I’m super exited to share this recording!
Twenty years ago this was the first album that made me take notice of the Cuban Tres. It was the playing of the amazing Canadian Tresero Jay Danley on this record that was my main inspiration to play this incredible instrument in the first place.
I love Jay’s playing on this record. He’s using a Traditional setup on his Tres (two octave courses) which gives him that jangly old-school tone, however his approach to soloing is very modern. I refer to Jay as the Eric Johnson of the Tres, I think it’s an accurate description.
Klave y Kongo was conceived and assembled by lead vocalist and bongocero Blair Martín, who also wrote five of the nine songs on the record. On the album he also plays Guiro, Maracas, & Tumbadora.

Founded at the end of 1995 from a series of informal Afro-Cuban percussion workshops, Klave y Kongo has brought the sound of Son-Montuno to the streets of Toronto. Every Friday night for the past three years, the group has hosted the weekly Cuban Dance Party at the Cervejaria Downtown (842 College St.) where they have consistently attracted some of Toronto's finest latin dancers, and have established the city's first regular live latin dance event. It Is here that the group has developed in an atmosphere usually reserved for larger (and louder) Saisa or Merengue groups. As a result, Klave y Kongo’s sound, while based solidly in the Cuban ‘Guajiro’ tradition of guitars, percusslon and voices, is invested with a more aggressive and high-energy tumbao, reflecting their own urban swing y sabor and revitalizing the Son for a modern latin dance audience.
As well, Klave y Kongo has become increasingly popular with a more culturally diverse festival audience, reflecting the recent wave of interest In World Music. They have even attracted a certain amount of international attention through festival and club appearances with such Internationally recognized artists as NG La Banda and Eliades Ochoa y Cuarteto Patria. Their regular Friday night shows have been frequented by members of the world famous son group Sierra Maestra as well as the legendary Compay Segundo, who, delighted by Klave y Kongo’s rendition of Ahora me da Pena, joined the group onstage.
