Thank you for all your work Dr. Freeman, i've watched your American Revolution series more than a couple times(and am hoping you can convince yale to upload your early US history course as well!) and just happened upon your work here, its such a nice feeling when someone whose academic work you already respect uses that to bring clarity to the really big BIG issues right now.
I doubt the supreme court would have needed to take this action if it weren’t for the weaponized Biden Justice department trying to remove a presidential candidate with creative prosecutions. New York State is a disgrace in this respect.
With the rise of Christian nationalism have you ever done or thought of doing an episode on religion in the founding of America and the reason for the first amendment?
Hamilton would love this court. It’s not enough that he stuck us with the idea that debt, for lack of a better word, is good (a central bank) but he would love this as if it were the wife of a friend.
The Bill Buckner of Supreme Court decisions. An easy grounder just plain blown. How are we not to be depressed when we see six members of the court, with very much premeditation, do such damage to this wonderful experiment?
We can't overturn a SCOTUS decision, but can't we work to elect a democratic majority in the house and senate to enact legislation to remedy their radical decisions? And to impeach those justices whose behavior are improper?
My first time listening to History Matters! It took a while to finally find this video as neither link on Instagram worked for me. You have so many videos on RU-vid, that's great!, but for the Newbie, it was hard to find. Someone on Instagram mentioned that it was in History Matters so that gave me the direction to finally find it. I am in the midst of listening to it now and I am really enjoying it. I have subscribed and will listen to more of your videos, including those with Joyce Vance. You two are great and at times quite hilarious! Keep up the great work.
One thing I keep thinking of is how Biden did in the debates leading up to Election 2020. He didn't do that well. He's just not great in impromptu responses to topics and competitors responses. And YET, his record as President has been really good. I don't give any weight to popularity polls, or polls in general.
Every Friday I start watching for NCHE to post the video - thank you so much! I wonder if TFGs joking about Refute, Refootal, Refuhtal the other day was a "tell" about the Gish strategy?
This podcast was an enormous service to engaged citizens. You and Heather are my “go to’s” for staying sane and somewhat useful as an advocate for democracy. Thank you!!!
IMHO we're here because of W. Bush's dismantling of the US educational system (and the rise of the Tea Party, which seems to me has devolved into MAGA). I think we, as a nation, are poorly educated in general and also specifically about Democracy (and how our government works).
Thank you for a wonderful method of dealing with these turbulent times. I have a feeling that the word framing will be coming up alot in my conversations.
Denial? it was an unarmed, unplanned tour of the capital. Wrong, but not close to an insurrection. That, if it occurs will be accompanied by armed, trained paramilitary types. Right? Common sense.
This definitely not end with Donald Trump. It has taken decades to build the infrastructure we find place, and the Project 2025 document shows it wasn't thought up over night. In my view, we are at war with MAGA Republicans in alignment with foreign powers. PLEASE prove me wrong!😢
The current Supreme Court scares the stare decisis out of me. Justice Alito’s poor reasoning goes beyond bias. He should not be on any bench, not even a workbench.
I wanted to be able to address my students' concern about free and fair elections, so I have volunteered to be a poll worker. Polling places, in South Jersey at least, are run by checklist. In training, I learned that workers from both parties literally read a checklist out loud and then do the thing the checklist says to prepare, run, and take down the polling place. You are there all day. You and the workers from the other party are responsible. If you stray from the procedure, the representatives from the Board of Elections made it very clear that by the end of the night you will be explaining yourself to a judge. There is accountability and oversight at every moment. I was impressed by how...insane it seemed that someone might have an opportunity to diddle with an election.
