THIS MAN IS INDEED ONE OF THE MOST INTELLEGENT MEN IVE COME ACROSS IN AN INTERVEIW!!! HES WELL SPOKEN, AND HAS A BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!! R.I.H RON O'NEAL!!!!
He was definitely the real deal. I can see why he was chosen to play this part, I can see the fire and sincerity in his eyes and he was believable. I remember the first time I saw it, it was during the time you could stay in the theater and they didn't empty the theater - I stayed and watched it four more times. LOVED this man.
+David Mazzini Yes he was. The funny thing about this movie is that while it was successful, it ended up hurting his career. Casting directors saw him as a hood/hustler. Sad really.
The epitome of class and grace,I'm no fruit but he was a Handsome dude, could of played the lead in any major motion picture in the late 70's or early 80's.Ron's with the Angels now ,so God bless Ron and all his fans,Super fly!!
I never knew he was a Shakespearean actor. He took this roll to another level and there's never been another one like him. Out of all the movies that I've seen where there were hustlers or drug dealers none of them had the style, the smoothness, or the intelligence that priest had. It was a movie that really made you think about life and what it was really about. My mom brought me to see this movie when I was 8 years old and although 10 years later I had my own drug issues I never got so deep because of this movie. I smoked and snorted but I would never shoot up because I couldn't forget that scene with Freddy having withdrawal symptoms in jail. I love the fashion in the swag of the characters it was a real reflection of how New York really was back then.
What I love about Blaxplotation movies is that there not at all like today's movies: no special effects, no sensationalism, all they had to rely on was great stories of the many layers of Black America. And also great actors.
I agree, movies and television now portray blacks as ghetto or bafoonish. This trend began in the mid-1990's with Martin Lawrence and the Klumps films.I strongly believe that type of negative portrayal of blacks in the media made a huge impression on young people today. This is one of the reasons why black youth don't feel the need to vote or be politically aware. And (racists) whites are taking advantage of it. The main reason why police have waged war on black males is because they know these laws protect them. Any parent in their 30's, 40's, or 50's really needs to get their heads off Facebook, Instagram, Real Basketball Wives of Atlanta (WTF) and get involved in their kids futures while they still have one.

Russy Jody also, have you noticed that we blacks font have that "brown sugar" heroines like Pamela Grier, we don't have a modern day Pamela Grier, the only one that comes close is biracial sistah Halle Berry, but where are the beautiful brown sugar, I miss the likes of Pamela Grier on the silver screen. Ok peace.
Superfly was probably one of the best films of the 70s, period. Ron O’ Neal was the nucleus of the film. This film in the wrong hands would’ve sucked. Ron brought it to another level. You believed he was “Priest”. His walk, talk, swag. He made him VERY real. Unfortunately, cuz Hollywood is so stupid they couldn’t see Ron past Superfly. He was much more than that. It was the biggest thing that happened to him and he never topped this success again. It’s ok cuz this role is iconic.
Ron O'neal WORTE his character. That's why it seems so real. He along with Philip Fenty wrote the this movie. Watch this old video of Ron 'Oneal explaing how he and Phil Fenty wrote "SuperFly" : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p5e7mlZRgQU.html
I downloaded part 2 Super Fly TNT down to my tablet. And I absolutely love that as well, I know a lot of people said that wasn't as good as the original, but I still enjoyed the movie anyway! I wish they could release that on DVD or something. And this fact that he wrote and directed it himself, I thought was pretty cool!
Thank so much to the late great Ron O'Neal for paving the way! Although I was born 2 years after this film, it was indeed a staple in my family and I am so thankful they inadvertently introduced me to your work (cause I used to sneak and watch it when the adults got together). You were such an intelligent, versatile, high skilled, articulate conscious brotha and although your corporeal body is no longer with us, your spirit will always live on through the great work that you did and passed on! Now that's a real legacy and immortality for ya. Peace and Blessing be unto you....
You are so right! And he aged like a fine wine, I had the honor meeting him about two years before he passed away, and he was absolutely gorgeous! Very sweet kind talented man!
Jazzy Moni It’s interesting that you say that because as I was watching this interview I was asking myself what other roles could he have played with his look/swag? A detective? A doctor? A lawyer? I mean, he actually LOOKS like Superfly in real life lol
If you don't bring me my money TONIGHT LOL That was always my favorite part Good interview and one of my favorite movies. Unfortunately this role served as both a gift and a curse to his movie career.
Reuben Mine too.....also when he went in the bar/ lounge and told the server " Get me a nice COLD beer".Makes me reach for a cold one every time i l hear it
Ron O Neal was my favorite Actor of all time when I was a little girl growing up. My baby daddy looks just like him. Priest is so Fine. I've seen every movie Ron has made. I'm a 50 years strong Fan and Admirer of the Beautiful "Pretty Man" Mr. Ron O Neal RIP....Ase'
The truth is that Ron O"Neal was a one hit wonder, and this movie was his only claim to fame. He was a very good actor, but I guess his mixed appearance hindered him from getting starring roles in black movies. (It was said that he lost the role of Shaft to Richard Roundtree because they felt he was too light.) But Super Fly was a classic movie that can still hold up today. If you can get past the fashion of clothes .lol RIP R.O.
I've seen Ryan O'Neal in other movies and tv shows after Superfly... Red Dawn (1984) he played as a South American general that invaded America along with Russians, as well as TV shows in the 90's, He was also in Theater productions on Broadway before Superfly, Do your research buddy.....
