970's. Loved it! Sadly, a tree fell on it in the boatyard and it was taken out and sunk in Lake Ontario. I still have some pulleys and cleats and the production plate. And wonderful memories.

I, unfortunately do not know Norwegian that well. But I definitely understood what this video was demonstrating. I see a very interesting method that I will try in the future. My only question is the type of wood used. Is it Norway spruce (Picea abies), or is it Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestrus) ?
@matsopp
@matsopp Год назад
This video is also in an English version (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-beQj4JSGP48.html). The wood used was Pinus sylvestris which is the most common pine in Norway. The most resin-rich parts of the tree, also called "tyri" in Norwegian, are the roots. Also the stem might contain resin, which is concentrated in the heartwood when the pine gets old. Further, damage to the tree might cause the resin to flow and enrich the wood around the damaged parts. It is essential that the wood is carefully selected, both smell and appearance are criteria for selecting "tyri".

Every country on this planet should return to sailing ships and legally require all ships now that have a design that would allow us to install masts, and ships built in the future to be sail propulsion solely and only use other forms of power in the strict occasion of doldrums or extremely severe weather. Only exceptions being military ships and ocean liners, all other ships can return to masts and sails.