I would be really shocked if there's any white person in this country who isn't descended from at least one "Pilgrim." I'm watching this because genealogy and Elizabethan England thru Civil War American history is my obsession. I've studied thousands of hours of content. I've also had my DNA tested, and verified over 1,500 people in my family tree. William Bradford is my 10th great grandfather by way of his granddaughter Alice Ripley being my 7th great grandma married to my 7th great grandfather Samuel Edgerton. Myles Standish is also my 10th great grandfather way of him having a son Alexander, who's son Ebenezer had a daughter Hannah, who's daughter Zerviah had a son Abiel, who's daughter Zerviah had a son Franklin, who's daughter Flora had a daughter Eva who had a daughter Flora who had my mom. Also, John Pease is another 10th great grandfather who was in Boston by 1626. He settled on Martha's Vineyard. There are several more than that but I'm not writing a book here. I'm more interested though in my obscure ancestors, like my maiden name Egerton/ Edgerton, or Allen, or, Mullens, or Baker, or White. I think the Pilgrim narrative is just a smoke screen to cover up a whole other history that someone wants us to forget.
liberals believe they can predict the future - and that they own the future - but what if they don't? What if these trials historically go down as left wing authoritarians waging legal warfare against political opponents because they can't defeat them with better ideas? Suppose the lawfare works - Trump gets thrown in prison and executed, the left still have the problem that the far right have better ideas and win all the debates. It doesn't change a thing - other than further anger half the country.
How did men get this power? By risking their lives. Something women are unwilling to do, as the constant calls for women's safety demonstrate Look at Afghanistan over the last few years. The men of Afghanistan waged a war to kick out the foreign influences and obtain political power. Many of the men died. What about the women? Seen many pictures of Afghani women fighting with AK47s to obtain the vote or other political power? No, me neither! But you may say women are not allowed to carry weapons or fight in wars! Is that all it takes? Could the previous government have simply told the Taliban they are not allowed to carry weapons or fight in wars, and that it would have stopped them? No, the women who want the vote in that country, simple expect it to be given to them. not that they will have to earn it by fighting and perhaps dying!
In regard to your just mentioning that we're here where a person running for office is showing approval at the idea of violence for their benefit, I also recall when the Dixie Chicks said at a concert in Europe that they were embarrassed that Bush Jr was from Texas. Remember how all those people came unglued, and making threats against the Chicks and were burning their CDs and flipping out about that? And I remember Bush saying at some event with a smug grin something to the effect that they were paying the price for criticizing him. Republicans have been unpleasant and retaliatory for a LONG time now.
Given the recent trend of this supreme Court cherry picking details without full context to reach conclusions they want, I would not be surprised if the blatantly bad faith argument wasn't made to provide a convenient excuse for a foregone conclusion. Just an opinion
Great stuff week in and week out. I'm always so genuinely pleased to share each week's installment on my FB page so as to take up air and space in service to democracy. Keep on 'keepin on, team! #DeplorablesWasTooKind.
I think it was a very good talk and an honest account of our shared histories past and current waves. I think there is a lot of passion as well as a lot of pain and loss. A very intelligent appeal to humanity one for humility, decency and honesty and another for evolution and overcoming ignorance, belligerence, and arrogance. It would certainly be a blessing to be able to heal and to make justice real and to take responsibility to end in every way still active today the ravaging of nations and the earth's resources and the horrific largess of billions of dollars to meet the problems faced by the society of a continuous violence that is making life impossible for all living beings, a place that is not fit for human being. Let us be inspired and become creative to restore the dream. People of the rainbow as prophesied by the Hopi people and restore this garden to the great green earth as she was given to all of us to love, care, and protect into eternity. Yes let us honor the Indigenous people and their cultures, legacy, wisdom, creativity, and beauty blessed us all to survive and endure through many trials and despairs. We are indebited to all the many hundreds of Indigenous sovereign nations of Turtle Island that we have had these times to discover ourselves, to seek to understand our relationships, and to face the bitter and heartbreaking truths. May we not repeat the horrors of the past but be transformed out of them to bring honor to humanity and to God by becoming the true human beings were created to be. May we pursue how to love again, to be loving human beings and follow in the way of truth and light as the great teachers made a path for us to walk the beauty way. Amen.
Thanks for explaining the brief, and thanks for signing it. I can not BELIEVE that I think that the SCOTUS just might agree to at least some parts of immunity.