@@LeopoldMaysonet I never said that the Super Fly was the only role on his acting resume, What I said is that it's the only one that was an actual hit. Yes, he appeared in films prior to that and appeared in other movies and TV shows thereafter. But he''l always be best remembered for Super Fly.
Youngblood Priest is one of the coldest characters a black man ever played. I was a year old when the movie came out, and I know I’ve watched it over a 100 times. The soundtrack that Curtis Mayfield put to the movie was a masterpiece [just listening to it is like eyes for the blind]. Rest In Peace ☮️ Ron O’Neal/Curtis Mayfield/Fat Freddy/Shatter/Sig Shore/Carl Lee. [posted February 25, 2021]
When I was 11 or 12 in 1975, my family belonged to the Black Muslims of Los Angeles as followers of Elijah Muhammad and later Louis Farrakhan... That year there was a big function I believe at the L.A. Coliseum. This man was one of the many stars that were there and I got a very close look at him as he passed me. He seemed like a very cool guy back then...
He reminds me of my father, uncles and cousins. They all dressed like that and drove big expensive cars too. All legit though. They had high paying jobs
The only movie where the black man doesn't take shit from police and literally whoops their ass. And did it in style. One if my favorite movies of all time.
I heard that actress Cicely Tyson had campaigned hard against Mr. O’Neil and the movie Superfly , because she felt it glorified the drug hustle and characterized black people. He said he felt she personally destroyed his career in movies too. She even went as far as using the NAACP to try to get what she wanted accomplished.
I was to young back then to see the movie, but when I finally saw it, I didn't know he was trying to get out of the hustling life. I thought he was a gangsta. It made me respect the movie even more.
O'Neal interview is a eye opener as he explains the theme of the movie is beware of the Trapp game .in 2018 we have Trapp music .It makes one wonder same infrastructure in movie is working today ,sad circle
Despite good intentions of the makers of the film, the way that it glorified being a dug dealer motivated so many men to go into the trade, and thus created a massive increase in drug related crime, and even more misery in the ghetto.
The film ear not the catalyst for the increase in the drug game, within the Black community. It was merely a commentary of what was already happening within the Black community. Keep in mind, that the drugs and all of the auxiliary filth that goes along with it,did not start in the ghetto ... it came from outside the ghetto. From other countries, and from other more affluent areas.
Most ppl missed the intention.... " Priest" was wise and saw that even though he could profit ( financially) especially when the " Man" could " protect" him.He didn't want to be controlled by the " Man" or the life...he wanted to use it to get out and be free from the shackles of the drug game which was gonna either put him in jail or dead.Ppl who was living that life then and even after should've followed Priest's blueprint. He wasn't glorifying the life.He was saying this aint the way to live." I wanna get out before I ice someone or someone ice's me"
I sure was sad when I googled his name to find out more about him to find he died in 2004. Some you can call handsome, but he was FINE. What I liked best about him in Superfly, was his walk, he walked like he was about his business. I'm thankful for the films he left us. ✌❤🙏Rest in PARADISE Ron O'Neal🌷🌲🎵💃
You know that HollyWood weren't about to let a pretty Black Man get that far in the Game. Superfly was a Huge Hit I was in 1 or2nd grade when this film came out everybody was talking about it. I couldn't see the film Movie because of my age but...my classmates saw the movie and they said that it was Good
I also was in the Second Grade when this movie was out. Never saw it myself during that time but my cousin and I used to bump the soundtrack at my aunt's place,(his mom). But it wasn't until I finally saw on VHS 20 years after its release. Saw it now 31 times. Its a terrific blaxploitation masterpiece with a bumping soundtrack of all time.
I think Superfly is the most gorgeous man I saw him in New York in 1972 and I was 15 years old and I have a VHS tape of Superfly Ron O'Neal he's gorgeous I am so happy to see this video anything with Ron O'Neal I don't want to see nothing else big fan big Love in my mind always mine. 😘 For real for real 💯🌹🍎🍸
The game he plays he plays for keeps hustling towns and ghetto streets trying to get over,he's gonna do you over, taking all that he can take gambling with the eyes of faith trying to get over trying to get over trying to get over trying to get over. Whooo! Super Fly,(Ha! Ha!)
Great actor, beautiful soul, intelligent, and a beautiful dude.growing up.we all wanted to look like and act lol Super Fly. Without the dope of course .
Super fly and Hell up in Harlem Shaft Black ceasear great movies ps not all us white boys ignorant it is still good vs. Evil and sometimes good kicks ass
Ron O'Neal's movie roles in SUPERFLY contributed to the moral downfall of young and older black and other poor nonblack Americans. He died in 2004 of pancreatic cancer, but he left no positive LEGACY for the black community. Illegal activities, drug use, prostitution, and pimping in poor communities reached an all time high AFTER the release of his SUPERFLY movies in the early 70s. The MAN financed the movies but Mr. O'Neal participated to make his money, 💰 and celebrity. (Forgetting about the negative impact on his community to make his short-lived 💰.) RIP, sir. If you want to change a community for the better, you focus on the POSITIVE-- like many nonblack movies do. YOUR success gave you money and what you aimed for, sir. YOU gave the black community NOTHING but images of illegal money, drugs, pimping and prostitution. GO AWAY. GO FAR AWAY, SUPERFLY movie---WE HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH RACIAL PROFILING, DRUGS, ETC. SINCE YOU HAD YOUR 15 MINUTES IN THE LIMELIGHT in the early 1970s. GO AWAY!
