Commenting from 1:34 in: I am finding the background music very distracting, as it is too loud compared to the voice! Please have mercy on those of us with ADHD and other focus challenges! Commenting from the finish: eventually it got somewhat better, or my focus was able to zoom in. Very interesting! I had never heard the mariner story, or those ending tips for endeavors that benefit from an eclipse!

Hi there, just wanted to say you’ve been a massive help in focusing my craft and my abilities. Love your book and podcast so much (much love to Laine as well)! I dipped my toe into this side of spirituality several times throughout my life and, honestly, if I had found you and Laine the first time around, I wouldn’t have had to come back to it later over feeling confined with things like Wicca (as that’s all I got my hands on at the time). You’re both amazing teachers and I’m truly grateful for your help.

I'm glad you recommended Owen Davies' Grimoires because that was the first book that popped into my head when you mentioned that his History of Witchcraft was very European centered.

I associate apples with good health. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." I also associate apples with enjoying the simple pleasures in life. I keep a small bowl of dried apple slices by my front door, on my kitchen window sill, and on my altar. I've also hung dried slices in my window with red hemp cord. I incorporate dried slices into my art, like into door wreaths. Apples are a great ally. 🍎

Gemma Gary notes that “It may perhaps be the Church, in its keenness to eradicate adherence to Pagan divinity by grafting and projecting it onto the diabolical, that has, unwittingly, most thoroughly preserved the potency, liberation and illumination of the “Old One’ and handed him back to the Witches as the ‘Devil’.”

Priests and Christian Theologians label any deity other than their One God as "The Devil", so for Christians Pan, Herne, Cernunnos etc, are mixed together as "The Devil".

The Devil of folklore in Spain is very similar to that of other areas of Europe, it's consistent. Too long to explain but He is for instance a figure appearing in some old Carnivals (very ancient rituals in the guise of folkloric dances or theatrical displays, the "Carnaval de Bielsa" is a good example) where horned beasts end up being appeased by a pretty virginal woman who symbolises spring, for instance. We have tales of people helped by the Devil or tricked by him, or he being tricked by a human. There's these two aspects: the formidable entity you can't outsmart, ancient, wise, powerful, fearsome, linked to Nature, storms, death,fertility, and the trickster figure that you can make fun of, so to say. I know that the Devil is very real, an entity that is part of this World. Many people can't handle that He might be real , it shatters their world, so to say, the scientific base on what our modern civilization is based. People love safety, rules, and stability. They fear the unknown, they panic if they don't know what to expect and the logic behind things is not quite "rational".

I've just started looking at the traditions that the people I grew up with did in the light of folk magic rather then just quirks and it's fascinating. We had people who would buy your warts and people who would sing to trees etc etc..and all of this just went right over my head as a child. Now I'm blown away by how much work these people were putting into keeping our community safe and happy. I wish I had paid more attention and had some of these old folks to talk to because it's just wild to me that this whole culture was right there in my town being done all around me and I just didn't know it as that. All I knew was this is how we do things but no reason for why.

I can't wait to see the regional videos. I love folklore (and myth and legend) from a historical and storytelling perspective. When you type "North American folklore' into Amazon or Goodreads or what have you, thousands of books show up and there's no way to know easily which ones are worthwhile. I find videos like yours invaluable to help me find ones that have real depth and insight and not just the same basics you can find anywhere.

Cory, great video! I'm a huge fan of your podcast and writing. Native Ozarker here and I wanted to share seldom talked about history. The French, specifically Quebecois, had a huge influence on the Ozark region. St. Genevieve, Fort De Chartes and Kaskaskia were trading hubs between Canada, the Appalachians and New Orleans. Also, I love that you brought up the Pawpa tree. There is a specific dialect of French that was spoken in the southern Missouri Ozarks called Papaw French. It sounds a bit Cajun when heard. Sadly the language is dying. It was still the primary language spoken in certain isolated Ozark areas even into the 1960s. I have roots in these communities and have done some research and found that several Canadian folk stories survived into these communities. They've evolved to include or be replaced with regional animals, etc. There is a musician and Folklorist, Dennis Stoughmatt who speaks fluent Pawpaw French and is an encyclopedia of French folklore of the region. He has videos on RU-vid. Thanks so much for this video! You are spot on with your Ozark history and folk knowledge. Definitely lots of Scots Irish. I have plenty of those ancestors too. There are many around here descended from migrated Appalachians. Thank you for all the work you do! Great video!

Hi Cory, Do you think the iron spikes in the ground would be offensive to the fair folk that may inhabit that land? I love the idea of "nailing down your property" but want to be respectful to other spiritual entities that may have been there before me. Thoughts?
@newworldwitchery7149
@newworldwitchery7149 Год назад
So I haven't ever seen that in existing North American lore, although there are some persistent stories about iron being used to deflect "elfshot" in the Appalachians and Ozarks, I believe. And the practice of nailing down the property has been used for about 150 years at this point and seems to work for those who do it. Maybe making an offering (something like milk or honey) to any fair folk before doing the nailing down and explaining your purpose would help placate them?

Cunningham also wrote a lot of books on Wicca. And the one strict rule Wicca has is "just so long as it harms none, do what you will" Similar to the Christian golden rule of do unto others as you would have them do to you. So curses to harm wouldn't be in Cunningham's books.
