You know what? I’m sitting here thinking…… Today we call these films “negative portrayal’s” but I never felt so good about being black coming out of the theater. This is the era when your phone would ring… “Turn to channel 2 there’s somebody black on TV.” Just to see black people with furs and money was aspirational and had a temporarily strong but positive effect! That still lasts in me to this day.
What a movie! Everyone and everything was done very artistically and professionally done. I saw this film when I was still in college and their right it did have a long lasting influence in that minorities in bad situations too can be successful, but I don’t expect non-minorities to understand unless you’re Sig Shore😉. Curtis is a musical artist and a genius at his craft, more like him you can count on one finger✨

I was WESTPAC and got all The Superfly clothes made in Okinowa , Hong Kong and The Philippines after leaving Vietnam , came back home in 74 and thought I was clean as the board of health.
I was working in the Oakland jail as an electrician in 2000. The jail was run by old OG guards .A gaurd brother was playing super fly and I was mouthing the words quietly. The guard Said “ Man! What you know bout Curtis Mayfield?” I said “ I’ve known Curtis back when he was yo momma , yo daddy dat nigga in the alley” He laughed and said “ you alright “.
In a word, simply a Masterpiece! The clothes, the car, the music, the story, the star, his best friend, his girl, man this movie will Never be duplicated! Rest in peace those who are no longer with us, Peace Out

the term Exploitation , came from white media!! this Movie was not the case! it had a positive message , brother got caught up needing the mighty dollar and in his mind at the time was he way out the hood...he said i can make a million i want out! the game..their is a scene where he runs across some kids who hooked school, they kids idolized the Superfly thing, nice clothes and fancy cars..he told them kids to get back in school and get your education , not to follow his lead/.. where's the negative exploitation of BALCKS??? Shaft same thing!! Sahft was a bad!!! watch your mouth..and he gave it to the man ..when you give it to the man , thats exploitation in their minds! basically That TERM at the time was white man BULL S..T
I was in forth grade in school when this movie came out. All my friends and I were white kids. A bunch of us seen it. About three of us would wear are leisure suites and our white boots. Our bicycles were our cadillacs
