My name is Paul Jackson, I am a Canadian Tres player, and this is my 'one stop shop' channel for the Tres Cubano; conversions, players and instruction all in one place.
I've been captivated by this instrument since my first trip to Cuba in the late 90's and I wanted to make a channel that's not just focused on Treseros, but that features them by name.
Currently I have three Tres Cubanos: two Baby Taylors (a Mahogany and a Sitka spruce) and a Taylor GS Mini (Sitka spruce). I've purchased many Tres Cubanos in Cuba over the years and my converted Taylors are more playable and sound better than any of them.
I'm 44 years old, I work as a Coffee Roaster in Nova Scotia, Canada and live with my wife, two sons and a yellow lab named Tilly.
In early 2019 I launched TresKits.com where I make and sell Tres Cubano conversion kits for Baby Taylor guitars.
Hi there, I’m finding it hard to know the value of this particular tres as it is discontinued. Do you have an idea of the current price range for the Art et Lutherie tres? Thanks for your help.
He aprendido tus instructiones tocando el tres cubano. Saludos desde California. Area de la Bahia SF.
Hi. Many thanks for your videos. I recently just bought a tres cubano with the traditional strings. so: octave, unison, octave the only difference between mine and yours is is that mine has the two thick strings on the edge of the board (on opposite ends/extremes) the problem is with the last string in the very bottom (see 1:19 for reference) sounds strange. Even after tuning it, it sounds strange I am thinking of converting it to modern rather than traditional. my question is, since I don't live in a country where tres cubano strings are available. is it possible for me to use the strings made for regular acoustic guitars as thin strings in the tres cubano? would this work?
I would add that Mario Hernandez died the same year this video was done. His real surname was Clemente but he took Mario Hernandez as his stage name. Watch the series of four videos that Mario did with Miguel Amadeo on RU-vid. They are gems. I knew some of the guys playing guiro in the videos. Marios rendition of the danza "Improntu" is historic. Also, his solo in "Jammin" is for posterity. There are more schooled and polished players today but Don Mario Hernandez and Arsenio were the root as was Isaac Oviedo. The tres is like the Knight or horse of the chessboard. It has to be played agressively and without reservation, "a lo guapo."
The tres is Cuban and I don't think there is such a thing as a Puerto Rican tres. We Boricuas adopted it and added three strings. The Cubans did have a 9 stringed tres that they called the "tres macho" because the lowest string is a tercera or G string that gave the melodic lines a huskier sound. I have a 6 stringed tres that was given to me that was played at Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba. I also have a 9 stringed tres made for me by Carlos Seda from Rincon, Puerto Rico. They are both played the same way but the tres macho has a more sonorous and fuller sound given that it has more strings But the melodic lines sound real cool on a six stringed tres. I love them both. But we have to get one thing straight;:El tres es Cubano y viene de Cuba.
