My absolute passion is sewing...I love everything about it from picking out the fabrics to making the first cut and sewing the last stitch on a project. I love teaching others to sew as well. I've always had a desire to put my skills online so my students have a reference to go back to if they forget my instruction in class. So little by little I will post videos of skills I've discovered make sewing a bit easier, and will hopefully be helpful in your journey. Visit my online shop for sewing notions for your sewing basket and patterns too!
Is there any way to still get this block of the month quilt kit? I happened across a used pattern and would love to follow along with your tutorial guide. I know I'm 5 yrs too late... story of my life :-)😊
I am scared to death of making blocks because everyone says make them big enough you can square them to size. So do you add two inches to all your blocks?
I’m glad I found this video. I just yesterday made 16 hourglass blocks that I squared up to 5 1/2 inches using this exact method. Yet, when I sewed the block together some of my points did not match up. I cut everything exact and sewed all seam allowances exactly 1/4 inch. What am I doing wrong? I noticed when you cut your hourglass block you don’t cut exactly or evenly the same amount off each side. Is this why my points don’t always line up and if so, what can I do about it so that all my points line up all the time? I’ve run into this problem before and can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Thank you.
Also an easier way to find the center mark of your squares is to draw from one point to another creating an x and in the center of that x is your center point
I'm a new scriber and I'm new to crafting. I have a question I brought a tote full of thread that are put in Ziploc bags according to color. most of them don't have any labels can you give me some ideals on how to tackle this mess.
Thank you so much! You used an hourglass block to square up with a large ruler--- exactly what I needed. Your video was the best I've seen. It was very easy to understand your explanation, along with your demo.
Good information and demonstration. Also if you want a quick way to find the center of the block before you put the square ruler on it, just fold in half twice and lightly pinch the fabric to make a mark at center. Then lay out on the cutting mat to square up - your center will be easy to spot.
Thank you so much for saving my sanity. LOL. I was having trouble getting my star points on my Ohio Star to line up. I think with a little practice they will finally match. Thanks again.
I realize this was made 6 years ago, but thank you so much! This was a great, easy to follow tutorial on how to square up blocks! My hourglass came out great!
Danielle H 😂yes, I can’t believe I did this video so long ago...I’m so glad it’s still helpful and relevant even though it’s long and kind of slow. Thank you for your kind comment! I appreciate the feedback.
OMG! Good work! Spent all afternoon watching square up videos but only yours showed exactly WHERE to put the ruler and WHERE the lines are! Thank you! Couldnt figure how to do log cabin blocks as they dont have a diagonal line and only have one seamline completely across the block. By golly i think Ive got it! Kudos!😘
My Cabin By the Lake is on its way top the quilter. Thank you for all your hard work on this project. And I know that you worked hard! Enjoyed the process. Chris
Thanks again for making such a fun project possible, Janae! I thoroughly enjoyed myself and am thrilled to have such a beautiful piece to show for all our hard work. :) Please consider teaching other BOM classes and I'll be there! :)
Fantastic description of how to square up a smaller block using a bigger ruler. As others have pointed out your video is to the point and easy to understand. Gotta go....I have to rush out and get some masking tape!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm just starting out quilting and couldn't quite visualize squaring up a block to 10" when I don't have a 10" square ruler. Now I feel confident in how to accomplish this.
Oh, forgot to mention -a helpful reminder-remember to reduce your stitch length after making your paper HSTs! It makes ripping those mistakes so much easier. Yes, I did reverse one of my star points!
